Since I had to be updating my previous alternative packs anyway as a result of the latest patch/update release, I thought I might as well collect them all in this one place for convenience.

If you have the time, patience and hard drive space, I recommend that you simply download and install the latest Official Skin pack (UPDATED - version 1.033 now available) and all of the approved Community Historical Skin Packs from the links on the "Useful Materials" page (which is linked to at the top of every Forum page).

However, some folks have expressed a desire for some more focused or specialized versions/collections of these approved skins to make it a bit easier to install and use only certain portions of these skins in their RoF installations from time to time.

Therefore, I have created a series of alternative skin packages, organized in various ways, that people might find useful.

Please NOTE - these are just subsets of the approved official and historical skins already included in the standard skin packs featured on the Useful Materials page - if you already have installed all of those packs, you do not need to bother with these additional Panther Packs.

Some of the packages below only go through version 1.031/Volume 15 or earlier at this point, while some are up to date through 1.033/Volume 17 - I will be updating the others below with new links to the latest version skins as soon as I get a chance, but upload speeds are slow here so it may be a while.

[NOTE - since some folks have been reporting problems D/L'ing the recent Skin Packs (Official, Historical and Fictional) from the Useful Materials page links, I have added alternate links to these packs below - see Groups 4 and 5 below. And since someone asked, I've also included a new Group 6 below with the Community Fictional Skins organized by plane type.]

NOTE - new Group 8 added below with alternate links to all the Skin Templates (.psd files for creating new skins)

Group 1 - Historical Skins Organized by Aircraft Type:

Set forth below are links to a new set of "Panther Packs" I have created and posted here for anybody that wants them - there is one Panther Pack for each aircraft type, and each pack contains all the historical skins for that aircraft type from the Official Skin Pack and all 15 Volumes of Community Historical Skin packs released so far. These may be good choices for those who don't have all the planes purchased yet and (perhaps because of bandwidth or HDD space limitations) may want to focus on having just the skins for the planes they own, and don't want to download all the skin packs to get them. To reduce file size (since that's kind of the point here), I've had to use 7-zip format, so you will probably need to get the 7-zip program (free download - Google it) in order to decompress these.

The Panther Packs below are designed to be used with JSGME (just unzip into your MODS folder), or you can install them manually if you're not using JSGME (or if you need to save the HDD space - using JSGME is convenient but doubles the drive space needed when using these packs). The packs contain both the skin files and the preview pictures, and will work in Mods Off mode since they are the approved skins out of the approved skin packs.

All Panther Packs in this Group 1 have been updated/redone so they have all the relevant skins from the Official Pack for 1.031 and Volumes 1-15 of the Community Historical Packs.   (May be updated later to reflect more recent pack releases)

Now, for those folks who would rather D/L a few HUGE packs instead of all these individual volumes, I have created two giant packs of all of the approved Historical Skins from Volumes 1-17. WARNING - these are HUGE - about 2.5 and 4.5 GB each. They are in JSGME-ready packs, so can be unzipped into your MODS folder or you can just copy the data folder in these packs into your main RoF folder if you don't want to use JSGME for these:

Now, for those folks who would rather D/L a few HUGE packs instead of all these individual volumes, I have created two giant packs of all of the approved Fictional Skins from Volumes 1-17. WARNING - these are HUGE - about 7 1/2 GB each. They are in JSGME-ready packs, so can be unzipped into your MODS folder or you can just copy the data folder in these packs into your main RoF folder if you don't want to use JSGME for these:

http://www.mediafire...s_for_JSGME.zip

Central planes, Fictional Volumes 1-17:

https://51abe75d4869...180UVFtNW9rMFk/

(I had some problems getting this one (all 7+ GB of it) to upload to MediaFire for some reason, so I've put it on Google Drive. It seems to be a bit kludgey to get to where you can D/L the file (you have to click on the file name itself to start the process, and then it tells you that it can't preview the file and then that it's too big for Google to scan for viruses), but after a couple of clicks telling it to D/L it seems to get started downloading it OK)

Group 7 - Captured Skins Panther Pack:

This JSGME-ready package contains all known "captured" skins approved for "mods off" use. Players who do not want to keep these skins installed on their PC (because they do not want to encounter them being flown improperly in MP games) can activate this package via JSGME before flying missions specifically designed for use of captured planes (and then deactivate it again afterwards):

This must have been so much work,so thank you! I want to have a bit of variety in the skins I use but tend to stick to a small subset of the planes I actually own, mainly as I keep dying o\one week into my Sept 1916 career, so I am always keen to find skins just for that period. I'd love to have all the skins but there's so many and my HD space is quite limited so it's not really worth doing.
Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to make these and write them up.

Trying to download the latest official pack from Useful Materials since last patch, without success (too slow, leading to connection reset, etc)
Now, in about 20 minutes, I was able to download the historic pack from your mediafire link. Super duper. Much appreciated, sir! :S!:

Yes - it is possible. Will take me a little while to create and upload the packs, but I'll see what I can do. Stay tuned…

Ok, couple of questions here.

I’ve downloaded the official skin pack already, but wanted to download skins for only the planes I’m using, so I came here.

This is what I did. I’ll use the DH.2 as my example

(not counting the default skin)

1.031 Loaded -3 skins (total 3 skins)
DH2 panther pack Historical – 14 more (total 17 skins)
DH2 panther pack fictional - 76 more (total 90 skins)

I'm making two assumptions here.

The DH2 Pantherpack either over road the previous three skins from 1.031 (as I am not getting any errors) or simply omitted them in the process so as not to conflict)…meaning its ok to do as I did?

For this particular aircraft I have all historical and fictional skins that are available, just done so individually for this plane rather then the all planes? In short, though I would have all skins, I would still have 90 for this aircraft if I downloaded 1.031, 1-15 historical and fictional from the useful page…. I know that no one is going to count them for me, but just checking to see if the numbers look correct and that I've done everything correctly.

….and thank you Panther (and anyone that has done work on this stuff). It is appreciated, especially by newer folks trying to figure this all out.

One more question. This one may be dumb or off-the-wall but I won't know unless I ask.

Say, for a novice like myself, I wanted to simply modify an existing skin done by someone else. Example would be (I believe Panther’s), the plane “Black Panter”. Could I use photo shop to upload that (as example) change blackpahther to Blackard, change a few of the colors (but not really deal with layers etc) and do so for my own personal use on campaign beta, or PWCG (not seek approval etc)?

I’ve seen the tutorial (WWDubya) on how to do so from scratch using templates, but I am both a novice and not really interested in creating new, but modifying existing for my personal use. I’m an old hardware guy so I can figure things out if there is a way, just not up on any of this and wanted to know if its possible or if I have to start from scratch with a template)?

Again, thanks in advance.

That's correct.

That's correct (I haven't gone back and counted them myself, but the numbers sound about right and you are correct about the net effect - if you D/L and install the Official Pack and the Panther Pack(s) for any given plane type (like the DH2 in your example), you will wind up with all of the skins for that plane type that you would have had if you had D/L'ed and installed all 15 Volumes of the Community Packs).

….and thank you Panther (and anyone that has done work on this stuff). It is appreciated, especially by newer folks trying to figure this all out.

You're welcome - glad to see some folks are actually finding all this work useful.

Yes - while you may get better results and have more options for doing certain things if you start work from scratch with the .psd templates, it is actually possible and just fine to take an existing skin file (the .dds one), open it up in PhotoShop and change colors or graphics or whatever and then save it back down as a .dds file. As discussed in the Skin Pack FAQ linked to in this thread:

STICKY THREAD COMPILATION - Useful Skinning-related Info

you'll only be able to use that skin file in "mods on" mode unless you run it through the poll thread posting mechanism (also described in that thread) and get it included in an approved Community skin pack, but there's certainly no problem with doing it that way for your personal use. You can use the game's skin viewer utility to check your skin as you go along - it's pretty close to the way it will look in game and is generally quicker than having to load up the game and fly a mission just to check to see how your colors look or your lines match up, etc.

Good luck!

Awesome. Thanks for the help. I'll eventually set up skins for MP depending on whether I end up in a squadron or not (and learn to fly enough to stay alive LOL), but this will give me a nice start and some practice time, especially seeing skins already done.

You have no idea. it can be a daunting task for someone new to organize and set this game and its many features up. These types of contributions make it exponentially easier, while taking the game to a whole new level.

I too, shall chime in with a word of thanks. I am currently rather bandwith and hard-drive limited, and these packs are a great boon to manage that.

Great idea and implementation Panther, I am lucky enough to have saved all skin packs already. Appreciate your continued work and support to RoF and your help to uss lesser mortals with skinning.
Cheers mate :S!:

First post updated to fix links that were broken by the switch to the new Forum platform

Also, I've added a new Group 8 at the end of the first post to include alternate links to all the skin templates.

Ok sorry for asking a silly question, but can someone please tell me how on earth i download these, I click on link, it opens a new window showing the mediafile address and nothing happens, Ive tried it on both Firefox and edge and just downloaded the mediafire desktop app. Nothing seems to work.

Can someone please let me know.

Hmm - since they are my links I'm not sure that what happens when I click them is necessarily the same thing that happens when other people click them, so I may not be able to really test to see what's going on here.  When I click one of the links, it simply starts downloading the file (I'm using Chrome).

My version of FireFox finally started working again after months of not working (since I updated my video card), and I just tried it with FireFox and it also just started downloading the file (after asking me whether I wanted to open or save it), so things seem to be working from here anyway.

Is there a particular link that isn't working for you or are they all having the same problem?  Can you maybe post a screenshot of the screen/message you're getting when you click on a link?

Hi mate, it's all of them. Can download on any other link that uses a different location, but if I click on anylink that use media fire, I get a new window open up, that shows the address in the address bar, but the window itself is just a white screen.

No message or anything is shown.

I'm wondering if it's a windows 10 issue, I've turned off any pop up blockers and even smart filtering in the settings, but I still keep getting just a blank screen. :(

Hmm - still running Windows 8.1 here, so I can't test for Windows 10 issues here.  I know I "lost" FireFox and Internet Explorer for several months (just could not get them to work after I put in my new video card) - they were throwing off behaviors that looked like the kind of thing you're describing.  Switching to Chrome did the trick for me - maybe it's be worth giving that a try (I'm not a big fan of Google, but I've actually been pretty pleased with Chrome since I had to start using it when the others crapped out on me).

So, should I make a thread like this for all my skins?

Well, this has reminded me that I probably need to do some clean-up/rework to update these packages so we can have a complete set of all of them through the most recent released skin packs - I'm in the middle of some big efforts for PWCG skins, so it may be a while before I can do these, but I'll put it on my list.

If you want to create a thread for the skins you've done personally, feel free to do so.  I used to have a thread like that for mine in the early days (it's here, if you want to take a look: http://riseofflight....-skins-central/), but I wound up doing so many of them I had to split that thread into two threads, and then I just couldn't keep the threads up to date.  Eventually, since almost all the ones I did wound up being released in the Official and/or Historical packs (or in the PWCG-specific packs collected in a special PWCG-related thread) anyway, I decided there wasn't much point (and it was kinda confusing for people) having a separate thread and set of links just to my own skins, so I let those threads peter out.

But given that it's likely to be a while (if ever) before we get more approved skin packs released, having your own thread for your own skins so people can find and use them more easily (with mods on, of course) would probably be a good idea.
