This is a fresh install, no mods.  All of the forum posts I've found about a hotfix or patch have dead links.  Help?

I suggest that you do an update from the game's launcher.

Success!  Didn't think to look for that.  Thanks!

I'm sure this is in a FAQ or thread somewhere, but are there any free missions available to try?  Everywhere I go in the game, I would have to buy DLC to actually play.  Any way to try before I buy?

Glad that worked.

As for missions and DLC - you don't really need to buy anything in order to get a lot of enjoyment out of RoF (of course, there's a lot of cool stuff available to buy to have even more fun with, but it's not necessary).

There may be a few player-created missions that you could try for free (see this subforum for threads that might have them: https://riseofflight...making-servers/), but unfortunately the Mission Editor for RoF is rather complicated and that has probably suppressed the number of missions available.

However, with the free planes that come with the game, you can fly the "fly now" missions for those planes that come with the game, and you can create your own practice missions with the QMB (Quick Mission Builder - lets you create lots of different types of mission types in several places on the West Front map, changing various things like weather, time of day, type and number (and skill level) of enemies and friendly buddies, altitude, etc.).    You can also play several reasonably long careers in the game's career mode - some units and time periods won't be available for you in career with just the free planes, since they were only in service on the Front during certain portions of the war, but you can still fly career mode missions for any of the units and time periods for which those free planes were in use at the Front (you can use the "filter by plane type" feature of career mode to help select units and time periods available).

You can also use the great career mode alternative created by Pat Wilson (Pat Wilson Campaign Generator, or PWCG), which will create a series of missions for you that provide a really nice alternative to the game's career mode (and has an especially nice way of letting you use the custom skins available for these planes, for yourself and your AI squadron buddies as well as enemy aircraft you might encounter).  Of course, like the game's career mode PWCG is set up so that planes are only available for use by the appropriate units during the historically appropriate time periods, so you'll need to tell PWCG which planes you own and choose to start a campaign with a unit that flies one of those planes (PWCG tells you which type of planes are flown by the units you may choose to fly with).

So, lots of choices available to enjoy RoF and fly missions without having to buy anything in the way of DLC.  Of course, they hope that once you've tried the free planes you'll like it so much that you'll want to buy more to add to the fun (and if you're at all interested in WWI aviation/flight simming, I'm sure you'll wind up buying more - it's a good idea to take advantage of the great sales they run from time to time, like the 66% off sale they're running now - just be sure to pick one source for buying your DLC (either the RoF store or Steam, but not both) and stick with it).  I'd recommend using the RoF store - you get more flexibility to buy exactly what DLC/planes types you want (Steam has bundles/packages that may not have exactly what you want), and the devs get more of the money than they do if you use Steam.

Enjoy!

There's no telling how much damage this problem is inflicting, so I have just filed a report with screenshots of the error plus my explanation Google-translated into Russian.

If that doesn't work I don't know what will.

Good effort - worth a try at least.  That really is an awfully badly-worded error message considering what the real problem spawning it seems to be - a simple reminder/suggestion that there has been an update since the version they are running and that they might want to do an update from the game's launcher would be a marked improvement.

I'm having the same issue.  I though maybe updating the game would fix it, but when I click the update button on the launcher, it just closes the window, which I assume means the launcher crashed.  So I have no way to update the game, do I need to completely reinstall everything?

There have been some other threads about this issue lately - you may want to read some of them for more details.  One thing you could try, however, would be to run the updater file directly instead of from the launcher (IIRC, that worked for me when I was having a similar problem with the launcher just closing).  To do this, just run the following file (assuming you're not using the Steam version - I don't know where things are in a Steam installation):

Rise of Flight\bin_game\release\rof_updater.exe

Good luck!

The updater hasn't worked for me from day one.

I hit Update and the window disappears and then nothing.

You have to execute it directly:

Point Windows Explorer at:  777/Rise of Flight/bin_game/release

In that folder you will find an executable called rof_updater.exe

Double click that file and when it runs, click the Update button.

Thank you for this info, Arty. I've been trying to fix this inscrutable error for some time and trying unsuccessfully to run the updating service from the launcher. Running the updater exe filer did the trick!!!
