So welcome to my new campaign were you can fly the Felixstowe from it's home base and across the North Sea hunting German U-boats.

Thank's again to Vander for producing his Channel mission from which I learned how to make the U-boats dive. And thank's to Louvert for pointing out the book it's based upon.

Please report any bugs in this thread or PM me.

Download

The Campaign:

Box.com: Spider_Web.zip version 3, 35MB

Extract the Spider_Web.zip to your Rise of Flight directory. Play the missions from the Spider Web tab of your mission screen.

The readme is available below:

Box.com: Readme & maps PDF 3.7MB version 3
(this is included in the above download but you can get a separate copy here)

Spider Web campaign readme

The Spider Web is a six mission campaign flying the Felixstowe F2 flying boat from Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Felixstowe. You’ll search the North Sea for German U-boats over a patrol area known as the Spiders Web centred on the North Hinder Light Vessel.

This campaign was inspired by reading “The Spider Web – The Romance of a Flying Boat War Flight” by P.I.X a Canadian Royal Navy flying boat pilot who served on at Felixstowe. While not an exact historical recreation of the missions described in the book it will give a flavour of the types of operation flown by Felixstowe flying boats. The six missions cover the whole range of missions flown with the emphases on anti-submarine patrols. There are two changes I’ve made to make the campaign work with the RoF Channel map. First I have moved the North Hider light-vessel and the centre of the Spider Web 15 miles closer to Felixstowe so that they are on the Channel map rather than being positioned just off the top. Also the airspeed indicator on the Felixstowe and the easy gauges reading in MPH rather than Knots so I have changed the size of the spider web patrol area from 60 nautical mile across to 60 miles to make navigation easier.

The missions are two to three hours flight and so most player won’t want to fly the whole thing in real time. The flight out to the patrol area and back can be done on autopilot or level autopilot. I have tried to optimize the object count so you should be able to speed the game up to X8 on a mid range computer.

You can fly on any difficulty settings but the real challenge is to fly the missions without map icons and attempt the challenging task of navigating over water. For this I’ve included the course, distance and flight time for each waypoint. These have already been corrected for wind drift. This assumes that you fly at a steady 80mph IAS at 1,000 feet. It is recommended that you leave subtitles on in your settings. To help even more I have included a printable map for each mission at a scale of 2mm to the mile at A4 size. Simple print them out from Acrobat Reader and tick the do not scale option in the print dialogue. The position of German submarines and other enemies have been partly randomized so the missions won’t always play the same way.

Have fun,

Prangster

Looks very cool - so great to see quality third party missions/campaigns showing up for RoF - they were always great fun back in the IL-2 days.

D/L'ed both files - this looks great - unfortunately I have to travel out of town for the rest of the week so I won't be able to try it out for a while, but I'm really looking forward to doing so when I get back.

Thanks :S!:

VERY EXCITING! Good stuff, and thank you!!! I just may go back to flying SP for a while :D

So, if encounters are randomized, wouldn't flying at 'x - anything' be sort of counter productive, or at least ruin the moment of spotting the submarine? Not sure about anyone else, but going to be masochistic and fly these in real time :xx:

It is very tough spotting subs and getting to weapons/bombs range before they dive if the sub AI is on maximum awareness, almost impossible in fact, so wonder if that is also randomized.

Although I can't really test it right

but I'm sure this is a (another) hit.
Thanks prangster.Keep up. Please.

You kidding ?
Well, it couldn't be simpler than this.
Spider_Web.zip  \data\Missions\Spider Web\media
this is the file structure into "Spider_Web" zip file. So,
"data" goes into "RoF folder", overwrite when asked.
Nothing, ofc, from your old files will not be deleted.

So just unzip it to the Main RoF directory? Not copy it into the single player mission folder? Thanks …..

Wow, this is what I love about the community here. Having flown other sims in the past, it seems with this one people here are interested in the history of "WW 1". This was a war that I didn't know much about but Prangster's campaign I have learned something new.

Thanks Prangster! Hope to see more!

Well, yes.
It's pretty much self-explainable.
RoF got those folders already:
Rise of flight\data\missions
and this should "fit" into it, not
"copied into single player mission folder"
(we don't have "single player" mission
folder, right?)
You'll end up having these folder(s) on
the end:
Rise of flight\data\missions\Spider Web
(and it will have folder "media" into him)
Good luck. And - enjoy. When you can. :D

Prangster, 777 Studios can thank you. Wihtout this campaign, I will never have bought the Felixstowe. Nor the field or weapons mods. I'm not that much interested by antisubmarine seaplanes patrols, but there are too few solo campaings in ROF to pass on this one!
Bravo!

Also, one quick question. Shouldn't all the mission briefings read "1918" instead of all those 1918 dates?

Not sure what you mean but all the missions are set in 1917.

Glad you like :D

It is very tough spotting subs and getting to weapons/bombs range before they dive if the sub AI is on maximum awareness, almost impossible in fact, so wonder if that is also randomized.

The randomness is just that the U-boats can have two possible locations and courses within the patrol area. Whichever course the sub is on you should still be able to spot it if your paying attention. The time the sub takes to dive is also random, some skippers are paying attension and some are not.

Glad you like :D

Ooops! YEs, I meant the missions should be placed in 1918, not 1917, because in summer 1917 the Felixstowe F2 was not in service.
