It hasn't gone unnoticed by us that the number of people player Multiplayer during the week has dropped significantly. Our server is practically empty, except on Sundays. It seems, all there is on offer are Quick Dogfight servers.

If there are players out there that are not interested in Fur-ball or Duel servers, but would like to fly objective oriented missions online, please keep reading.

The alternative to Dogfight mode is Cooperative mission mode. Unfortunately, in Rise of Flight it is impossible to start a co-op mission from a server on your own. Another issue is that you can't join once the mission has started.
The "Active Front" mission concept has been designed as a co-operative mission, but using Dogfight multiplayer mode so you can join at any time. Even if the server is showing no players in the server, you will find an active world with up to 16 AI planes doing their missions: bombing, patrolling, attacking balloons and engaging each other.
  • AI flights will take off at regular intervals to achieve an objective, which will be communicated by subtitles after take-off. The player can join these AI flights and help achieve the objective.
  • Each sortie will last up to 30 minutes.
  • When selecting an airfield and aircraft from a flight (choose: bomber, escort or patrol) you will be notified how long it takes before the next flight will take off. Since there are multiple flights per side, you should never need to wait longer than 7min 30s.
  • The number of AI aircraft will be reduced when more human players join and vice-versa to keep the server running smooth.
  • Only planes needed for the next mission will be available on the airfield. Besides these, there will be a small number of reserve aircraft for individual sorties.
  • Maximum players per side is 20, thus a total of 40 on the server.

There is currently one mission running, with an early 1917 plane set. When all the bugs have been ironed out and maybe more objectives have added we will also create a version with a 1918 plane set.

Check it out and have fun!

Anyone that has been flying the mission, please leave your feedback in this thread.

I already have a suggestion: In the current version (1.1) you can't see from which airfield the first next flight will take-off. You will only see it after spawning. It may be better to have only one airfield active: the one with the flight that will start the soonest.

It looks like a lot of thought and effort went into creating this mission. Looking forward to trying them out.

Maybe this quasi-multiplayer design might ease some of the single players into trying to pilot online.

I can see some very very interesting encounters, not knowing if your enemy is going to be AI or a real person, though some fly like they are AI… :D

Maybe get rid of the kill messages as well? When we flew the Artois mini-campaign they were turned off, and that was very refreshing.

Well ROF from what I see offer us to start coop mission and others to join in.

All we need is hyperloby alike program to see the pool of interested pilots and for those pilots to see who is hosting and what and when will mission start (lets say start mission at 15 or 30 minutes rounded marks).

I am fairly new to ROF, but the concept where you can take off again after you get shot down is DF to me no matter how you camouflage it with objectives. Compromise could be 10 minute cooldown if you die, or 5 minutes if you did not RTB. This could be good compromise to good old IL2 one life per coop mission concept.

I still don't understand why is it so hard for new sims to make in-game integrated lobby for players to chat and arrange coops?

Oh one more question? Could you run this with mods on? I can't believe it that such a nice mods found on this very site like ground textures and no ambient flak are not used at all servers nowadays. Unless there is some valid system reason for it not to work well with MP?

Great to see someone doing this kind of thing for community.
Salute!

Good idea. It would be nice to have an option to escort bombers / recons that in fact have an objective to fulfill. It makes worth the ride.

But there are names for the missions? How can we know when they are on-line?

Look at the name of the server, it will show " SYNDICATE: ACTIVE FRONT" .
At the moment, there is only one mission. Still fine tuning.

@Cyclops: I agree about the lobby, it would be better. Unfortunately, "all we need" has still not happend after years asking for this…

In the end, Syndicate should received a very warm thanks from 777. Few other organizations have given so much time to help keeping ROF multiplayer alive.

I've not taken the plunge into MP as yet. I am going to though but just need to get off my lazy so and so. Though this sounds interesting, objectives are much more my thing than pure fur-balling too.

@SYN_Vander Yeah, I was kind of hoping this might be heard by someone in 777, it's more for BOS that I fear if it comes down to DF only.

As for ROF, you fellas done wonderful job. So good that I am glad I jumped into ROF only now when this and PWCG coop generator exist :).

I just flew a mission with a lot of success and it felt like true coop with exception I fought human scout that came to intercept us bombers. Those AI scripted timed 'missions' really improve MP server over anything I've seen so far because it's feels like you're part of the flight even for likes of me that are always playing alone (*sings* sooo lonely… :D).

You have a really great concept here and it was fun to try out. I really wanted to try escorting some of the two seaters, or fly a mission with some of the AI, but I was never able to link up with them or catch them taking off. When it says "flight 1 will take off in 5 minutes," it should also say from which airfield and in which aircraft.

P.S. I'm not a fan of maps that are missing no man's land. It makes navigation much more user friendly to keep the maps where we have a visual representation of the front. I saw the little makeshift trenches, fwiw, but you're making the map less accessible to more casual pilots.

Yes, this a really great idea! Thank you for this, it was fun tonight.

I started with the strutter, waiting at northern airfield, few minutes later two AI strutters spawned, we took off together, climbing to attack an airfield. No problem so far, but AI dropped bombs from altitude, hard to do that without bomb sight. Is it possible to program the AI to do a low level attack …? Or much better: Would it be possible to take over control of a flight using the rof order system (do like me etc.)?

I would suggest repetitive messages of actual target and maybe bomb load, too. It was impossible to keep up with the other RE8, having the 12bomb config and 2MG at the rear was too heavy.
Just some thoughts …

I'm not really a MP kind of guy, but I did enjoy the work we were doing a few months ago on the "Coop Corner" missions. I liked the basic concept of the coop missions, but the limitations of the Coop format did seem to get in the way of the fun and the thing seemed to pretty much peter out.

This sounds like an intriguing hybrid. I'll try to remember to pop in next week and give it a go.

Thanks for all you guys are doing to keep evolving the RoF experience :S!:

I gave it a quick try yesterday, and it was good fun.
But somehow I was missing my objectives, or what target the bombers are going to attack.
Like Fokkerfrei mentioned, I think more Information about what to do, or what to achieve would be helpful.
I really like this kind of missions.

Thx for your fantastic work!

- repeat messages
- Strutter altitude and bomber speeds
- more AI fighter interceptions
- trench lines for easier navigation

I didn't know, but I agree with Gavagai – the no man's land is an important piece of the puzzle. It is refreshing to fly without ambient flak, but we kind of grow accustomed to the mud (not the ambient flak). I have to be honest, the mud might lack for me.

I don't know if it is too difficult, but these types of missions could have a mod mud, like the additional bomb craters of the Arras map. But, like I said, maybe it is too troublesome to do. But if it is a copy and paste job or a pattern, it could be worth to ask some people in the community to volunteer for that. Maybe do a sample that can be applied to any map.

I imagine that not all the mud should look like "the mud". Maybe some fronts were temporary and didn't get wasted, but perhaps a line of craters and some washed out land. But I have no idea how these things are made.

I like the bombing / recon runs, but I didn't follow any. I just flew a bit. But if it is a real run, getting to the objective and getting right back, like anyone would do, would be fun to help as an escort or to intercept as a foe. But Gavagai is right again, I saw the warnings of flights taking off, but I didn't know from were. And the map is nice. St Quentin and its surrounding are beautiful!

I'll try again with more time. Thanks for putting it up together.

Got a little lost later on, no mud/scar to blight the land but no biggy, just my poor nav skills.

No enemy encountered? What was I? A mozzie flapping about annoying you?
But I do agree about the mud, it has become so much ingrained into us it's difficult to orient oneself without it.
On the whole even when I ran into a tourist luffing about the skies on a sightseeing trip :D I totally enjoyed the time I had there.
Cheers guys

I gave it a try last night with only a few people on. For me, a lot of the excitement comes from not knowing if the encounter involves a real person or not, and the AI sometimes ends up surprising you.

Quite a bit of air activity at the time I was flying, really was impressed. Saw a friendly aircraft landing while I was taking off, then two enemy DFW's bombed my airbase while I was circling so I chased them and engaged, getting oiled subsequently but managed to land on friendly side after getting shelled ferociously by AAA during my glide over the lines/river divide.

Took off again, and saw two pups engage a lone Alb attacking our balloon not too far off. Again, really thought at least one of them was human…

All this in about 15 minutes. Your experience and mileage may vary. Nice work Vander! :S!:

somewhat off topic here but just got done flying our sunday mission and I must say that the reported death of RoF has been put off for a bit! WE had about 3 hours of 60+ people on the server and a great time was had if not by all, certainly most. At 12,000 ft I did not feel safe from being bounced from above. Most of the action took place above 10,000 feet. Great fun and when I flew the Dolphin real useful in that I had enough time to recover from my inevitable spin.

well, i like the general idea. keeps the sky from being empty and the mission alive so that i could (theoretically) play even if nobody else is. also, it gives the mission the ability to support lopsided team numbers (so i don't have to join the stormtroopers just to make the map work).
.
i haven't look at it yet (just saw the post), but i am interested in checking it out. i wonder if you can be a gunner in an AI plane? this might 'train' one on the bombing run locations.
.
anyways, it sounds like a great idea. i think it will work fanTASTICally. coke. velcro. indy500. ford. intel.

"i wonder if you can be a gunner in an AI plane?"
I don't think so, the only way that would work is for you to chose a two seater and engage Full Auto Pilot, but that option is not available on this server.
