Introducing the 103rd Aero squadron!

Getting the 103rd back up here!

Gentlemen! I’ve noticed a distinct lack of USAS squadrons at the front, so I’ve decided to create one.

I am a player that has recent returned to the game after being off for quite a while. I flew with J2 in the early days and JG1 more recently under the handle vonKost. (Both great squads and community members) I followed the game through development and pre-ordered a copy so I have been around since the beginning. Before the game came out I was planning a USAS squadron, but never got around to it, I guess now is the time.

So why the 103rd?

I’ve selected the 103rd Aero Squadron for several reasons. First, they are the direct descendant of the Lafayette Escadrille. When the Lafayette Escadrille was disbanded, the American personnel were transferred to the 103rd. This gives the squadron an opportunity to fly earlier war scenarios and still have a historic mount and perspective. Second, the 103rd was the first American squadron to the front and was flying under French command before being moved into the US 2nd and then 3rd Pursuit Group, this gives the 103rd more historic opportunity as well. Thirdly, the 103rd was not a high profile unit like those in the 1st Pursuit group, (94th, 27th, 95th, 147th) but it provided something like 3 out of 4 group commanders and 12 squadron commanders. Last, but not least is that the 103rd has that great Indian Head insignia that looks pretty cool on all our planes.

What will the 103rd look like?

I’m motivated by historic interest first and foremost. (I daresay most folks here are in that boat) I want to recreate the atmosphere of the USAS in RoF. Considering this, members will hold a particular rank in the squadron and expected to do the job pertaining to their position. Flight leads, section leads, wingmen etc.. all have important jobs to do in a fight and I want to emulate how the USAS operated when we are flying as a group together. This will be part of the website which I created and is linked below.

http://us103.enjin.com/

I'm looking for a few folks interested in USAS to build a core group, SPADs need wingmen!

What are the Squadron Aircraft?

  • Nieuport 11
  • Nieuport 17
  • SPAD 7 150 and 180
  • SPAD 13

What is expected of members?

  • Members will be expected to work together and fly together.
  • Members will need to be able to active Teamspeak 3 and use voice comms when flying together whenever possible.
  • Members will be expected to be mature folks who understand real life etc.. (I'm 39)
  • Members will be expected to be proficient and regularly fly our historic squadron aircraft listed below. That is not to say we will be limited to only these, they are just our "squad rides"

Members are encouraged to choose a handle based if at all possible on a USAS pilot of the period. This is just if folks are into the Role Play side and not a hard rule. Mine is US103_Hunter after Frank Hunter who was one of the 103rd squadron aces who went on to command 8th AAF fighters in ww2.

What do I need to do to join?

Go to the website and register, Post here, send me a PM or give a shout in game and we can talk.

S! and see you in the air!

I have been flying the German side since I began with ROF years ago.

I am not a very good fighter pilot, though I have 8 confirmed, witness "kills".

I mostly enjoy flying the two-seater, especially the DH4 on the Allied side and am fairly good at low-level bomb runs.

I am at Eastern Standard Time.

BTW, I read one of the definitive accounts in the 1960s of the "Escadrille La Fayette" (I believe this is the correct form in French).

I would be interested if your flying times are convenient...

Falcon, I'm in Ohio so I fly on Eastern time as well. I'd be glad to have you in the 103rd, the SPAD is pretty easy to learn. The USAS flew the Bruguet as well as the DH4.

If you can go register on the site we can get you all set up!

HotLead...

I am not sure what use I'll be as a fighter pilot.  Give me a two-seater and a little support and I am fine...  Still have to learn the bomb-site but I am slowly getting acclimated to it.  Just have to learn the wind compensation factors...

Falcon, not only the wind but look closely how high your airfield is in comparison to sealevel and use that info too when setting up the bombsite. I never knew that too but one of our squadronmembers told me that and instead of killing all lawns i actually start hitting something :icon_e_biggrin:  ;)

Thanks so much J2_Marx.  I'll give that a try as soon as I get back to testing my DH4 skills...

BTW, I just read om the IL-2 Koban forum that it is hoped that the development team will be moving their updated technologies into ROF when it is feasible.  I told them to hurry up or the ROF Community may not be there when they decide to return to it... :)

REALLY? Did they give a timeframe? (Eyes widen hopefully.)

@HotLead

Here is the thread on the IL2 BOS/BOM/BOK forums that refers to hoped for upgrade plans for ROF.  There is a highlighted title for the item, "ROF"...

Spins & The Spad C-VII...

Oddly enough I have found the answer to spin recovery with the Spad C-VII.  It falls within the same status as those applied to the Sopwith Strutter, Pup, and the Albatross DV.a, "atypical spin recovery techniques"...

>>>

With the Spad C-VII, if you find yourself in a spin, and you will if you attempt to turn the plane too sharply while losing energy/speed (it is a complete energy fighter), revert your controls to neutral, CUT THE ENGINE COMPLETELY, gently move your stick forward and give opposite rudder to the direction of the spin (if you are spinning to the left, give right rudder).

<<<

You may enter a turning fight with a turn-fighter but you MUST get out of it as soon as you begin to lose speed or your opponent will have you.  Use your attacks to gain speed and then regain any altitude you lost.  As a result, your  firing windows will be very short and you will have to spend more time downing your opponent.

We also still love ROF and I hope at some point we can bring ROF to the new engine and re-release it as a new title with some more planes. I just don't have a way to do that yet and can't make any sort of promise. ROF players will probably be mad at me, but ROF is still an AMAZING sim and in some ways is still better than the current IL-2. I'll keep trying.

103rd Aero status update!

The 103rd is making some progress, we have had our 9th recruit apply. We are in open recruiting mode for the time being to continue to fill our ranks with willing and able airmen.

We had four pilots take part in the Flanders in Flames practice session and are looking forward to more participation in that an other events!

We are holding weekly training sessions on Monday nights to get the new blood up to speed on proper Air Service tactics and teamwork with our mighty SPADs! (we won't talk about a certain Handley-Page fusing incident)

We promoted our most recent class of recruits to full members recently as well and are working on getting some proficient pilots trained to take over flight and element lead spots on the roster. Attached is the "Official" USAS Squadron Order.

Third Flight (Blue) Leader US1103_Cannon has asked me to try to recruit a few more bomber & two seater pilots to join his flight. If anyone out there likes the idea of flying formation and working together with escorts, the give us a shout!

Third Flight flies the DH-4 and Breguet 14 mainly.
