If a bear can be in the artillery, why not in the airforce too?

(directly from Wikipedia)

The 25 September details released by the French War Department were unclassified and became public knowledge as described by one of his flying comrades (name withheld due to security reasons):[16]

Guynemer sighted five machines of the Albatros type D-3. Without hesitation, he bore down on them. At that moment enemy patrolling machines, soaring at a great height, appeared suddenly and fell upon Guynemer. There were forty enemy machines in the air at this time, including Baron von Richthofen and his circus division of machines, painted in diagonal blue and white stripes. Toward Guynemer's right some Belgian machines hove in sight, but it was too late. Guynemer must have been hit. His machine dropped gently toward the earth, and I lost track of it. All that I can say is that the machine was not on fire.

Additional details were furnished by Major Brocard, as listed in an article from the Paris Le Matin:

The last fight of the French aviator occurred four or five miles inside the German lines northeast of Ypres and opposite the British lines. Captain Guynemer was accompanied by Lieutenant Bozon Verduraz, who says that they were flying at a height of 15,000 feet when Guynemer sighted an enemy two-seater, which he attacked. Almost at the same moment Verduraz saw four German monoplanes approaching and turned toward them instantly so as to draw them off. They circled around for a while and then disappeared. Verduraz then returned to the place where he had left Guynemer engaged with the German biplane, but Guynemer had vanished.

Interestingly, the video in the "Vieux Charles" thread takes issue with that report and gives several reasons why it's ... unlikely ... That discussion starts around 5:30 of the video.

So, that seems a bit controversial to say the least.

We probably should edit the Wikipedia article at least to include some suspicion on the "painted in diagonal blue and white stripes" part...

But this could give more insight:

Interesting read -- it seems like there are common elements from each report intermingled. One thing I do find interesting, is that nobody else mentions Coppens who, according to the video, allegedly spoke with Guynemer that day and apparently said he (Guynemer) took off alone.  I guess, 100 years later, it's all somewhat moot, so I guess I'll just think of it as another one of those events "shrouded in some mystery" that we're unlikely to ever completely resolve.

Anyway, I'll let Danelov get back to reporting the daily chronology, with my apologies for the slightly off topic tangent we took.  ;)

Georges Guynemer(N.3 Spad XIII S504, 53 victories)killed in action near Poelkapelle. Shot down by Kurt Wisseman from Jasta 3. In combat sortie, take-off from Les Moeures, delayed until 08.25 by fog. Of the two wingmans, Sgt Risacher´s Spad engine would not start and impatiently Guynemer took of only with S/Lt Jean Bozon-Verduraz. Guynemer spotted a DFW C, NW of Ypres and dived from 5000 ft to attack. Bozon-Verduzaz after the attack prepared for another diving pass when he spotted eight german approaching and turned toward them. He lost contact with Guynemer and also not trace of the DFW. Risacher finally was able to start his engine and arrived in the combat area. He spotted Guynemer Spad over the Houthulst Forest, very high and coming down in a spin. ID was not difficult, Guynemer´s Spad XIII had pocket extensions on the lower wings, insted of being round were square and was the first in N.3 to have that. Busy engaging a Pfalz, he had not so many time to follow all the events, he spotted Bozon-Verduraz in combat with some five Germans and after his version, Guynemer was downed by the gunner of the two-seater and not by Kurt Wisseman. Although Wisseman claimed a Spad over the right location of the combat, he never claimed that it was Guynemer. Also he was not longer available to say something more and was killed somedays after on Sep 28, 1917 after combat with two S.E.5s of No.56 Sqn.
