What gives here ?

Boats seem to have a mind of their own when trying to guide one through a river system.

Stick the first Waypoint in front of one and as often as not the boat will do a 360 (on dry land) first ? (yes the boat is facing the waypoint !!)

Will often do a 360 en-route somewhere, sometimes permanantly - as if there wasn't another target in front of it (which there is).

Sometimes the Boat will turn around and head back before reaching a Waypoint - when there's no instruction anywhere to do so.

Bridges... getting under one seems to be hit or miss, mostly miss. And with only x16 speed advance in-mission, it wastes lots of time checking / re-doing / checking again...

This is in consideration of utilising the yellow directional Waypoint indicator.

Not sure if it's meant to indicate 'lead into' or 'route out of' the Waypoint, but I've tried both and there seems to be no difference. (I've assumed 'route out of'..)

Anyway, there seems little logic to all of this.

Not sure why a Boat on a River can't act like a Train on Rails. Would save on Waypoints for one thing !

I must be missing a trick here..

I believe only the "Gunboats" follow the river, all the rest, subs, cruisers, etc. need waypoints at every turn, bend, etc.

Thanks HB, it is Gunboats I'm using - and they do pretty much follow the river when left to their own devices. (waypoints = less is more)

The trouble starts when they have a decision to make i.e. a waypoint or alt route.

The motion of the boats doesn't help, they tend to fish-tail quite a lot.

Anyway I got what I wanted in the end, just took about 16 hours of my life to organise 3 boat routes  .

Mind you.. it is Lille's waterways !

S!

When you look at a waypoint in the mission editor it has a yellow circle and a line on one side. The line needs to point in the direction of the next waypoint. Same thing for trains.

Thanks Butz :) .

I must confess I used one of your Lille Maps as a starting point - just to get the landscape and buildings.

What a piece of programming by you btw - hat's off !

HB - you mean a server ?

Hopefully NFF, although there's probably way too much going on to run well... but we'll see.

It was intended as a straight dogfight, but it's looking more like half a mission's worth of boats / tanks / trains and vehicles.. .

Roughly.. the French and Brits have broken through the lines and the battle for Lille rages... street battles going on. So plenty of targets.

Most non-AF AI set to low so it's not too treacherous for pilots, AF mosty low / med.

We'll see when it's finished if it would be ok and of interest on a server. Being created as a single mission for now.

I just got rear fields and ai Bombers / Escorts to do, then I'm sending it to '86 to see what he thinks..

If there's a problem on NFF you'd be welcome to host it if you liked it... assuming that was the offer !

Right then back to it..

ZF.

(p.s. If I've assumed wrong then the one word answer is 'Lille' !)
