Central Telegraph Office set on fire, Liverpool Street rail terminus and Royal Mint hit; 3 others bomb downriver. Total of 4.3t bombs (72) dropped causing worst civilian casualties of war: 158 killed, 425 wounded including 46 children in Poplar school(Service casualties 21). Gothas on return repel Bristol Fighter(observer mortally wounded), one of 94 defence sorties. Brandenburg awarded Pour le Merite but injured in crash (June 19) returning from Kreuznach. Circling, Circling, in the sun.  Desperately trying to use my gun.  Up and down and around about.  Left and right I through my Scout.  When I had that Hun, on the run.  My little Newport she spun.  Down and down, with speed I went.  Into the ground, without wings I was sent.  In the mess the empty chair is set.  My flying time is spent.

Trentino: At 0230 hours surprise Austrian attack by 7 battalions with 103 guns and mortars in close support recaptures all 3 Mt Ortigara heights and repulses 7 Alpini battalions in evening (and on June 26). 
Italian losses 5,633 men (including 1,800 POWs).
Sea War
Black Sea: German cruiser Breslau destroys Russian radio station and lighthouse on Fidonisi Island.
Britain: Admiralty forms Convoy Section to provide escorts and organize ‘evasive routeing’ based on Room 40 intelligence. Room 40 now sending 66 special telegrams per month based on German codes or signals, especially 
from radio­-happy U-boats via 40 British Isles intercept stations(11 later in Mediterranean)which often fix their bearings.

29th victory of Karl Karlchen Allmenröder(Jasta 11 Albatros D.V): At 18.46 RNAS 10N Sopwith Triplane(N5376), W of Quesnoy. Ace Gerry Nash's controls were damaged. He fell out of the fight and managed to land safely – but behind the enemy lines, where he destroyed his plane before he was captured. This night, Collishaw team(band of brothers)of the 10N, they swore to keep a sharp eye out for the Albatross of Richthofen's squadron which had brought down Nash, specially a green one(Allmenröder Albatros).
56th victory of Manfred von Richthofen(JG 1 Albatros D.V 1177/17): At 18.40 one 53 Sqn R.E.8(A3847) near Le Bizet.
