A very quiet night with not much action, save for a big US103 / J30 scrap at the end - it was worth the wait! We were tangling in between the cloud layer, and it made for some really cinematic moments.

We were also joined by Hobbs and Ponder tonight, completing the full 3rd Flight line-up!

See you all next week.

We were trying to fly smart..

We noticed!
That first skirmish with your 2 high Albs was like a chess match. We ended up deep in enemy territory and way East of the map :)

Finally did engage later almost by accident. One Alb managed to dive away but the other high one took an attack by Biddle while I fired at him from below with the Lewis.

As Larner mentioned, the last fight was quite classic and very cinematic.
2 DFWs and 3 Albs v 5 Spads attacking from above.

Salute to everyone who flew S!

Last night was as much a mind game as it was a brawl, with both sides using some interesting tactics to try and get one over on each other. In the end, the majority of the fighting was between J30 and US103, with some very cool furballs breaking out.

I had more lives than a black cat. Was bounced repeatedly (Cuban, Larner, Baer) with significant damage while flying high top cover for J30. Couldn't see the 103 except from afar. Only fired my guns once last night at an HP.

The soundtrack for this session was Variations on Theme - for Gothas and D7fs, performed by J30 and friends at 2000-3000m.

Sometimes 2 bombers and 3 escorts and at least once a single Gotha and 4 D7s! Attacking those spaced formations really stretched our  teamwork and each time it was slightly different. Fascinating and dangerous.

Of course as we got distracted by these the rest of the Central bombers wiped out most of the targets, but it was a fun session.

:icon_e_salute:  to all who came out.

You took the CO's special titanium D7 i assume   Had the sweetest run on your greentail but somehow you dived across the lines and the plane held together.

Last night ended up quite a lot of fun. It was Autumn 1916, which put a priority on getting Recons done but just to make things really challenging the Recon planes were FE2bs!

1st Flight doesn't mind the odd recon, and this one was very odd :D On his first run Parsons was hit by Archie, so i climbed and climbed...to 8000ft. The rest of the Squadron bravely battled with various fighters to keep us safe but over the target i couldn't get a camera icon. Definitely had Camera loaded but remembered i hadn't seen the icon on takeoff either. Felt pretty dumb.

Back to base and try again, but no matter what photo loadout i tried, no camera icon on the field. Parsons got it once but rest of time he also couldn't. So Nieuports it was.

A couple of low DFWs gave us trouble at first. Its hard to get a good attack position on them because they're just as fast as you are, but when we attacked smarter we managed to do alright. Highlight was a long flight in a N17 that involved chasing a DFW all the way back to it's base with Klug, then on the way back downing a DFW over the mud, and then fighting off an Alb.

Eventually Cuban got a recon done and we got a few Spad 150s. Night ended with a typical tough street fight against a J30 Roland, not made any easier by Klugermann mistaking a Spad for a Roland!

:icon_e_salute:   to everyone who came out.

Our stream is here. Timestamps as usual.

Vintage missions don't utilize the photo icon algorithm. You should have just had to fly between the point x amount of times as per message pop up.

Tried just flying along the points too. (See whole first hour) No msgs. Parsons same.
Cuban got a camera icon at spawn though, so I was potentially missing a trick. But no idea what it was.

Some Syndicate maps do and some don't.  There are only 2 I know of that do not and are only subtitle based and no camera icon, however even these give you a message that a recon plane is about to depart when spawning in and it mentions it in the mission briefing.

Basically, if you spawn in any recon plane and don't get a message or a camera icon, respawn and try it again.  I have seen it where you need to select a weapon loadout with bombs, then switch back to camera only and spawn back in.

It didn't require any special tricks of me the other night however, just hopped in and went (after making damn sure I had a camera icon ;)

Salute All :icon_e_salute:

With the release of the Flying Circus Arras map we'd hoped to be able to start running Thursday Nights there or alternate weekly with Cuban's for some pre-1918. We are keen to use FC more, however it seems it might take a little while to get suitable missions and reliable server situation sorted for the kind of mission-based flying that all the participants on Thursdays would find acceptable, and not just furballs over the mud.

So our plan for this week is to meet on Wargrounds as per usual, then move over to FC - Arras later in evening, perhaps around 10-1030pm Eastern or if there's a suitable mission break.

By next week we should have some kind of ongoing plan sorted out re servers and have regular evenings on FC

Hope that works for most, but feel free to let us know your thoughts.

See you up there!

Split session as expected. Started off with Lille - late on Wargrounds and found ourselves faced with a super high D7f. Being impossible to get our Spads up there we stayed at a good height and eventually had some good fights with a DVIII and D7f a couple of times.

We then headed off to FC and found JG1 up in strength on their server. We had a number of running battles with multiple CL2s and D7s before ending with a dive through the clouds to intercept their flight of 6 Dr1s!

The Arras map probably needs some more optimisation as most of us had some stutters despite good frame rates, but it was still awesome to see so many planes up and all the enhanced graphics. It really does make a difference.

The beauty of the landscape was only surpassed by the intensity of the combat. I was in that battle with the 3 Halb Cl.II and  6 (?) SPAD. Just awesome. I believe we took out 3 SPADs.  It had to last almost 5 minutes, maybe longer? Good coordination on the part of both teams. It proves that what would be a flame war on the forums about match ups means nothing when you get things mixed up in a fight.

The physiological effects are a bit over done in my estimation.  Black out for G effects- yes. For a bullet wound - no.

The scenery is awesome. It is nice to just fly around. The new farms add a lot. I love the explosions in NML.

I think the Alb overheat bug may be fixed. Ran it a full for a while, no message.

Was trying to shoot some parachutes and blame it on Talbot.

Spawn Quick mission on Kuban summer map at 100m, close to sea. Go to sea level, aim for wet map edge, engage level autopilot, hit 8x time acceleration. If you make it to the map edge without overheat, bug is gone :).

That fight was AWESOME. I believe there were 2 or 3 D.VII Fs mixed up in it as well! 3rd Flight showed up with 3 SPADs, but a roaming band of Brits showed up at the same time. I don't think 1st Flight made it to the fight before it was all over. From what I understand, the Brits didn't fare very well - I don't think any of them made it home. The Camel that rammed poor old Ponder out of the sky certainly didn't...

I quite like the physiology. As far as I can tell a single wound doesn't black you out - but two definitely does. And from the memoirs / historical books I've read there were cases where pilots would pass out after taking a knock and come back to their senses before they'd crashed.

Agreed, map looks great. Seeing the JG1 Dr.I formation on patrol over the mud gave me chills!

Will try that, thanks.

I'm only getting 75-90 fps now with Arras map, where previous FC maps were in the 100-130fps range.

Yeah, dogfights in FC Arras are fantastic, even at this early stage. I love the clouds. Such a different experience - both practical and beautiful.

Your CL2s were attacked by 103rds 3rd flight and other allies, my group had a running battle with a couple of your D7 escorts. I could describe their plane markings in great detail :)

Physiology I tend to agree that in practice the wounding blackouts feel overdone. If it is 2 bullets to cause a blackout that 'sounds' ok, but it happens very often, and it essentially kills you because you're then a sitting duck for 10-15s.

Anyway the good far outweighs the bad. Looking forward to a full on FC session on Thursday this week.

Salute All :icon_e_salute:

We feel the time is right to shift the focus of "Thursday Nights with JG1 and US103rd" to Flying Circus, at least for the next few weeks.

First of all FC is providing an excellent 1918 flying experience, but with the excitement generated by the Arras map it's also a great time to drive larger-scale FC use and support the map developers and server ops to create maps/missions suitable for Squadron operations.

Intention is to still use Rise Of Flight regularly, especially for the pre-1918 experience, but it'll likely be less frequent. RoF has some great maps and obviously a much broader planeset that is way too good to give up. So we hope to work out what sort of rotation/schedule works best for that in coming weeks as we get more familiar with FC and receive feedback from regular Thursday pilots.

Till then please do join us on Flying Circus. This week should be on JG1 server at the regular time.

We'll be streaming as usual https://www.youtube.com/user/PaulLMF

Gentlemen of the US103rd,
My PC doesn’t meet the minimum requirements to run IL2 Flying Circus

Sadly, at this time, I won’t be joining the US103rd on Thursdays for IL2 Flying Circus or on Mondays for IL2 Flying Circus Training Sessions

Hey Stumble,

Stream of the FC thursday night is up. Bit ragged and at times in the first map it felt more like an icons-on experience with Airfield camping and that sort of nonsense, but got better with the Arras Map and had a lot of high encounters.

Does anyone think there would be enough interest in including Wargrounds in the the Thurs rotation or setting another night aside for it in order to get some time with the older plane sets while the FC bugs get ironed out.
