I reloaded ROF and found the 3 small instruments displayed and found them very useful. They just disappeared: how do I get them back? One post suggested Control + but that didn't work for me.

Were they linked to aiming assistance, which has also disappeared!

If these are the gauges you're talking about:

Then you need to go into the mission settings ("realism") screen and tick the simple gauges box, as noted below:

Once you have them ticked, you can then toggle them on and off with the CTRL+I combination (assuming you haven't changed it from default).

However, I would strongly recommend that you not get used to using these aids - it is so much more immersive and satisfying (IMHO) to get all this same info using the working instruments on the plane itself.

those icons are more useful then the inside cockpit ones. sure it would be nice not too, just to make the screen cleaner looking,,

but if its not immersive enough, then why turn on engine warming and autopilot

I don't think they are any more "useful", since the in-cockpit instruments convey exactly the same information - they're just easier, and they do clutter up the screen and reduce the immersion substantially for me.  I prefer seeing only what my imaginary WWI pilot would have seen, not what some modern pilot might see on their HUD.

As for engine warming and auto-pilot, those are my settings for test flights for new skins and mods and stuff (which is mostly what I do with RoF ATM - I haven't flown RoF missions for real since I saw what IL-2 GB looks like in VR).  I don't use those features when I fly actual missions - they just happened to be ticked when I took the screenshot to illustrate the above.
