Hi guys,

We have good news, the AoW server is up and running with a more or less historically accurate map depicting the end phase of the battle of the Somme.
(definitely more accurate than the original map)
That means means the no-mans-land, trenches, airfields and squadron locations and planesets are all historically accurate to the mid of september 1916.

Also a few villages have been added and some have been moved to the right location as the map is quite inaccurate.

That means we can start the alpha test for the campaign quite soon.
The server will be running 24/7 in real time and missions can be flown anytime as well.
Since the server is running in real time Europeans can fly missions in the morning/noon in game time and Americans can fly in the afternoon/evening, while the actual time for both would be afternoon/evening when they are flying.

Before flying a mission on the server a squadron leader has to enrol for a mission 1-2 days in advance, for the alpha test we will do this via doodle.
There everyone can set dates and times where his squadron wants to fly and can see whether other squadrons will be active at that time too.
After enough squadrons have enrolled for a day we will announce that day as a flight day, so that only when there are enough people active missions will be flown.
We can see who does what on the server via a log parser, that does allow us to control post battle reports and whether people were flying without declaring a mission for their squadron first.

In order to keep the historical accuracy we will limit the number of squadrons people can enlist in, before the existing squadrons aren’t filled we wont open new squadrons.
That means the British will have more pilots than the Germans but will have to fly much more aggressive missions than the Germans.
Of course we will try to keep people from already existing squadrons (clans) together.

We will track statistics for individual pilots and squadrons, kills are awarded historically accurate like they were awarded in reality, that means every faction has their own ruleset on how to count and award air kills.
Based on the performance pilots will receive promotions and decorations.
Pilots can of course permanently die or get wounded and get holiday to recover from injury and stress.
A pilot death means of course that all ranks and decorations are lost.

We will run the server in “mods on” mode to increase historical accuracy and many more things.
We are open to suggestions as to what mods we should shouldn’t use.
Once we have agreed on a list of mods we will put those mods into one package so they can be downloaded and installed more easily.

Please give feedback and feel free to ask any questions.
Since this is a really ambitious project this will take a lot of work and discussion so please be patient with us while we develop a system that makes all this work.
Also we would be very welcoming towards people that want to reinforce our team, just pm me if you have interest.

Have a nice day, Salute! :)

Hi guys and gals,

We have been running a few tests of the server with an updated map and a mod package over the past weeks.
We did this in a small closed group but now we think it is time to start public testing.

The server is running 24/7 but missions will only take place after an announcement through our website. We will also post these announcements in this thread as well as on the website, so start checking in more regularly.

Before a flight day takes place  we will make an announcement with a link to a doodle survey.
There you can choose which times and days you want to fly.
Whenever enough people have signed up for a mission ( min 6 ) we will than make an announcement to confirm that the mission is taking place.

Please only sign up for a flight day if you are really able and willing to fly.
We don’t want people who have signed up to then not be there when we start flying, because that would be unfair to those who show up for that mission.

We are still open for suggestions as to what mods to use, keep in mind that this is about historical reenactment so all mods are only used for the purpose of  improving on this aspect.

What we are thinking about adding:

ROF_Refined_1.01_Alacarte__Reduce flak lethality (avimimus)

ROF_Refined_1.01_Alacarte__Reduce lethality (gavagai)

ROF_Refined_1.01_Alacarte__Remove ambient flak (mattm)

ROF_Refined_1.01_Alacarte__Reduce rate of fire (gavagai)

To enter the map:

1. Enable modifications (Options -> General)

2. Download JSGME (http://rofmods.com/en/JSGME_Utility/) and install it in the RoF main folder.

3.  Download the AoW mod package

(https://www.dropbox..... 1916.zip?dl=0) and unzip it to the MODS folder.

4. Activate the mod with JSGME and start the game.

This RPG/campaign is a possibility to "relive" the war career of a WW1 pilot.

Historical background:

The campaign begins mid September 1916, during the battle of the Somme.

At that time the germans built their first dedicated fighter squadrons and the french and british relocated many of their squadrons to the Somme front.

The role playing game:

Every player creates a character which he tries to bring through the war years alive and successful.

A character can be killed permanently, taken prisoner of war or wounded.

This means that the player needs to start a new character, however we are not entirely certain yet how we will handle this in the campaign.

For example in the War Thunder campaign players who lost a pilot that had successfully completed 15 combat missions, could start a new "veteran character" to assure that there always would be enough pilots with a high enough rank to lead a squadron.

Every new player is tested by flight trainers initially to confirm s/he can start and land safely as well as perform a basic navigation flight.

After a successful test pilots will be assigned to a unit by their respective high command (a group of 2-3 players).

The player tells his squad leader when he has time to fly and will conduct as much training within the squadron as the squadron leader deems necessary, before being allocated to combat missions.

This depends on the squadron leader and might range from flying a few rounds around the airfield to training of formation flying etc.

Squadron leaders:

A good squadron leader is essential for the success of a squadron.

Not only making the right decisions during a mission, but also estimating when new pilots are ready for combat missions, since every loss in personnel and material will be felt during the next mission.

The flight days:

Our aim is it to have players not only fly during certain events once a week, but to have missions throughout the week at completely variable times.

But flight days will only happen when a certain minimum of players have signed up for it.

Missions:

There will not only be combat missions but also courier/supply missions.

Old planes that are being replaced with a newer model will have to be flown to a central depot and the new types flown back to the squadron's airfield.

There are rules during the missions.

Military hierarchy has to be respected while flying.

WW1 planes didn't have radios so any form of communication during flight is forbidden, to enforce this rule we have special rooms on our teamspeak that mute all players.

The exception of this rule is the crew of 2 seater planes, which are allowed to talk with each other, though not other planes in their formation.

We are completely aware of the fact that we can't reliably enforce this rule, that why we hope the playerbase will be mature and cooperative in this regard.

The map:

There will be no rigid frontline like in the Rise of Flight career mode.

Thanks to historical surveillance maps we can adjust the frontlines and see the no-man's-land grow bigger over time to get a grasp of the sheer destruction.

Some villages and airfields have been added or adjusted.

Alpha test:

For a test mission we need a minimum of 6 players, there can be several missions on the same day.

The test dates and times are determined by doodle surveys we will be psoting regularly.

During the alpha we will test different mods and rules as well as building a playerbase big enough to start beta testing.

The beta will be about finding the most fun, realistic and rewarding ruleset for the role playing game.

Planes during the alpha phase:

Nieuport 17.C1 Brit. + Russ. versions so people can look into it without buying any planes

F.E.2b

Albatros D.II

Cooperation with the community:

Aviators of war is a project by the community for the community, so everyone is welcome to contribute to it by criticising in a constructive manner or discuss any ideas that might be helpful.

AoW has its own (non final) website with forums attached to it: http://aviatorsofwar.clans.de/forum

This project is massively dependant on getting enough pilots into it so tell all your friends about this and even your neighbours cat. ;)

Unless I'm mistaken, that time puts it right in the middle of the day for North American pilots, so you'll probably have a reduced number of participants as many of them will be in school or at work at that time.

Just an FYI (for a test, it might not matter much but I thought I should point that out).

With our current system people can vote for flight days via doodle, so if there are enough americans voting then flight thays will happen at times that are better for them. :)
We set our server up in a way that the ingame time is morning when europeans start flying and its past noon when americans start flying so both have daylight for flying, since the server is running in real time.

Hi guys,

We have finished testing the map and are now ready to go to the next phase.

The next stage is testing our squadron system, organisation of flight days within squadrons, the supply system and squadron statistics.

For this initial test there will be 2 squadrons, one German and one British.
Each squadron will have 1 squadron commander.
The squadron commander will be responsible to hold doodle surveys within his squadron and announce flight days whenever enough pilots have enlisted for the same day and time.

A squadron commander announces a flight day by signing his squadron into the master doodle survey, where all squads announce when they will be flying and with how many pilots.

If the squadron commander can’t or doesn’t want to fly but enough of his pilots have enlisted for a certain day, he can assign one of his pilots as flight leader and give him a task for that flight.
For example “Shoot down enemy balloons near x” or “Do a patrol over Y”.
As long as 2 pilots have enlisted for the same day and time the squadron commander can announce that his squadron will fly a mission.

The server will be running 24/7 during this test and will be restarted once every 24 hours.
After every restart we will read out the server log and tell the squadron commanders what their squadron has achieved on that day.
The squadron commander will then transfer this information into the war diary, this will allow every pilot to see and compare the squadrons statistics.
For example lost planes, completed missions, downed planes etc.

If a squadron has taken losses in man or material, the commander asks the headquarters for resupply.
The headquarters will then tell the commander how many pilots/planes in how many days will arrive.

Communication within squadrons is done via chat rooms on the AoW homepage.
There we can create groups which share a chat room that is closed off to outsiders.
Squadron commanders can issue orders for flight days, post links to the squadrons doodle survey in these chat rooms and will have access to special chat rooms for communication between them and headquarters.

Since we want to have 2 squadrons for this test we also need 2 squadron commanders.
For this we would like to ask someone from the community to volunteer for this job.
The squadron commander will have to do a lot of extra work, because he has to manage when and how his squadron will fly.
He has to do doodle surveys every week and remind his pilots to sign up.
As I already said above he will have to write the war diary for his squadron and organise supplies if needed.
So as in real life the position of squadron commander is not only prestigious but also demanding.
For now we only need one more squadron commander as I already volunteered for the position, however I will leave the choice of the faction to the other volunteer commander.

The squadron commander does not have to fly every time his squadron flies, he just has to appoint a flight leader and give an order for that day, so the main time investment is organizing the squadron and everything it needs to function.
Also the squadron commander can train his squadron if he wants or appoint one of its members to train the rest to ensure his squadron operates effectively.

Just a quick reminder to help you stay up to date on everything related to AoW, there is a Clansweb App available for all smartphones that allows you access to the chat rooms from your phone.
This way squadrons can communicate more easily internally and always be notified of new doodle surveys.
Of course the app is free and we don’t want to force anyone to use it, just to let you know of this possibility.

Good news everyone,

We now have 2 squadron commanders, me and Deciman both part of this project from the very beginning.

Deciman will be commanding Jasta 2, while I will be commanding No. 60 Squadron.

That means pilots can now choose which side they want to fly for, for the first part of the test.
Later on you can choose to fly for a different faction/squadron.

For now we will need 9 pilots for the German side and 12 for the British.
I made a doodle survey similar to the surveys we used for the flight days.
Please note that we want the Entente to be numerically superior in the air, as they were in real life.

Flight days will now happen more dynamically and require less pilots.
From now on squadrons will be planning their missions independantly from one another, so it is not always guaranteed that you meet the enemy in the air and also it is not guaranteed that the squadrons will be flying in similar size.
This will lead to more realistic engagements in the air.

List of planes for this test:

Nieuport 17C.1 (free russ. version and brit version)

F.E.2b

Sopwith Strutter

Albatros D.II

Halberstadt D.II

Hi,

We got our squadrons filled up quicker then expected, which is a good thing!
This made us think about adding another squadron, before we do this we have to do a few organisational things, so expect news on this within a few days.
For now I removed the limits from the Doodle survey so more people can now select their faction.

I would like to remember everyone that in order to fly for the german side one must currently own either the Albatros D.II or Halberstadt D.II.
However the Nieuport 17C.1 Rus is free and availabe for the Entente faction.
Also I want to ask everyone who wants to participate in this test to create an account on clansweb.com and contact Bluhm or me via forum or PM to request an invitation to AoW.

Hi guys,

I have updated the doodle survey to also ask whether you are from american or european time zones.
This is important for us to ensure that there are enough americans in every squadron and faction, so that missions can also be flown during their times.
Please update the survey with your information.
Link to the survey:

http://doodle.com/poll/zmuggxmpw2gpiwa3

Also the modpack you need to install to fly on the AoW server has changed, you can get the link to the modpack on the AoW homepage, together with instalation instructions.

We have made a survey to see which planes players own, since this is very important in the campaign.
As time progresses squadrons will be equipped with new planes so it is quite important for people to own those planes if they want to avoid changing their squadron or becoming an observer.

http://doodle.com/poll/2urmak5im6rvf2ii

As soon as all people who have signed up in the doodle survey have registered on clansweb.com and have been invited to their respective squadrons we can begin the test.

Hi Sowercrowd,

In order to join AoW make an account on clansweb.com, then write me a PM containing the name you chose on clansweb.
I can then invite you to the AoW project, after which you will have access to the internal parts of the homepage.

You probably clicked on the link I posted in response to Oorpii, which you cant acces if you are not a member of AoW.

this link should however be accessible to you:

http://aviatorsofwar.clans.de

Also please note the doodle surveys a few posts above, to let us know what planes you own and for what faction you want to fly, during this phase of the test.

Hi guys,

next tuesday the 18th of april 2017, the next test phase will finaly start. :)
We still use doodle surveys to determine flight days, but the links to those will only be given out through the website.
The reason for this is that, should your enemy get their hands on it, they could use the information to only fly when numericaly superior.
Thats why the Sqn. Cmdr. give these links out only in the squadron intern chats.
So if you are not used to checking the homepage regularly you should do so now. :P

Hi guys,

while this test phase is running, quite a few sorties have already been flown and a lot of planes lost due to accidents on both sides. :D

But we noticed that only few of the people who have registered for this test, have flown missions or even responded to the doodle surveys.

So I want to clear up a few things, because I believe the lack of participation comes from not understanding the system.

Flight days:

Every single day is a flight day and our aim is that every squadron flies at least 2 sorties per day, better would be 4-6.

Our aim is not to have sorties with as many pilots as possible, but to have as many sorties as possible with 2-4 pilots.

This way we increase the chance that multiple squadrons are active on the server at the same time and the probability of encounters increases.

The squadron specific doodle surveys:

On the homepage each squadron has a separate chatroom that only members of the squadron can see.
There a squadron leader posts doodle surveys, usually once a week and the pilots can chat about things.
Here is an example of what such a survey might look like for a random day.
Click on the images to enlarge them.

In this example there could be 3 sorties on that day at 12, 16 and 18 o’clock.
The squad leader will announce these sorties through the squad chat and the faction  page on the website.
For the sortie at 16 o’clock the Sqd. Leader would for example tell Pilot 2 to lead the formation and give orders to shoot down a balloon they spotted during the 12 o’clock sortie.
Though it is necessary that at least 2 pilots make their mark at the same time, the sortie that results is not limited to those pilots.
Other pilots from the squadron can join that sortie on short notice, without marking it in the doodle survey.

I would also like to explain the website a bit better, because some people had problems with it.
A picture says more than a long text so I photoshopped a few screenshots from the homepage, to answer questions some might have.

This picture shows the homepage of the Royal Flying Corps, only members that are part of it can normally see it.

In this picture I wanted to explain the navigation bar on the left side a bit, because I know that it can look a bit overwhelming.
As soon as we have french squadrons, there will also be a main page and  forums for the french squadrons.

To anyone who has questions about AoW of any kind, or has feedback/input for us, feel free to say it.
We are happy about everyone who asks a question, because it not only helps you understand, but it also helps us understand where we need to be clearer. :)

Is there any AoW statistics webpage? Aircraft lost on each side, number of remaining pilots etc.

Not yet, the problem with such a statistics site is, that the germans could see when the british have no planes left for example.
As of now, you can only see this information about your own squadron, an overview for your own faction will come later, because right now there is only one squadron per faction.
The faction overview will be good to encourage  friendly competition between squadrons. :D
We will however, after this test phase, publish the war diaries of the 2 squadrons.
In the war diaries the sqd. leaders make an entry every day, describing the sorties that were flown, planes/pilots lost and targets destroyed.

Hi,

First of all, I want to tell you that I find the campaign project you have initiated  very interesting for two main reasons:
- the realism of the campaign (without comms, limited aircraft stocks, historical front, etc.)
- the "living" side of the project with a logbook per pilot, the follow-up of flights and victories, etc. (Is this still planned car because we have not had access to it so far ?)

However I would like to make some suggestions / remarks:

  • for the mod: please give us an option to download a version of the mod without .exe
  • for the Teamspeak: could we have two briefing channel by team (if we have two group of one team but not in the same flight) ?
  • to have more flexibility in flight management could you imagine the following things:

1) The commander HQ defines the list of objectives to be achieved during the week "to do - list of objectives" and the conditions to achieve (minimum example x pilots)

2) The commander HQ assigns a certain number / stocks of aircraft with specific series or skins to each subgroup of the squadron (example N62 / etc ...) in order to make each subgroup responsible for the aircraft

3) The leader of the subgroup takes the initiative to realize specific objectives according to the numbers and competence of his pilots

4) The person in charge of the sub-group met on the "to-do list" if the objective is successful and the result is published in the HQ with the names of the pilots, the pilot's status, the aircraft statuses

=>I think with this suggestions:

> he should have more flights in the weeks, pilots are able to make a flight in case of "unexpected" availability

> each subgroup take more care of planes

  • Bring more life to the front:
    • Generate random AI flights in the absence of a pilot in one team (Triggers can add AI flight by counting  number of players, check on Syndicate mission "A day at Front").
    • Add some troups or vehicles movements on ground (maybe is already there because i saw train)
    • Ensure that the area/map of action is not too large

=> In wanting to do some very realistic things, we must not forget that Rise of Flight remains a game and that one must find there its pleasure. If there is no comms (there are no problems there), no flights on the front and no enemy encounter too often, I'm not sure that many will find this pleasure.

We were not looking for the dogfight all the time, but like the 1916 pilots, at each takeoff we hope to find the enemy to face it. Now, when you take off in a server that is known to be empty of humans and AIs, this hope is nil.

I am well aware that you are in the test phase and it is for this reason that I allow myself to make these comments which I hope are the most constructive possible.

Thanks !

Genius

P.S.: Sorry for the google translate
