This new Video card is for sale in New Zealand at PBtech for $450 NZD / $300 USD.

Attached File  1660 SUPER video card.jpg   134.01KB   0 downloads

Do I purchase?  ( I am pretty darn picky about big ticket items... yes this is big for my budget )

At the moment I have a really good Radeon HD 7850 2gig DDR5, which with RoF on low low settings

can give some respectable frame rates, 150 fps + etc.

( how "good" the frames are is another matter )

It's been a really great card, however the RAM size is small and gpu clock speed is under 1ghz....

Do I want ray tracing ? NOPE.

Do I want 2K/4K/8K/16K ? NOPE.

Do I want VR ? NOPE.

Do I want Vsync ? No idea.

Do I want 1920 x 1080 at max FPS and max settings ? YES.

If/when I upgrade to this card my next upgrade will be 1MS, 144hz 1920x1080 monitor.

with all this new gear I expect to be future proof for the next 10 years.

( depending on how developers push their minimum specifications ...)

I do not want a giant monitor, VR or RGB lights or insane details in game with stupid bugs with

clouds etc. A wholesome reasonable size small picture that is fast and cheerful is all I need.

What do you think?

Is the 1660 SUPER the way to go? ( Swapping teams in the process too...)

I use a standard 1660 with vsync set at my very old screens' refresh rate of 60. This limits my fps to 60. Works well. High fps rates may be an over-rated obsession. Imo. I reckon go for it lad. Have you seen the quack yet?

Quack?

No, but No1 girl friend came over and shared her dinner with me.

( Herby/spicy crumbed chicken breast with leaks, it's smashing. )

No2 Girlfriend is far too far away for such entertainment. Sigh....

and I have a very old screen too! 60hz  but my old 21" CRT at 800x600 went up to 200hz !!! but weighed 20kg....

( all that lead glass to stop the X-Rays, man. ) .

I feel better! ( Python joke... )

I am ill.

I am not in need a quack. I was aware of the meaning of the word, I was, erm, slightly stood aback by your suggestion.

Now if you had said "do you have enough Brandy on hand?" I would have automatically replied "no". Since quack does not equal Brandy I was slightly surprised. Ambushed you could say. In a good way of course. : - )  S!

Can you still get 1060's in NZ?

Yes you can get them second hand but.... they are about $300 ... versus $450 new (1660 Super ) ...

So ...

Stop the press!

If everyone upgrades to RTX 3070 then... there will ... be...loads of ... cheap ...video cards hitting the market....soon....

Wallet! Stand down! We wait!

Chaps.

I just talked to the sales representative from the shop I will purchase from and ...

They said the card has a 36 month warranty.

$450NZD for roughly 3x the grunt that I have right now, and a good warranty ... seems like a good deal.

I am seriously not interested in buying a used card, bit coin miners and dolts who OC cards wildly.

My needs are simple, my aversion to screen artifacts.... I'm buying new!

https://www.pbtech.c...a-6GB-GDDR6-Gra

The shop is spacious, the sales people are busy and they are in for the long haul.

I know they will still be here in 36 months from now.

Oh my hecking dog this is keeping me up at night. I never buy new. Ever. The pain...

PS. I will frame the HD 7850 and hang it on the wall. It has been such a great card. : - )

So. You finally did it! See, it wasn't that hard. Although you may have to peg back on the brandy a bit. But now you'll actually be able to see BSR in your sights.

The 1660 is a good card. It's done me no wrong. Dunno what the fps thing is but I'm sure you'll be very happy Pknla.

Been testing... as you do .. does it do the ton? Does it over steer? Understeer? Tank slappers?

Well I got a good method down pat.

Set my specs in "settings".

Start game.

Take a screen shot with FPS .

Paste shot in Paint.

Open up settings, and hover over paint.

Screen shot that and paste back into pain.

Save.

So you get the in game screen shot WITH the settings specs.

See here:

Attached File  006 - 242 fps - low low low.jpg   279.59KB   0 downloads

242 FPS sitting on the deck, It only goes up from here.

This is ZOOMED in mind you. Zoom OUT and knock off 100 fps.

What did I find?

Shadows, trees and multi gpu are the real asy things to tackle.

Shadows off. trees near and Multi GPU ON .

Multi Gpu ON gave +31 fps .

The really really kick arse thing is this card records VIDEO at 30FPS full frame in fraps and you can't tell it's doing it.

So yes... I guess I will need to make videos.... gosh.

This I think is the best all round settings :

Attached File  002 - 140 fps.jpg   339.95KB   0 downloads

I set al the Nvidia BS to global off. This may or may not be a good idea. I cannot say. It felt good.

I can see a custom video controller in the works.... watch this space....

Thursmedleya!

I have a venerable i5 4670k that tries to run at 4.8 GHZ ( after a bios update...) but really

should only run at 4.2 maximum. ( it BSOD.... for some reason...I know not why. )

It's driving me bonkers! I never asked it to go at 4.8 but every time it has a hissy fit it goes back to this! !!!!

I have yet to install the entire Nvidia software suit. I may try this out at some stage. At the moment I have installed the

driver only and the Nvidia control panel, which seems to do absolutely zero in RoF.  ( go figure....)

In a wee test last night I managed to to the GPU core clock up to 2Ghz. ( wow ) . I didn't turn anything up yet.... heck.

Maybe the Nvidia software is required to make the card super amazing? I guess ???

But however so far I am reasonably pleased. $$$$$$$$

If it was coupled with a  144hz  1 ms screen... it would be pretty nice. : - )

The weird bit is the MEMORY use:

Old card old setting, used about 10% memory. ( 2 gig )

New card old setting uses about ..... 10% memory ( 6 gig )

So somewhere in RoF something is quite wrong. Either they are talking about the % of the GAME

that is loaded into V RAM or... I am not sure. But there is a significant difference between 2 G and 6G !!!

and they both can't be 10% of memory....

I will forge ahead, so far so good.

PS.

Puh Kuh Nuh Luh  Ah.  П К Н Л А  , P k n l -  Ah. ( Stressed vowel Ah ) once you get used to pronouncing

Russian consonants and vowels you will never look at random letter sequences again! YES ! You can pronounce that! Try this ZDRA ! Zuh Duh  Ruh Ah.  Say is slowly then seed it up. : - ) Roll the Rrrrr.

That would deffo work in Aussie! :icon_e_salute:

Palnk; 4.8Ghz and the 1660 actually gives you a bit of a hotrod machine when it comes to RoF or BoX  at 1080p. :icon_e_biggrin:   Big framerates would obviously seem important but have you considered turning up the eye candy a bit more?

What of those lovely rain drops when you enter clouds or even try just a little anti-aliasing?

Think how nice those tracers could look as they come whistling over your shoulder and into the wing root whilst you're in the middle of a доска turn? :icon_e_biggrin:

So it runs up to 4.8Ghz of it's own er...volition, you say?  That sounds rather strange and not very healthy.  You might find this quite useful;

https://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

At the moment I'd ignore the Nvidia control panel completely. Better to come back to it once you've thoroughly investigated the many more options in RoF still to play with. These will make a real difference to your game right now.

I wouldn't worry about over-clocking your new card either right now. Much more is to be gained by sorting out what your cpu is doing first.

RoF and early incarnations of BoS like at least 3.6Ghz or above to really fly.  Going to 4Ghz would obviously bring more benefits too but both are a good combination with your new graphics card.

Turn on the speakers! ok. all the way to 11.

YES. The hecking new BIOS update set the CPU to 4.8 GHZ and it's now the default back up settting if the

mobo goes bonkers, AND it does not like this speed so it goes bonkers... see how this is a problem!!!! WAHGHGHG !!!!

HDR OFF.

Shadows OFF

Trees NEAR

AA OFF

Landscape 100%

Object draw distance thingy 100%

and everything else on 11 or at least 10.

Do you really think so? I was always running on the assumption that he, our Arthur, while when not blowing up tanks ( in real life ! ) was/is the historical buff what you might see laden with book in the lib rar ry. ( a what ?) I never picked him as a Russian denim clad Rodeo type. and how do you know he has a cold calculating look? what does that even look like? Some kind of ocular slide rule?

Our Arthur is probably more likely to be eyeing the comfy chair than trying to out stare a German ww1 biplane....

I am open to being wring about this mind you.

Tea?

It wasn't long ago that I copped flack for affecting an air of some fanciful WW1 type character. Well I thought if you can't imagine

yourself rubbing shoulders with those who might like to take WW1 role playing to tiddley bit too far then what an earth are you

doing 'anging out in the RoF forum? Were they lost ?

They took particular exception to bangin empty tin mugs on our home made ammo crate tables wanting demanding another round of brandy.

They found this ludicrous. I thought they were in the wrong bar... and needed guidance on how to find it.

Anyhooo..... The graphics card is settling in and will get a thrashing soon enough.

I did say it went up to 2GHz all by itself? It's only supposed to go up to 1.8 Ghz when on maximum power but for some reason it went gang busters... Had to yank on the handbrake. Squealed sideways in the mess and scorch marks up the walls... ballsy I say. Quite!

My PC problems are not that it's hard to speed up, no, it's hard to SLOW DOWN !

( get bigger fans! )

Alpnk, I'm under the impression that the three big hitters performance-wise for RoF  and BoS are anti-aliasing, shadows and v-sync. On your settings these are all off?  Haven't you spent a sum of monies on this spangly new card?  Shouldn't you be trying to extract a bit more value out of it?

Do you really think so? I was always running on the assumption that he, our Arthur, while when not blowing up tanks ( in real life ! ) was/is the historical buff what you might see laden with book in the lib rar ry. ( a what ?) I never picked him as a Russian denim clad Rodeo type. and how do you know he has a cold calculating look? what does that even look like? Some kind of ocular slide rule?

Our Arthur is probably more likely to be eyeing the comfy chair than trying to out stare a German ww1 biplane....

I am open to being wring about this mind you.

Comfy chair? Spot on :icon_e_biggrin:   It's been over thirty-five years since I last had the chance to fire at the remains of concrete filled Centurion tanks for HM Queenie and.....since I'm from that mysterious time before the internet.....I do like my books!

I think our Russian cowboy has the look of the FC Camel pilot about to join combat with the FC concrete-filled D7F. :icon_e_sad:

I knew it! It is you Smedders. Nice disguise.  ;) That concerned yet stiff upper lip look. Hoping a stray bullet or two doesn't shoot out your controls or shed your wings.

Hallo!

I am still coming to terms with switching sides. From Radeon to Nvidia. ... gasp.

AA - OFF

Shadows - OFF

V-sync - OFF

Tree visibility - EFF ALL.

This is one control which effects frame rate that you CAN control mid game. : - )

I would not be surprised if RoF is not using all of the capabilities of the card properly.

To do this the devs would have to look carefully at telemetry to compare game to card.

There is no way the game is optimised to wring the best out of the card. Zero chance.

In fact I bet the card could actually be used to do chores that the CPU was made to do back in 2008...

( welcome to GPU's leading the charge...)

Case in point being Pysic-x. or what ever it is called. Does RoF even ?

and this is where RoF really needs a hecking wind up. COME ON! and ZEPPELINS !!!

OH yes! How about this:

Player controlled Balloons. You use binoculars to do spotting. AND it can be shot down AND

it can lose it's mooring and you get blown ACROSS THE MAP !!!! imagine that! DEVS WAKE UP !!!

Why spend all that time and effort and $$$ on FC when RoF would be a better bet.

( yes the GB crew like FC etc etc but there are WAY more RoF players. Check the forum sign up page! )

The time before the 'tinternet:

80486 DX2 66Mhz !!!! 8M RAM and a 300Meg SCSI HDD. ( my dad who was a very early AutoCad user... )

14 K Baud dial up modem! Bzzzz Zang tzzzzz. CRASHSHSHSSSSZZZZZz... Bzang Bzang!  Connected !

oh my goodness. My learner has left! Now back to DIY !!!! To the garage!

S !

Knalpy.
