Mr Von Oben,

Here's some images to show alpha channel in action!

The Albatros is painted in the white I use in game (RGB 165 165 165)

Ist pic is alpha in pure white, flat as a pancake (RGB 255 255 255)

Attached File  PURE WHITE.jpg   658.93KB   3 downloads

Second is pure black....goodbye plane! (RGB 0 0 0)

Attached File  PURE BLACK.jpg   498.71KB   3 downloads

And the third is alpha channel in RGB 165 165 165 same as the plane..shiny!

Attached File  WHITE AS PLANE.jpg   879.83KB   3 downloads

So the alpha channel is created from various shades of grey, and the lightness/darkness of those shades dictate the shine (or lack thereof) of the crate in the sky. The alpha channel is darker in the FC templates than in the ROF ones, so your ROF skin in FC will be more reflective when used in FC than it is in ROF, if you follow?

S!

Mr. GooseH,

Thank you; I understand.

Actually, now that I've been flying the skins a bit, I don't see the gloss as being that much different from the others; standard skins included.  I no longer see it as a significant factor in the game, so I thank you for your efforts; they have been successful and I don't see any need to change it further.

From my perspective, your Todt skin #6 works in ROF and Skin #8 works in FC1 (where the whole game's darker but all I had to do was up the gamma in settings).

You've been so considerate and accommodating, I can't help but feel like I'm imposing.  But if you had time, could you make me an Albatros DV.a, please?  That plane is now available in FC1 and I would really like to fly mine there.

It's very simple.   "Zweifacher Arger" (Double Trouble) is just a standard Jasta12 Default "Blacktail" skin with the duo-tone camo atop the wings instead of the lozenge pattern; and a two-pronged fork situated longitudinally on the fuselage and forward of the black empennage; ala my triplane.

Here are pics of the camo and fork.

Wouldn't even have to be that same pattern; just the duo-flage would be fine. If they have a stock two-tone pattern available, I'd be more than happy with that.

If you would consider it, sir.

Thanks for everything you've done for me and others.  Greatly enjoying the triplane.   :icon_e_salute:

VBR,

Todt Von Oben

PS: Also, here's a sideview of the plane I made with the old Picture It! graphics program; shows how the fork would look.

Treehouse?  Sounds like a romp! Enjoy!   :icon_e_salute:

Thinking it through, I've decided against the fork.  Here's a pic showing the image I'd like on the fuselage; I can email you the graphic.   :icon_e_smile:

And now the Fok DrI.  The Jasta 5 triplanes came from JGI who had transitioned to the Fok DVII.  So they were hand me downs and you can see this bird had a different scheme that belonged to a prior owner.  Excellent detail.

Oh they do and the screenies really don't do the actual results justice!  This is one of the reasons I love this era and the Luftstreitkrafte in particular.

Hiho together :icon_e_salute:

Gooseh is a true artist in my opinion!

But not only does he make very good historical skins, he is always ready to help when it comes to purely fictional skins.

I asked for help in the German forum and showed simple drafts with Paint...
L6xHhJnJ.jpg

And Gooseh made this...
Vu8KUUy1.jpg

I like these skins very well and I like to use them too, but I also wanted to use the standard version of the Albatros D.II, even if it is historically not correct. So Gooseh helped me again...
E7l2ZRnv.jpgF0Y7xtru.jpgaKOgrBuO.jpgvbwraKFd.jpg

RGJyn8Qt.jpg

Just wonderful skins and i am happy  :)

And my idea for these skins...
Is a small Jasta or Shusta in 5-man strength, which plays in the flight breaks always cards, mainly with a French sheet. And to make the Frenchman a long nose, they use for their new Albatros D.II the symbols of the French card game. But as for the squadron leader, who almost always had an unbeatable talent in card playing and was otherwise considered a "lucky kid" by his comrades, his wingmen agreed unanimously, it had to be a shamrock for him.

Many thanks to Gooseh! :icon_e_smile:

Hi GooseH!

The Dr.1 skin you made for "Triple Trouble" is perfect; thank you!

I haven't flown the new Alby skin you made but will some day.  Pics to follow.

QUESTION: Is there a skin available anywhere for Lt. Werner Voss' "Kite Face" Dr.1 that you know of?

Thanks again!

DISREGARD: I FOUND IT.  :-)

These are brilliant! I'm tempted to start attempting to skin myself... (no, not like that - put away the flensing knife!)

I've only just got the game, but can imagine the Muromets lending itself to something pretty wild.

Blimey! You have put great effort in here. I expect you've made many a grizzled pilot very happy.

I haven't started the campaign yet, let alone PWCG (which I gather is the way to go). I've been lumbering around in servers getting the hang of flying with a mouse (I have a joystick in store, but I'm building a house so much of my time and space is not my own).

I would be interested to hear what techniques you have found to be the best - I imagine you'll be off to Flying Circus eventually so such knowledge should not be lost. Is it a case of editing flattened nets of aeroplanes in your graphics editor of choice, then including an alpha map? If so I have a vague concept of the idea, but have not done any skinning before. My Photoshop (actually at the moment GIMP and Affinity Photo) is usually architectural and photographic...

Well, there's a few things you should know. ROF itself (as in the single player campaign mode) makes no provision for you to add individual skins to anyone but yourself. It's an awful long time since I played it, but the skies are pretty dry as far as flying circuses are concerned.  They did make a (very) few ace skins that will appear, if you're lucky to come across one, but my experience is that that's a pretty rare occurrence.

Multiplayer I have zero experience of, if that's what you mean by 'lumbering around in servers'?  ROF MP is a dead horse, as far as I've read, but some folks still flog it a bit, as far as I've read!

PWCG is Pat Wilson's Campaign Generator. It's a standalone product that runs through ROF and offers you the opportunity apply your own skins to your own plane as well as members of your unit. You can transfer in and out of/take leave from any of the squadrons that are in its repertoire from 1916 (mostly barren due to the lack of planes) right through to the end of the war. You can choose to be a gunner of a 2 seater (all I'd be doing with a mouse!) or a bomber pilot or a scout.

It's very customisable, and since I'm no expert on its intricacies, I'll say no more, but it's always been the choice for the discerning single player types.

It's not perfect, was never really finished, and sadly can do nothing to improve the woeful AI behaviours of NPC pilots. But it's as good as ROF gets if that's your bag.

I use Photoshop for skinning, with heavily modified templates originally provided by the developers. I know nothing of Gimp, but yes, it's a case of painting away on your layers, saving as a 'dds file with an extension with alpha and flying away. The skins I've made are currently being integrated into PWCG bit by bit so they can be utilised in game. It's a lot of text editing basically and a royal PITA. I don't know why I'm doing it other than the fact I enjoy it. I've no plans to go to FC anytime soon, the base templates provided are pretty substandard imho and I can't be arsed to do all the work I did in ROF again. Besides which, there's nowhere near enough plane types in FC, I doubt there will be any new ones so it's not for me until there's actually a game to buy, rather than just the promise there might be if I buy it.

So I'd head on over to the PWCG forum, get it installed and shout out if you need help, you almost certainly will!

Actually, there are hundreds of ace/pilot skins programmed into Career Mode (I know - I added several hundred of them during the expansion of the career mode skin usage project several years ago), but unfortunately we were never able to crack the code on why the percentage chance of seeing one was set so low and could not be increased, so they do indeed show up less often than I would have liked.  At least virtually all the units for which squadron-specific skins existed (and had been created for RoF) are programmed to use them during the appropriate historical time periods in career mode, so you do at least get to encounter those on a regular basis (especially later in the war, when more such squadron markings were being used), and those markings will change over time during the appropriate time frames (especially in Spring 1918, when German crosses were in transition and British squadron markings were being changed).

However, it is definitely true that Pat Wison was able to take a much more elegant approach to skin selection for members of your own squadron, and many more hundreds of pseudo-historical skins were created specifically for use with PWCG (by both players and AI units), so the skies in PWCG are much more "alive" than those in Career Mode in that regard.
