Sale looks pretty good. Never really checked into DCS, as I'm just not a fan of post-WWII flight sims (though I might be tempted by a good Korean sim or the chance to fly Skyraiders or Hueys in a good Vietnam sim). But I do love the A-10, and the Huey, so maybe it would be worth taking a look during the sale.

But I'm confused about how they package their content - specifically, what would be the difference in terms of play capability between buying the "A-10C Warthog" module (which looks like it used to be a full-blown standalone game) for $11.99 versus just buying the A-10A module for $3 ? In other words, what would I get for the extra $8.99? Is it just that one is the "A" model and the other is the "C" model, or is there extra content included with the $11.99 module? If you get just the "A" version module (and that's the only DCS thing you own), can you do anything with it other than just fly around the DCS World all by itself and look at the scenery?

I'm intrigued by some of the possibilities, but after plowing through their web site I've gained a new appreciation for the "simplicity" of the RoF business model :)

And I too was put off by the title to that other thread (not having DCS, I really wasn't interested in reading about how one spots aircraft in DCS), so I appreciate the opening up of this better-named thread.

The A-10C is the real deal with advanced systems modelling and a fully clickable cockpit. The A-10A is the simplified flaming cliffs version.

Aha - but can you do more than just fly around and sight-see in the A-10C if that's the only DCS thing you buy, or do you need to buy something else to get missions to fly and things to do/blow up while you're flying the thing?

Yes, there are dozens of user made missions because the mission editor is pretty easy to learn.

Good call with the new thread Zoltann. :S!:

For anyone else still considering picking something in the current DCS sale, it finishes at 8:00 AM Monday 20th Moscow Time (Midnight this evening Eastern Standard Time, 5:00 AM Monday 20th British Summer Time).

Personally I find the A-10C a bit daunting for my first jet sim, but the F-86F Sabre is well worth a go and fairly easy to learn once you've grasped the basics.

'Bunyap' has done some great introduction videos to DCS and the Sabre.

The manual for the real aircraft ties up well with the simulated one http://www.mediafire.com/view/r33oes59v3a2a54/F-86F_Flt_Manual_+_perf_data.pdf

There's also an original training film for a very similar aircraft which is well worth watching.

Remember it's a 'Study' sim though, if you're the sort that likes to jump straight on to an online server and ask 'How do I start the engine', you'll find DCS a bit frustrating.

The 'P-51D Mustang' & 'Fw190 D-9 Dora' are also very good for us more 'Propellerhead' simmers.

Panthercules, don't get addicted to skinnig in DCS, we'll need you here to process our skins once 777 has taught you how.

Played about with the mission editor last night and I agree it seems fairly straight forward, two of us were able to get a Sabre Vs Sabre server up and running online fairly quickly.

No chance of that, though I am itching to see how my personal RoF skins design would look on my new DCS A-10C and Huey

Yup would be nice to be able to start the plane by having someone swing the prop and you work the magnetos etc. Love my new sabre Dora Mustang Huey Mil and A10 , great planes and best most realistic sim around now I think :)

Thanks for thread, Zoltann! I've bought the Sabre and am in love with it… first DCS jet I find enjoyable to fly, rather than doing my flying for me while screaming about altitude :D .

Indeed, thanks for posting, OP.

I picked up the F86F over the weekend and am really looking forward to putting some flight
time in once I get the controls working properly (for some reason, my headtracker and js weren't
working on the Sabre - despite being just fine on the frogfoot).

Also, thanks to Sid for the vids - I'm sure they'll be both interesting and helpful when I revisit
the game with a working Sabre.

Cheers,

No! The 109 this month.
Which one? The Mk IX (early 2015) or the Mk XIV (April 2015): http://forums.eagle....ad.php?t=116893" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://forums.eagle....ad.php?t=116893
The Spitfire will have very sensitive controls.

Good news, Demon! Thx! Yes, I was taking into account the 109, and then I was expecting an Allied plane next (P-40, as I see). I wasn't sure if they would give priority to a short range plane like the Spit, more associated with early war / Battle of Britain.

But I see that they have lots of WWII planes for 2015. Exciting!

Spitfires did sterling work in Normandy actually… I am amazed though that there is no news on the Tiffy!

I know, but she is not generally associated with late war combat. From all I know – and I am out of touch with WWII – the Spit remained at the backstage. The glory usually goes to long range planes, hence why I was in doubt if she was in line to be released or not. But, hell, they will release the P-40! Classic ride :D

The Normandy map is an unfortunate geographical choice for the aircraft in DCS. The Typhoon might belong but the 109K and 190D have no place there. So it won't be a "Normandy scenario" for a very long time.

If The Fighter Collection acquires a Typhoon then you will probably see one in DCS.

There is a couple of Typhoon around.. Hendon, Shoreham etc.
There are also sabre engines in museums for reference as well…
and I'm sure the DCS mob will add further aircraft once the Normandy map is out next year :)
