Sorry if this is supposed to go somewhere else but, when using the skin selector for PWCG, how do I know what skin I am selecting? I just see a bunch of numbers that don't seem to correlate with squadron numbers. For example something like 0000-103 does not mean SPA 103. I am really quite lost on how to know what I am choosing.
Well, unfortunately PWCG doesn't have a method for previewing a picture of the skins (and it wouldn't do much good even if it did, as there are no preview pictures for all these PWCG-specific skins that have been created, although there are for all the "approved" historical skins that PWCG uses).
I think the simplest but still pretty useful solution would be for Pat to implement some sort of text-based description to display. I suggested at an early stage of the skin project that we could create a simple text string description to accompany each of these personal skins, if the code for PWCG could be tweaked to pick it up and display it to the player, but Pat hasn't addressed that suggestion yet as far as I know (probably has not had time to think about it much, given what else he has had going on).
For the several hundred recently-created skins that have been added as part of this skin project, since they follow a standard naming convention you should be able to get a pretty good idea of what they're going to be just by looking at the names that are displayed in the top-most skin assignment window (at least for most of the Entente planes). For example, for RFC No. 70 Squadron's Camels you will see a list of skin names like the following in that top-most window:
From that you will know that these skins are for British No. 70 Squadron (GB70) and that the first one will be in "A" Flight marked with a "1", the second one in "A" Flight marked with a "2", the third one in "A" Flight marked with a "3", the seventh one in "C" Flight marked with a "1", etc.
Of course, if you're choosing skins from the other windows (or even some in the top window that were created before the naming convention was adopted) it's kind of a crap shoot as to what you're going to get without some sort of text descriptor to display.
If Pat ever is able to create the capability for PWCG to display such a text descriptor, I'll be happy to provide him with the text strings for all these skins so that it will be easier to figure out what skins you're assigning on these screens.
