Finally, map mod is out! :x

FWRL (forest/wood/river/lake) is working with mods on.
It's working fine in B career, PWCG, and even quick mission mode.

Just unzip with 7Zip to your desktop, and cut/paste in your RoF mods folder.
In JSGME, activate it any place in your mod list order. It's compatible with any RoF mod i know of (except Xjouve mini map mod)

I have added the more accuratly possible, few hundreds forests/woods names.
I have added the more accurately possible dozens of rivers/lakes names.
I have added the more accurately possible dozens of WW1 forts (you will see them only on map. They need to be implemented ingame)
I have added the more accurately possible dozens of NML destroyed villages, existing ingame.
I have added the more accurately possible few villages existing ingame (will add more in V2)

You have 2 versions of the FWRL:

- FWRL normal (only names added on stock map)
- FWRL old look (all names + old looking used map)

Image

Pict above is showing old-look map. I let you the rendering surprise of the whole stuff! :D
You can see i've changed the forts icons for better ones…

And last, you'll see names and rendering when zooming a little.
Full zoom out, no names are appearing!

Perso, i recomand the FWRL old look. No more "digital" looking map

FWRL normal —-> DOWNLOAD
FWRL old look —-> DOWNLOAD

Enjoy and have good flights and nice navigation!

:S!:

PS: on the to do list, i will probably add all remaining existing towns/villages that are not listed on map… for version 2.

This is VERY cool, Fifi!

Can't wait to use it :)

Thank you for the effort to do this :S!:

P.S. Long term wish…don't forget about us Gotha pilots flying over Southeast England during the Summer of 1917 on our daylight raids. We need good navigational aids also :)

Little new head up on work progress…
Here in blue stripes, all is done :)

Still a lot of work, as my goal is to make it as accurate and detailed as possible close to front line, and knowing the map is huuuuuge! :D

Image

For instance, find the 7-04 square map on pict above, and below how it is:

Image

:xx: Really hope you'll find it useful!
To me, it's better to get names on all those woods/forests, making easier the navigation.

while that is very interesting and helpful for learning a bit landscape geography, I always thought that the super accuracy of the maps makes navigation too easy. I mean, we´ve all look at woodshapes when we´re lost and since they are exact, it is all a piece of cake. But thats not how it goes in real life no-gps-vfr, Identifing even grass airfields is just harder, because they often look like the fields around them…

So what I would wish for, is a mod that makes the map like period flying maps… however there seems to have been quite a variety and with the added problem that a plane might crash on the other side of the lines, the information in the maps was pretty scarce and they where no where near as refined as the groundbound maps for the brass

While i know what you mean, Dr Zebra, what we have ingame (and have to deal with) isn't that far from 1917 maps.
Here a Michelin map 1917 edition:

Image

I verified, and forests (i.e in Epernay area) are exactely what we have ingame, and the names i'm adding are exactely the same as figuring on this map.
Only roads are much numerous than we have in game.

And here a 1914 version map:

Image

Quite well detailed!
I think pilots (french ones anyway) were flying using Michelin maps of that time (of what i recall reading) and what we have ingame isn't that far off IMO, just putting names on what we can see ingame :)

While i could do anything on those dds files, i don't see myself deleting map forests/roads/rivers just to make it look harder or older looking

EDIT:

Ohoh…just realised my mod is working in quick mission builder as well 8-)

Hello FiFi,
I think your maps are brilliant.
I still think you are crazy for taking it on.
Thanks for helping to create something to increase the immersion level.
Cheers,
Spag. :)

Nice, but didn't xjouve's minimap mod already have this?

The mod you're talking about have very few forest/woods, but he focused mainly adding towns/villages we didn't have on map. Problem is most of them aren't existing ingame…and it's confusing for navigation IMO.
My mod will focuse only on Forests/woods, but also on rivers/canals/lakes that are existing ingame :)

I'm also correcting towns name's typo errors (i.e like Lemmers wich is Lemmes in RL)
I also take the liberty to add some "no man's land" historical places not existing ingame, like the Chemin des Dames, Fort Douaumont, Fort de Vaux etc…

Found quite some typos errors…(but our Russian friends are forgiven!)

One of the best is about a German airfield used in my current PWCG career.
Realised that "Chassonge Ferme" doesn't exist, and is in fact "Chassogne Ferme" :D
All corrected.

Flying a mission from Chassogne Ferme, i noticed 2 villages ingame but not on map…so i found them on my detailed IGN map, and added them straight away!

About 60 squared map already done by now!
I even drawn Paris

Good idéa and good job Fifi… :S!:

Merci Pollux!

Ok, half of big map already done!! :)

On pict below, you'll see what is planned.
Very detailed along the blue front line, and less detailed on far side areas.
I just started working on xx-09 vertical map lines.

Image

I also plan to release an optional old looking paper map :)
On pict below, left side is normal map (as currently in ROF) and right side is old looking paper map. This is still WIP, and may change if finding better results…
But it's quite close to what i've seen of 1916 real maps.

Image

Those who will prefer normal map in flight:

Image

And those who will prefer old looking map in flight:

Image

Stay tuned! :S!:

PS: Oh…i've drawn Bruxelles too!…Paris and Bruxelles beeing the 2 biggest cities of our map, i couldn't skip it

Funny thing is i never really realised how big our map is :)

Did you know it covers 5 countries?
France - Belgium - Holland - Luxembourg - Germany

And did you know beside Paris, Bruxelles/Liege/Maastricht/Aachen/Luxembourg could be placed on map?

Quite amazing!

This is really excellent work! If it grows too large, couldn't you break it into sectors for ease of use for those who wish to print it out? Just curious. :S!:

No need to brake it into sectors, because when you will open the mod, you will find each 144 sectors in dds format.
You will be able to print anyone required (but pobably need to convert them in JPEG) :)

By the way, i'm glad to announce only 35 map sectors remaining!
Then i will convert all the 144 dds into old looking map…as optional mod.

Stay tuned :S!:

22 Square map remaining !!
I think in 2 days i will be done with the forests/woods/rivers/lakes :P

I found many WW1 fortresses along the front line, and i took the liberty to add them very precisely, like you can see on pict below.
It's one of my last map done, in Toul area:

Image

I also found many towns typo errors (more than i thought at first) and i corrected them all.
You will not even see any font size/color differences :)

When i will be done with the 22 maps remaining, i'll add all the towns we can see ingame but not figuring on map.
That will be useful, mainly for the one we can see in no man's land and not figuring on map yet.
That will be hard long task, using the mission editor and importing all the towns/villages/farms blocs to check them all…

Sometime, i think i'm crazy :xx:
But result will be the more accurate RoF map ever done :P

Actually I'm enjoying navigating and point to point flying more than combat these days so this mod is perfect for me.

Thanks again for your kind words guys. It really encourage me :)

I found new icon to show the forts, and deleted the crosses i didn't like that much for it…
Looking much better now.
Even found a complete list of WW1 forts along the front line, appearing on Google earth when clicking their coordinates…i will add them to complete the job!

That makes me think, if Vander or other talented modder can make a typical basic fort model, we could add them to the game at the right place for the whole RoF map

They could take place for new missions as well…
Also thinking about PWCG, i could eventually send Pat the forts coordinates on map, so his application could generate troops and artillery on right spot, for any kind of mission (bombing, spotting, attacks etc)…

Very close to release version 1! :D

I finished the Woods rivers lakes placement on 80% of map…the rest will come on version 2, when i'll find Germany detailled forest map. Anyway, nobody is flying that far…

I also finished to add all the forts that took place in WW1 for both sides, along our front line.
Took me some long time, as i had to make research for each one.
Plenty around Lille, Metz, Nancy, Verdun, St Mihiel, Reims etc…
When i will find more (i doubt) i could add them in future release anyway.

Currently adding on map all the no man's land existing broken towns we can see ingame. It will be useful for navigation as we had nothing to locate on map yet.
When that will be done (quite soon), i will release first two version! (normal and old looking) :S!:
