S! All,

We are getting things ready for the start of the Spring campaign. The Dry run will be at the usual time  on  6, May 2017 ( notice how I avoid screwing it all up by not putting in the wrong time). Hostilities start 13, May 2017 The Dry run will have extra planes and no death penalty. We will be flying in the region around Laon.  The Entente side has some nice hills and valleys. The area will be smaller than usual because we will be flying the very early planes. A practice map will be running on the JG1 server so people can see the area and practice missions. Kill the balloon at the 2 seater base to restart the server.

phase A

Entente   DH2 and FE2b

Central     E3     and Roland

phase B

Entente   N-17, a few N-11,  and RE8

Central    Halb D.II and Halb CL early

There was concern about the mission chains being too long, such as if you kill or prevent the spy or General mission, you block 3 points. Those two missions have been changed. You still bring the Spy or General back to friendly territory for 1 point and on the way they tell you to search a sector. When you search the sector a new target pops up. That is their second point. Since the planes doing these missions do not carry bombs, another plane with bombs is needed to kill the target.

The rescue mission gives 1 point when you get him home to a friendly airfield. After you land, he now tells you about a Reserve Unit target.

The front line Recon gives 1 point when you get the pictures home. After you land, it tells you the Trench Attack point target.

The HQ recon mission was left as a 3 point chain to create focus for action.

The Wreath Drop has been changed.  We were using the enemy 2 seater base as the place to drop the wreath.  Unfortunately the heavy AAA made this a 50/50 suicide run.

The idea to move the drop location was well received.  But where to move it to?  A hospital? Yes!  2 hospitals have been added to each side. Either hospital can be used for the wreath drop. There is only minor AAA by  the hospital. Hospitals are hard to find on the map as they will be a little red dot with the name hospital.

Actual hospital is a large building with a blue roof.   Always close to a village and very easy to spot.

Thanks for info, Butzzell!

The planes' set is really suprise. Don't you think that Roalnd will dominate all Entente planes in the first Phase? Maybe is it reasonable to add Re.8 to the Phase A too?

That's a sweet planeset (even if i'm alone to like it) . Rolands dominance can be countered by giving few of them (E.III can be used for spotting and many other missions redicing number of C.II airframes, having few Rolands stretched between all bombing objectives will make them wasted as fighters).

We have used this set before, well almost. We swapped the Airco DH2 for the S-16 and used the lower west side of the Tarnopol map. It worked very well. The Roland is a superior plane but it only caries 4 bombs.   :icon_e_smile:

I have meant Roland as an intercepter. With its guns and speed, Roland will annihilate DH2 und FE2b even with bombs.

Anyway, let's try it! :)

I really like the early planes, and have been waiting for the chance to play a FiF campaign using them again for a long time. Unfortuntely the tailpiece of my joystick (warthog) broke last night and now I must wait until a new one arrives (for anyone else having this problem, I suggest looking here https://www.shapeway...ebolestis&type=). This guy (debolestis) makes several pieces using 3D, and can help you to recover or upgrade your joystick.

To my surprise, this piece breaks more often than I would expect, even being made of (cheap) metal.

Anyway, as soon as I get my set working again, I plan to come back to FiF and increase the "target of opportunity" list. ;)
Have fun, guys.

Cheers

S! All

Dry run is set for Saturday 6, May, 2017 at 2 pm Eastern daylight saving time  USA,  1800 UTC.  Some planes will be unlimited as there is no death penalty for this session. Because of mission mechanics, most of the special 2 seaters will remain limited.  As you can see above, many of our missions have been slightly altered.

Please note that the FE2b will be allowed twin guns in the front. The Roland only gets 1 gun in rear turret. NO twin guns for Roland.

If you will be a commander or flying 2 seaters, please review the information about this session.

We will be paying respects to a fallen hero, Captain Albert Ball, DSO,VC. An aggressive pilot, he was an inspiration to friend and foe alike.

He was instrumental in taking the comity born SE5 and turning into the great fighting machine, the SE5a. His favorite tactic was to position himself below an enemy and fire upward. This is why the SE5a had the Foster mounted Lewis gun.

His death is still clouded in mystery. His crashed plane did not show battle damage and he himself had not been hit.  Basic Albert Ball info at WIKI

S! to Albert Ball, VC, DSI (2 bars), MC -- one of the top aces of the war.  RIP.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make tomorrow's session (prior commitment), but I expect to be posted to the front on or about May 13th ;)

Best Wishes and Best of Luck to all for tomorrow's sorties!

Regards,

Hope I'll be there later on. Great plane set, really love those early birds.

And Ball being a favourite ace of mine, it will be good to honour his memory.

S!

FiF 2017 Spring phase A session 1

We had 2 glitches.

The German Strategic secondary did not pop up. My error in mission builder. Has been fixed.

Second glitch was Entente factory 4 not killed when obviously many buildings down.

Central bombed German Factory 4.  Picture is down below. I tested factory with Roland and did 7 bombs. Killed factory and got message with 1 less building destroyed than in picture.

I talked with Phil. He had the targets written down. Factory 2  was the strategic recon and Factory 4 was the bomber target.

There should have been a killed message.  Factory kill message did come up in scores at end.

Posted bellow is investigation into individual buildings.

Factory looks dead.

In game photo of battle damage.

Bomber%202_zpsjow1iuxv.jpg

test picture. Notice only 4 buildings down.    Only 5 bombs

bomb3_zpsjm68cuqi.jpg

I started testing the individual buildings. 1 bomb at a time and oops something was strange.  You will see in picture bellow a building with a 3 bomb text and arrow.

What that means is, if you want to kill it you need to drop 3 bombs at the same time. Yes!!!  Bomb damage is not really cumulative.  I dropped 7 bombs on it 1 per pass before it finally went down.  I dropped 2 at once and it stayed up. With a fresh target it goes down when 3 bombs all hit at the same time.  It looks like each building has it's own damage limit and contributes a percentage to the overall total.  To kill a building you have to do a certain amount of damage in a specific amount of time or it does not register.  Very strange.  I can drop 5 bombs, kill 4 buildings and the target is dead. Or I can drop 7 bombs, 1 per pass and kill just one building and the target is still alive.

Bomber%204_zpswv6nfjne.jpg

If you want to kill factory quickly, kill buildings as seen in test picture.

S! All

Just a reminder, we switch sides for this next session. Blue team will fly Entente and Red team will fly Central.

Also, the was some question about altitudes for the Artillery spotting. Altitudes are in a vary narrow range.

"To start the objective, a designated "arty" two-seater must pass over a friendly gun position or gunship. The two-seater must be within 500m horizontal and between 750m and 1250m in altitude.

The arty two-seater then proceeds to the target as ordered, and passes within 1500m to observe the target. While he is spotting, the field guns will fire at the target for 2 minutes.

When told to make another pass, the arty two-seater must first report back to the field guns by flying over them within the initial parameters. The pattern is repeated until the target is dead."

Just a reminder that Saturday, 9, June, we start Phase B.   Blue team is Central and Red team is Entente.  We have new planes. Entente has N-11, N-17 and RE8. Central has Halb CL.II and Halb D.II.

S! All

We had some people on both teams that had their system lock up when they tried to spawn in.  Gen_Markof  noticed an out of buffer memory error.  This type of error can be caused by a world objects script error.

The question is,  how many people have their Knights of the Sea mods folder still active? I am not sure if that is the problem but it is a good place to start.  Many of the objects in that mods pack have been added to the stock game. Whether that creates a conflict or not, I am not sure.

Best to check JSGME and move the Knights of the Sea mod pack to the inactive side.

 Spyboy,

Sorry mate, this was the last session for the summer. There will be no FiF until the Fall Campaign which starts after Black September  IIRC. Just not enough people to keep it going through the summer with holidays, vacations and the like.

Looking forward to having you back then however!

I would like to say a huge thankyou to the people who arranged and flew these competitions. Being on TS with y'all has transformed the experience for me, my fellow pilots have been informative, helpful, funny, caustic and above all friendly, coming from all over the world, across many time zones. Its been great fun, so SALUTE and Thanks.

Ps. If you haven't tried these competitions, you should give it a go!

I can't take any credit here... Drookasi was the one who led us this time around. For that he deserves a "Well Done"!

Last session was a good close fight. S! to all, Red and Blue alike.

Indeed.  Full props to Drookasi for his efforts in organizing Blue side's strategy and ops -- Well Done!  S!

Sorry I had to leave a bit early on Saturday's session, but I'm pleased to hear that my comrades in arms carried the operation forward with great aplomb and success.

Salute Gents!  It's an honor (and great fun) flying with you all.  Hope to see you again in Black September and the fall FiF campaign (if not before then).

Cheers,

The "Fall Campaign" for FIF doesn't have a exact date yet.

But, as Gamecock says above, we're hoping to roll it out sometimes after Black September.
