Ok if this is in the wrong forum then please move it.

Now I have a Nvidia 8800 GT BFGOC card and I do get acceptable FPS in ROF except when there are a lot of planes in the sky, now im thinking of purchasing a HD 5850 will I see a difference any one running one of these cards.

My CPU is a Intel Duel core E8400 over clocked to 3.5 GHZ
XP SP3 O/S
RAM- OCZ Reaper HPC Edition PC2 8500 C5 4GB.

System very stable infact bullet proof and very happy with it except for ROF as stated above.

Thanks.

That would be a noticeable improvement, for sure. You're upgrading over 2.5 generations there.

Whether or not it's "worth" it depends on your budget and how much you play ROF, I guess :-/ That's a pretty subjective question.

5850 is a helluva card and a wicked good (I put that in for Jay :P ) upgrade from the 8800GT. It will definitely throw the load back onto your CPU, but even there, you have room to upgrade to a quad if you so desire in another couple months (Q9550/9650 family).

The value would have to be justified by yourself, but if you have the means, I'd say go for it.

I switched an 8800GTS 512 for a Sapphire HD5850 Toxic, It's a massive improvement and the card has no trouble maxing RoF (or any other game for that matter) out.

Haha, thanks TB. Yea, the card is "wicked pissah!"

Falck, I'm not sure I'd go quite that far. I mean, I have a 5870, and I run ROF literally maxed out (High across the board, 4x FSAA, 8x Aniso, V-Sync). It gives me 60fps a lot of the time, but when flying into or around large clouds, it drops to 30 or so. It's the alpha blending that clouds require which hurt performance so badly.

I bought the Sapphire Vapor X 5850 and I love it - almost completely silent.

It's good to have 1Gb so you can max the settings if you want to , but ,as Jay mentioned, the game will still draw you back to sub-30 fps at times.

With a dual core - worst case scenario is that you may not escape the performance issues with a lot of planes in the air, even with this great card.

The patch is mooted to improve performance so it might help the Duals.

This is the card I am thinking of upgrading to. Currently I have a 8800 GT myself and it only fills up about 55% of my 52 inch screen resolution wise before performance starts to drop.

Leave something left of Piggy, because if you continue to feed him, you will be able to Eyefinity before you know it ;)
I.E. save up for two more monitors.

I also switched from 8800GT to HIS 5850 in November and I like it very, very much. It is very powerful and I have no issues with RoF.

I only upgraded to a 5770 from a 8880GT that was good enough for me and was half the price of a 5850 ;)

I did the same exact thing (same cards)… but now I've got the itch to move up to an HD 5850 (if I can only figure out how to justify the purchase to my wife. Ouch!) :)

OK - I think this would fit better in the subforum about video cards, so I'll move it there.
