I'm currently reading the (awesome) book about Robert Ritter von Greim. I noticed that he has no skin for his D.VII in RoF.

Is anybody willed and able to do such a skin?
For an experienced skinner it should be fairly simple.

Seems like an odd omission - I wonder why nobody got around to doing one of these before.

I haven't done any German skins for a while, but I still have all my old .psd files so I'll be happy to knock one out this weekend.  Chances of getting it into another official/approved skin pack are slim at this point, but at least we could use it in mods off (and maybe get it into PWCG as well sometime soon).

That would be fantastic!!
It is no problem to add this plane to PWCG.
I can do it and upload the file here for grabs.
Along with all the other ace files i have retouched (Aces are now leader, get their correct unit, skin, medals etc. at historical correct time. Also their time of service, time on leave and correct day of demise if so.
If there is interest in this file i'm happy to share it

I'm certainly interested in that file, but I'd prefer to get it via Pat's next update - hopefully you've shared it with him so he can get it included "officially" into PWCG?

I'm pretty much booked up tonight, and I'm hoping to be doing some work on my long dormant (not yet started) RoF map-related project this weekend at some point, but I should be able to squeeze out the Greim skin sometime this weekend too unless something blows up on me IRL.

Ok - still a WIP, but I'm close to done with this one.  This one below is the FD7 version - he also had a late FD7F version so I'll also do the skin for that version as well.

I used the lozenge pattern and Albatros rib tapes I got from Fubar and Imp a few years ago, so I hope this is pretty close to right at this point - any comments/constructive criticism will, of course, be welcome.

Looks great. IF you want to make it a little more like the Wing Nuts picture just de-saturate the colours.

Good job.

Yeah - I assume you're talking about the red bands?  I was really going more from the Osprey book's profiles and photo than the Wingnuts, but I wasn't really happy with the red yet either (hence the WIP).  I took another stab at it this morning - I think this is a good bit closer:

What do you think?

Yes the red does look good. I was referring to the lozenge actually.

Really?  I always liked Fubar's lozenge versions the best, and they don't seem over-saturated to me, but that's an easy thing to tweak so I'll run another version just for grins and see how it looks.

Well, I dropped the saturation on the lozenge parts by a fair amount - can't see a big difference but maybe it helped a little?

Don't get me wrong I like it too. I was just saying that the Wingnuts picture above has a very de-saturated look. But you're using another reference for your version. It looks good!

NP - been taking another look at the photos and profiles and realized I've got a couple of other small things to fix, so I'll try a little more desaturated too while I'm at it.

Stand by...

Great! Thank you so much for making this skin!!
Yeah i'm with Adam at this point. The lozenge now is something between the fokker lozenge and the Albatros lozenge, somehow in between. I think its a color choice thing that was made for this template, ok for Schwerin Fokker but not for licenced Albatros Fokkers.
But anyway, a beauuutiful skin you made here.

Can you take a look at the vertical fin cross? It's a bit different than yours.
Greetings

OK - I think this is pretty much it (and yes, the tail cross was one of those little things I mentioned needed fixing).  As for the lozenge, I never got different versions for the different manufacturer versions from Fubar and the others way back when (they did send me different sets of rib tapes), so if there's supposed to be different colors for the Albatros-built versions I don't have them at this point.  Would love to have some for future reference (and future skins, if any), but for now I'll probably have to go with what I've got.  Back in the day, the debates over lozenge colors on these forums (and Aerodrome etc.) were pretty much the equivalent of the FM debates about the Fw-190 on the BoS/BoM forums, so I doubt if I could ever get universal approval of any color scheme I wound up with anyway.  Hope these are close enough.

First, the FD7F version (which I believe is actually the subject of the profiles):

Attached File  RoF - FD7F J34 Greim 1.jpg   210.07KB   0 downloads

Attached File  RoF - FD7F J34 Greim 2.jpg   399.19KB   0 downloads

And next, the 2-fer special FD7 version - he was commanding Jasta 34 early enough to have been using the earlier version of the D.VII, so it seems like a good idea to include both versions:

Attached File  RoF - FD7 J34 Greim 7.jpg   393.44KB   0 downloads

Attached File  RoF - FD7 J34 Greim 8.jpg   343.88KB   0 downloads

I'll upload a package with both skins tomorrow - I'm in the middle of another upload that's going to take several more hours to finish (lousy upload speed here unfortunately).

OK - here's a JSGME-ready package containing both FD7 and FD7F skins along with their preview pictures:

Don't forget - must have mods on to use these.

Enjoy!
