Salute :icon_e_salute:

For quite some time I've been dreaming up personal paint schemes for my planes, but so far lack the skill and daring to try making said skins myself. I don't want to intrude on anyone's precious time, but if someone would be willing to help me, and bear my detailed descriptions of how I'd like the skins to look, then I would be most grateful.

Fire away..you never know.  Bear in mind that your designs would likely never appear 'officially' in ROF ofc.

Thank you! Sorry it took me a while to respond, but I've been busy today. I don't mind at all that the skin won't be appearing officially, its just for personal enjoyment.

I'd like a skin for the Albatros D.III based on the Albatros DVa skin called "Jasta 4, unknown pilot" (same colour of lozenge, same black ribbon circling around the fuselage), but with various personal touches. I'm still considering small details such as having writing on the wings etc. But I would like to have prussian blue colour on the spinner and in the fuselage after about the mid-section through to tail section (what I mean by this is the blue colour extending from the tail all the way to the Iron Cross marking).  Also, on the blue spinner I'd like to have a white spiral, if possible.

By prussian blue shade, I mean something like these examples:

https://i.pinimg.com...d6f5e02ce0e.jpg

https://www.davincip...s/271-1F-2T.jpg

I hope this explanation's clear enough to get started :icon_e_salute: I'll probably add some smaller details later, but does this seem doable?

Edit 1: On the underside of the bottom wing and on its right side, I'd like to have a white letter "R." (dot included) , while on the top wing I'd love to have the text "Gib ihm Saures!", both in a suitable font, perhaps similar to how Udet's "Du doch nicht" is written? Or just some old style Germanic-looking font that can be conveniently found. I'll post a few links for reference, to show what I mean:

For the "R." on the bottom wing's underside:

http://allaircraftsi...nstUdetM4TB.jpg

For "Gib ihm Saures!" on the top wing:

https://www.google.f...zS2ofQnaXgAziM:

https://cdn.shopify....pg?v=1482548127

Edit 2: One more thing that would be cool (but optional if too bothersome) is adding to the fixed tail plane and elevators  black-yellow-white-yellow-black bars like in the the following Pfalz D.IIIa skin: "Aircraft of Zoring - Squadron"

That should be it. Thank you to whoever might give it a try.

OK, duly noted and very clear. I'll take that on, it's a bit busy for my tastes mind!

Don't have access to "Aircraft of Zoring - Squadron" as I don't have any fictional skins in my folder, I have had a look and the links are broken so I can't see what exactly you mean as regards the tail.

Here, this is what the  Zoring skin looks like:

https://imgur.com/GhyEAhP

https://i.imgur.com/IxItGO4.jpg

How difficult is it to skin the wood texture on the fuselage? Because I see a lot of variation in different Albatros skins, and rather like something such as this:

https://i.imgur.com/kkMq9Gw.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/VOFjsU2.jpg

As opposed to something like this:

https://i.imgur.com/ekli24N.jpg

Looks more artificial and less "woody"

Thank you, and I hope the design won't offend your taste too much :D

Wow... That looks so good, almost completely what I had in mind! The Blue colour is perfect, and I really like the nose spinner, the text, and the black fuselage ribbon, marvellous work  :icon_e_salute:  What is the official name of the font you used? It looks beautiful.

Only things I'd like to adjust are removing the lozenge entirely from the tail section (replacing with the blue paint) and slightly altering the tone of the wing lozenge (it looks a bit too light to my taste) and the wooden fuselage to something like this:

(really like the lozenge and fuselage in this) https://i.imgur.com/adnavKT.jpg

another example for the wing lozenge: https://imgur.com/VOFjsU2

Oh, and why not paint the wheel covers and the metallic engine cowling with the blue colour as well, completely forgot to request that last time.

Otherwise, this is perfect :)

Glad we're getting somewhere!  So...

The font is simply a hacked up version of 'Du doch nicht!' as per your jpg. It's not a set font you can download.

The lozenge and wood textures will have been created by the original author of the skins you show, I don't have access to those, I only have mine. That being said, the 'texture' of the wood is simply an overlay that can be increased in intensity, the colour below can be anything...like fluorescent pink for example. I can darken the lozenge somewhat, but this is the one I work with, after much research. You can have the 4 colour version also.

So here's a version with the edits you specified, take it for a spin and let me know, I'll tweak what I can within my limits.  How's that?

Just tested it, the skin is absolutely beautiful!

Having flown with the skin equipped, I think only a few modifications will be enough to complete it:

- Adding white spirals to the wheel covers

- Painting the propeller white or blue (or alternating in some way), so that it won't spoil the spiral effect in the spinner with a brown shade.

- Replacing the remaining piece of lozenge camo in the tail section with yellow (same tone of yellow as in the tail markings)

- Recoloring the top side of the bottom wing with blue, and, counting outwards from the fuselage, coloring wing segments 4-5 and 7-8 on both left and right planes with yellow, and segment 6 on both left and right planes with white, mirroring the tail markings but wider. So only the upwards side of the bottom wing, no changes to other parts of the wings.

I hope I'm not being too demanding? I really like the skin at this point already, but am a bit of a perfectionist.

You've created beautifully something that existed only in my mind, and for that I am very grateful.  :)  S!

Beat me to it, Was finally gonna try to use that wood template I made for the D.III :icon_cool:

If you're eager to try it out, I'm sure we can think of something ;) Like a skin or two for favourite wingmen in PWCG...

No need to apologize, and the plane looks amazing! One last thing I'd like to change is reducing the width of the yellow markings on the bottom wing from two bars to one on either side of the white bars, and adding black edges like in the tail. But that's such a small detail I'm not sure I want to bother you with it, only if you have the time and inclination.

Could you help me get the skin approved for mods off-mode? I'd love to fly with it in multiplayer. I've read the rules here https://riseofflight...-paint-schemes/but am not sure how to do all the steps.

Fantastic work, S!

OK, so that's the stripes as specified, hope it suits?

I know absolutely nothing about preparing a skin for official submission, I've never done it. I do know that it took 2(?) years for the last approved skinpack to come out, so the chances are slim that there will be another one and I don't think many people are skinning anymore, could be wrong.

Besides, I use a heavily edited 'Advanced Layers' section which may even break the rules, I'm not sure. I haven't read the whole page, it was a bit red and shouty!

Looks great, you got the wing stripes perfectly :)  Just to sate my curiosity, could you make one more version with the previous wood texture and maybe darkened lozenge (to get more vibrant colour shades like in those examples I posted)? Referring to this:

I can darken the lozenge somewhat, but this is the one I work with, after much research.

So......I'm wondering Todt, what's the problem with 7zip?  You should be able to just double click in the file, the folder should open and you can drag the .dds requited into your FokkerDR1 folder in your ROF directory.  Like this?

That is outstanding!  I do believe, had they done that in the field, it would have been aligned along the ledger line; as you've shown it here.  I think that's right.  THANK YOU!

Now I have to figure out how to download and unzip it as a 7Zip file; then how to upload it into the game.  My wife will help me with the first part and I suppose there are tutorials on how to apply skins.

Thank you!  This is really cool.  Looks like my 1:16th model.  Very happy with it.   :icon_e_salute:

Download this, it's the latest version as above and a .dds file (a skin file) no Zip, which you put in the FokkerDR1 folder in your ROF directory.

Mine is this: E:\777\Rise of Flight\data\graphics\Skins\FokkerDr1 That's where the .dds file goes.

Yours will be different but find your Rise of Flight directory, then \data\graphics\Skins\FokkerDr1 drop the file in there and you should be good to go!

My request:

Could you possibly create a set of skins from the 1917-1918 period for the following crates; Alb DIII., Alb DV., Fok DrI., Fok DVII., Pfalz DIII.

For these 2 Jastas:

- Jasta 5 = red nose and forward fuselage. green tail and stabilizer piped in red

- Jasta 2 = white nose and white tail piped in black, stabilizer split w/ white on one side and black on the other

With the attached "Berlin Bear" emblem on both sides of the fuselage?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Hi GooseH,

I've flown the skin and I really like it but if I could I'd ask for one more change.

My goal in making the cowl a flat medium gray was something less distinct to a tail gunner than the white J12 cowl.

The gray you have is about the right shade but so glossy it looks almost silver and actually shines much more than the white cowl.  Working against me like a signal mirror now.

Could I get you to either change the cowl color to a flat medium gray (like paint; not metal) OR (probably just as good) dull the gloss of the cowl way down until it looks flat; as if it's never seen a polishing cloth.  Dull drab and dirty is how I'd like it.

Thanks.

While we're doing final tweaks, could I also get you to move the trident vertically just a tad bit so it is centered on the arm of the Kreuz, please?

It would still start at the edge of the field as it does now; and it would still be longitudinally aligned with the ledger line; though now above and parallel to.  It would just be higher on the side of the fuselage so the shaft handle points back toward the center of the Kreuz.  (Right now it sits low on that arm, if you see what I mean.)

Artistically, I think it looks better because framing composition of pictures often has more base than top in the frame.

And raising it slightly would also do less to obscure the serial numbers.  I expect it would still touch but not as much and that's okay.

I have always envisioned the trident extending on a line that begins at the center of the Kreuz.  If we could slide it up some while maintaining longitudinal alignment; getting the handle shaft of the trident centered on the longitudinal center of the arm of the Kreuz, that'd be perfect from my standpoint.  That's how I have it on the model, too.

Don't like being a choosy beggar but, if you would please?  The cowl in flat medium gray and the trident slightly higher along the fuselage?  Thank you.

I think this image may have misled you; now that I look closely, the trident is slightly low here.  It should be just slightly higher; centered on the longitudinal centerline of the lateral arms of the Kreuz.  My bad.  Sorry.   The 1:16  model comes closest.

GooseH,

My morning exuberance gives way to a sharper view by afternoon.  Sorry.

I like flat the lack of sheen on the cowl but perhaps not the grunge on the rest of the airframe?  I wouldn't want her to look like her mechanics didn't love her.  :icon_e_wink:

And right now the top edge of the trident shaft is aligned with an imagined longitudinal centerline projecting horizontally from the center of the Kreuz.

If we could just bring it up about half the thickness of the trident shaft, so the shaft and point ride that imagined extended long centerline of the cross; that would be perfect.

Hope I'm not being too picky.  This is, after all,a gift horse; I'm very grateful and feel awkward looking it in the mouth.  But to get it like the model, the above would work.

VBR,

Todt
