Salute Everyone,

It seems that not every Jasta had a Squadron "hack" or "butter machine". OK you ask what is a "butter machine" ?? Well as best I can tell it was normally a two seater that a single seat Jasta acquired as a utility machine. It was used to ferry pilots to and from repair area's to retrieve additional operational aircraft, shuttle them back into the rear for leave and pick up replacements. It was also used to fly officer's and other personal to meetings and to area's that operational gatherings were held. I have also read accounts in which they were used to look for downed aircraft for conformation and to even pick up mail and food stuff's. There is an interesting article in C & C Vol. 21, in which an experiment carried out by Jasta 24 using one as rear cover resulted in it becoming bait. Not all units had one and many that did did not bother to paint them up in the Jasta colors. That said Jasta 30 used a DFW, Jasta 15 in JG II (under Berthold) seemed to have had a Halberstadt that they painted with red nose and blue fuselage, Jasta 18 had a Hannover CL they used extensively and Jasta 40 had a "hack" machine painted up in Staffel colors. A more "famous" one is the is the all red Albatros C.IX used by JGI. It is a really neat looking bird and it's use was extensively documented w/ several good photo's in Ace Profiles no 3 (Manfred von Richthofen) by James Miller. Of course it also seems Jasta 5 had a tradition of using these machines and even painting them up. Glen Merrill'sJasta 5 , Volume 2 you can see that they had an LVGC.V painted up in unit colors. There is also the well documented use of the captured Bristol F2B by the boys of Boistrancourt, which J5 Rumey has already recreated in ROF. Maybe someday they will give us a LVGC then we will be able to have a historical "butter machine" but for now what we come up with will have to do.

Jasta 5 would like to present their fictional version of the DFW for their Jasta. Maybe if they had a DFW assigned to them maybe this is what it would look like…Below all of the other pics….

Overall it looks good, but the whites of the tail and fuselage crosses are maybe much too bright. And the white of the fuselage is personal taste, but also maybe a tad too bright.

Also, did you double up one of the Normal/Shadow layers? Because that seems to be the reason of the white grain on the forward part of the top wings. I don't know if this is on purpose (I'd then suggest choosing a more dirty yellow or grey) or not.
