Clarified Naming Guidelines for Submitted "For Fun" Skins

Having read a number of posts in these forums and had several exchanges with Lefty, we've identified a couple of significant problems or concerns about the skin approval process that we're going to address with these clarified guidelines.

First, please be clear - ALL OF THE OFFICIAL REQUIREMENTS ESTABLISHED BY NEOQB IN LEFTY'S POSTS REMAIN IN EFFECT AND MUST BE COMPLIED WITH. These clarified guidelines do not change those requirements - they just make it easier to comply with those requirements, and to eliminate a potential problem that could result from the way the approved skins will be implemented.

The two problems/concerns being addressed by these clarified guidelines are:

(1) it's proving to be overly difficult for submitters of "For Fun" skins to get translations for the required localizations in the .txt file; and

(2) because of the way the approved skins will be implemented, if we continue with the current guidelines we will wind up with chaos on the in-game list of available skins in the Hangar screen, with fictional skins and historical skins hopelessly jumbled up on the lists, and with no ability of players to make changes to restore order to those lists.

For the non-historical skins, these concerns will be resolved by:

(1) furnishing a fully-localized, "pre-translated" sample template that can be used for the required .txt file, to eliminate the need for skin submitters to ask and wait for translations into all the required languages; and

(2) implementing a tiny change in the content of the "<displayed paint scheme name>" string in the .txt file.

Also note - these clarifications do not apply, and no changes are being proposed, to the way the required files themselves (the .dds, .jpg and .txt files) are named - those files still need to be named just as outlined in Lefty's original posts. These clarified guidelines apply only to the content of the required .txt file (i.e., some of the text strings inside the .txt file).

The new localized, "pre-translated" sample .txt file template is set forth in the post immediately below.

Skin submitters are not required to use this pre-translated template - if you want to have a different displayed skin name and/or short description than that shown in the sample template, and are willing to go to the hassle of getting them translated into the various languages for the necessary localizations, then you are free to do so (subject to complying with the character length and type limitations for those strings set forth in Lefty's instructions posts).

HOWEVER, in order to maintain some appropriate order in the list of skins displayed in the Hangar screens, whatever skin name you put in the first (shorter) of the two strings (the "<displayed paint scheme name>" string), THE SKIN NAME MUST BEGIN WITH A SMALL "z"AND A [space] in all localization sections, as shown in the sample template below !

(NOTE - This "z " is NOT to be translated if you're not using the sample template and are getting your own translations, as it's not really part of the skin name - it's just a sorting device to make sure that the "For Fun" skins are all grouped together on the in-game Hangar lists)

PRE-TRANSLATED SAMPLE TEMPLATE FOR SUBMITTED "FOR FUN" SKINS

Given the new requirements recently announced by 777 (with the release of Volume 5/Patch 1.017) for the style/format of the .txt files required with the submissions for skins for the Community Skin Packs, I have updated the localized, "pre-translated" sample .txt file template that can (and should) be used to simplify both the submitters' and the processor's tasks in getting these personal/fictional skins submitted.

The new format is set forth below - the parts in
BLUE are to be filled in by the skin submitter with the information noted - the parts in BLACK need to appear in the file just as shown below:

//ENG:

"graphics\Skins\Correct folder name\File name, starting with correct prefix.dds" "xxxxxxxx" "z Aircraft of Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron" "Fictional skin for use by Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron"

//FRA:

"graphics\Skins\Correct folder name\File name, starting with correct prefix.dds" "xxxxxxxx" "z Avion de Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron" "Peinture fictive utilisée par Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron"

//GER:

"graphics\Skins\Correct folder name\File name, starting with correct prefix.dds" "xxxxxxxx" "z Flugzeug von Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron" "Fiktiver Skin benutzt von Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron"

//RUS:

"graphics\Skins\Correct folder name\File name, starting with correct prefix.dds" "xxxxxxxx" "z С-т пилота Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron" "Вымышленный скин. Автор: Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron"

//SPA:

"graphics\Skins\Correct folder name\File name, starting with correct prefix.dds" "xxxxxxxx" "z Avion de Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron" "esquema de colores usado por Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron"

//
//Skin author name: Name
//
//Skin author forum nickname: nickname
//
//Skin author contact e-mail: e-mail address
//
//Skin historical background: Fictional skin for use by Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron
//

NOTE (this is NOT part of the .txt file contents/template) - please be sure to use arial font and to save the .txt file down with the "Encoding" set to as "UTF-8", not as "ANSI", so that the Russian characters will display properly.

Do we have to add this pre-translated thing in the zipped folder for download on file hoster, or just add it in the poll post?

It would be best if you would update your uploaded .zip file with your new version of the .txt file.

I'd offer to do it myself after your poll closes if you just post it in the poll thread, but with the flood of "fun" skins I think (hope) this will unleash I'm afraid I'd get swamped with trying to do that and might well forget or miss one and screw up the chance of getting it approved in a timely fashion.

- What am i suppose to put in the <line break> :oops:

- I will type all this with word pad, and put it in the same zip folder, beside the dds file and the 300x100 picture, right?

1. <line break> is just a carriage return - i.e., just hit the "enter" key and get to the next line.

2. yes - the .txt file goes in the .zip file along with the .dds file and the 300x100 preview picture .jpg file.

if i understand well (posting only english line of the .txt file, to save space)

my description:

ENG:
"graphics\Skins\FokkerDr1\FDr1_conga.dds" "White Tail, Captain Conga" "White tail Fokker Dr.I with Karl Conga's personal markings, spring 1918"

must be converted into:

ENG:
"graphics\Skins\<FokkerDr1\FDr1_conga.dds" "z Aircraft of Karl Conga" "Fictional skin for use by Karl Conga"

?

Is this compulsory (must update my txt file) or it's just a help in order to avoid people to struggle for translation in other languages?

Can i leave my old description (my translations should be ok) or am i expected to update the new txt? Can i only add the "z" to the old description?

Ty for your answer Panthercules :)

No, you do NOT need to change your skin names/descriptions to match the simplified template ones - that's not mandatory. If you want to deal with getting the translations for different ones, you are free to do so.

In either event, however, you should add the "z " to the beginning of the skin name you use. So, yes, you can just add the "z " to the beginning (but it's to be added to the beginning of the skin name string, not the description string).
If you still have any questions, please let me know.

Folks - we ran into some issues with the Russian translation of the skin name wording in the new simplified template being so long that some folks didn't have enough room for their fictional pilot or squadron names. Thanks to Kapeh, we now have a shorter version of the Russian wording, and the simplified, "pre-translated" .txt file template in the second post above has been updated accordingly.

If you've already used the longer version and your string wound up 35 characters or shorter, you're OK and do not need to change it. However, if your string ran more than 35 characters when using the original, longer Russian version, please replace it with this new shorter version so you can get your skin name string down within the 35-character limit.

Sorry for the confusion - if you have any questions, please let me know.

Hey Panther, no more "z" before the pilot name? :shock:

"С-т пилота <Name of Fictional Pilot or Squadron>"

How come?

Check again - it's still there - you must have missed it :lol: [seriously - I must have screwed up when I pasted the new Russian wording into the edited post and wiped out the "z " by mistake. I've put it back in there now - thanks for pointing that out.]

NOTE - the second post above has been updated with the new form of "pre-translated" template for the .txt file required for "Fun" personal/fictional skins, to reflect the new requirements announced by 777 along with the release of Volume 5/Patch 1.017.

Works for me - I've updated the template above. Not gonna worry about the 1500 or so skins that have been done (or any of the ones that have already been submitted) with the old version, since the French folks don't seem to have been bothered by this before, but this probably would be better going forward.

Thanks,

Panther
