I found a few hours spare, so I finished off the latest mission. It was a little bit of a rush job, so there are probably bugs in it and I haven't included everything I want to yet. However, I won't be around for the next few days so I got it done for you guys to mess around with in MP oN Saturday.

Hopefully Quax can take this mission and run with it for a test on his server Saturday if he would like to do so.

I don't have much time, so I'll just say this mission is a dusk mission involving Gothas from Boghol 3 with Dr.1 and Alb Dva from Jasta 11 against 2SQN AFC SE5s and 46 SQN Sopwith Camels. I also have a 32 player version available, but I'm uploading the 16p version for testing. If you wanted to try it in single player, just open it using the mission editor then change "Mission type" to single before saving it in the "Missions" folder.

As always, any feedback/bug reports are encouraged. Hope you enjoy it. You can find the uploaded mission in the first post: "Gotha raid 1918"

I'll take it for a test drive Wednesday.

But, without even seeing it, Gothas (and HPs) never had escorts. No fighter had the range to escort them. That's why they flew at night. Stealth.

Step one in making it "more real" is making it "more real."

To make it "more real" you gotta let go of all the Disneyland/AirQuake notions of the current MP and look to the history books.

Really.

Just for fun I would like to make a co-op mission where a bunch of DH4's attack a target deep behind enemy lines and then have to fight their way back to their own lines.
I would use an air-start for the DH-4's to avoid everyone else having to wait for 1 hr before they can do something. So start the mission from the time the British bombers have been spotted and the German Home Defence squadrons are being scrambled.
I think this would be a fair representation of actual operations of the "Independent Air Force (IAF)"? (and it will give the bomber pilots a fair chance to actually reach the target).

One out of three (or more) targets should be chosen at the start of the mission. Bomber crews will be notified through subtitles. German Defence Squadron pilots will get a warning (Enemy bombers spotted near….heading towards…) depending on where the DH-4's cross the lines, so to mimic actual scramble conditions.

But will we find players to actually fly the DH-4's? :)

HT, I did do some reading before I made the mission, but if I used only Gothas for the Central side then that would be a stupid mission for MP as who would play it? I'll change them to some other two seater that was in the area at the time and forget about ever using Gotha's for MP. There is only one historical scenario where I can use Gothas that have escorts which turn up on the final 30mins of their return leg, but that requires the channel map and I won't make a mission about it until Steam comes out. Technically they didn't only fly at night, but I'm sure you know that ;)

You can read about it here (5 Jun 1917).
http://www.theaerodr...-iii-story.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.theaerodr...com/forum/other … story.html
This thread also mentions how this return escort is also mentioned in "The Sky on Fire. The First battle of Britain. 1917-1918"
http://www.theaerodr...une-1917-a.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.theaerodr...com/forum/other … 917-a.html

Anyway, just pretend the Gothas are something else until I get back.
Cheers

Cool idea Vander! I would add a fourth objective though, this way when you do the probability triggers it comes out to an even 25% chance for each objective. Using odd numbers of objectives skews the probability.

Who would play it? Well, Gotha pilots would play it. The guys who consider themselves fighter jocks and far too elite to fly bombers (snobs) could fly the British interceptors.

The great thing about Coops is: You don't need anyone to fly them. If there are no human pilots, the AI just go on anyway.

I'm not seeing anything about escort fighters in that Aerodrome link (excellent link BTW). You can clearly see that they began flying only at night in September 1917, which is about the time the G.V (which is the one we have) became operational.

There is no problem with doing daylight missions (and substitution the G.V for the the G.IV – their performance was pretty similar) before that date but, again, the escort fighters would have very short legs. You could do the beginning or the end of a mission with British fighters trying to catch the Gothas low and slow, which did happen.

I don't see anything wrong with doing a night intercept of Gothas (without escorts) by Home Defense squadrons over England. PWCG has such missions and flying at night without nav icons is very challenging (spooky actually) as is trying to find bombers in the dark. May be lots of action or none at all depending on whether the bombers are spotted.

On the British side, HPs generally conducted night raids on German industrial targets that are off our maps.

But RNAS HPs flew night missions along the coast to German ports and aerodromes in Belgium (which are on our map) from March 1917 onward. And Gothas flying from Belgium made night raids on the ports in France (also on our maps). That might be a source of mission ideas.

Daylight bombing has all sorts of possibilities for both fighters and bombers.

RNAS DH4s from 5 Squadron (later 205) (and Sopwith Strutters before them) routinely flew from near Dunkirk up the coast to Ostend and Zeebrugge, often with Biffs (48 Squadron) as escorts and frequently met by German fighters.

Similarly, starting in about February of 1918, Independent Force DH4s (most notably from 55 Squadron flying in formations of 12 aircraft) attacked rail yards and aerodromes along the Western Front.

Don't forget the French! Breguet bombers flew in huge formations (80 planes or more!) escorted by SPADs in daylight raids.

A couple of good sources for British mission ideas:

http://www.amazon.co...eth of the wind" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.co...eth-Wind-Story- … f+the+wind

http://www.amazon.co... and bombsights" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.co...planes-Bombsigh … bombsights

(I believe there is a free downloadable copy of Biplanes and Bombsights available from the Air Force War College if you hunt around for it).

Just tossing stuff out for ideas. There's so much good stuff that really happened, no need to make it up.

I'll test fly the mission a bit later today… :S!:

To me, real is fun.

You don't have to contrive all kinds of stuff that never happened. The stuff that actually happened is challenging all by itself. :o

No, this split exists in every sim community: Gamers versus Simmers.

AAR: A good mission. I flew a Camel to Arras at about 8,000 feet. Bomber got the train station before I could reach him. The searchlights pointed out a Gotha at about 6,000 ft and I went after him. I shot him up a bit but those AI gunners don't know it's dark out. They shredded my engine. I was able to ditch just south of the river (good landmark!) safely. Only saw one Gotha. Never saw an escort. I really don't think the escorts are needed. Those gunners are plenty efficient.

Everything seemed to work well!

Hint: Turn your gamma up to 100 percent (mine is usually on 20 percent) and it's still dark but you can see enough to navigate.

Thanks for that HT. I just got back from Louisiana, so I'll make some changes tonight and upload a new version. I'll change them to normal Central two seaters, but I will make a historical based mission for Gothas using the Channel map next ;)

Thanks to Quax, he will host a server again tomorrow so it would be great if yourself and anyone else interested hopped on around 2pm Central time for a run at the mission.

Not sure how the whole mission things works with MP - Do you have to D/L the mission files ahead of time, or do they D/L from the server when you try to join?

Thanks HT :)

I was really glad to have Vnord and yourself help me out today. I know RL gets in the way, but hopefully more people take an interest for future missions. Maybe they would give it a try when there is a proper rotation of missions going on a dedicated server? I don't know..

It was good to find out today that if people join after the map starts they can take gunner positions in multi-seater aircraft so I'll be sure to include those as flyables so people who join late can at least hop in as a gunner until next map.

Fokkerfrei also came in just as I was about to shut the server down and I ran it through once for him, so hope he enjoyed it too even though we didnt get to destroy the target. I have a couple of changes to make to that mission after today, so I'll do those and update the link in my first post. After that I will post some more about the next mission I'm making.

If there isn't much interest, which it doesn't seem to be at the moment, I'll probably only crank out about 10 of these types of missions and I'll focus on my SP idea.

Maybe next time.

Don't sweat it guys I'm not quitting after only a couple of weeks :) I plan on giving it a couple of months to gauge interest, plus I'm hoping to have enough missions for a little rotation when RoF is released on Steam.

The new version for the Halberstadt Raid is now in the link in the first post. As for my next mission I've made a proper night raid using the Channel map.
For the 16 player version there are four Gothas who were unable to attack London due to poor visibility, so they began flying south and targeted the area of Dover. Its around 10pm at night and the Pups get scrambled for an intercept to try and prevent the Gothas from hitting their targets of the Dover railway station, a troop encampment near the Dover fortress, a factory on the Dover outskirts, or the Dover dockyards themselves.

The Gothas don't have to fly all the way across the channel to win though, once they get outside a certain range of Dover to the south then they have 'won' the round. However, if the Gothas suffer 75% casualty rate then the Entente will win. I don't know how this one will turn out, but I certainly think it is something out of the ordinary for MP since Central only has bombers and I hope it will be interesting to play. I anticipate it being a real cat and mouse chase in the dark.

This one should be complete tomorrow sometime, and afterwards I'll be doing an early war planeset with recon missions.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Halbie mission today. It was too light at first but much more challenging in the darkness. It might be interesting if it was to start at dusk and progress rapidly to dark as the attacking planes cross the lines.

The Gotha mission sounds interesting, especially since there will be no scouts on the Central side… no dogfighting for a change. And in the dark… might be really hard for the scouts to find the buses. Maybe there should be searchlights in the vicinity. Is moonlight an option?

Anyway, I hope that you keep it up Requiem and that more players will give it a go. Maybe a post in the General section of the forum linking to this thread could help spread the word. :S!:

Next mission takes place March 1917 and involves No. 29 SQN British N17s escorting a No. 59 SQN recon R.E.8 against Halberstadt D.II and Albatros D.III of Jasta 11 in the Douai area. After this I have some plans for either a Belgian themed mission using the Channel map, or something with the French and Breguets.

I will report back on the next mission soon, but for this Saturday I'm aiming to test the "English Channel Gotha Raid" mission. I'll schedule it for 12 pm US Central time and see if this time is better for people to turn up. The mission played much better than I expected it to as I really enjoyed being a Gotha gunner on this mission. The searchlights, moonlight, AA, and the gun flashes at night give it a really cool atmosphere! The Pups have plenty of time to get the altitude they need to attack the Gothas, but finding them and bringing them down will be a difficult challenge :)

Added the fourth mission to the first post: An Entente recon mission using 2 RE8s escorted by 6 N17s. They are up against 6 Halberstadt D.IIs and 2 Alb D.IIIs. The RE8s have to photograph either a railway station, artillery position, infantry position, or a supply depot. I have the recon system working in this mission, so the RE8s need to fly over the target who will then be notified via a subtitle and the recon camera icon. The RE8s need to click the flash camera icon 10 times to take 10 photos and then head home.

This mission is pretty much finished too (2 missions in a week ain't bad :)), so I'll add this to the test on Saturday.

Well the thing is my home connection isn't really up for hosting 16 players at once, so thankfully Quax hosts the missions on a dedicated server on Saturdays for me. I thought Saturday was a good option since it can cover most people's time zones, and I've seen plenty of people on other servers so I thought it was a good time.

For today, I've started the Co-Op corner server now since I have some studying to do, so it will be on for the next 5-6 hrs before I start flying. There is a player limit of 6 people due to my home connection (I don't know if it can handle any more), but there will be 16 slots available to us so any positions not taken by players will be AI. All the missions have the AI scripted in order to encounter each other, so even if only one person is on the server they have plenty of stuff to shoot at.

In any case, I'll leave Co-Op corner up for today and I hope to see some of you for the testing of the Gotha night mission and the Entente Recon mission tomorrow. These missions are pretty fun, if you haven't given co-operative mode a try then I encourage you to do so! :)
