Devs have their own version of new oil. I think it looks more like oil than what the currently have and more like oil compared to featherds version.

That being said, I did an experiment with some flying goggles and used motor oil sprayed through a spray bottle.

The result is that the oil drops themselves are "invisible" to the eye due to the distance the goggles are from your eye. You cant focus that close which makes it more of a blur in your vision than a particle that stands out. My own feeling was that it should be something more like stationary rain drops that ROF currently uses, only in smaller droplets.

The oil doesnt pool thick enough to prevent it from being very translucent/almost transparent, so its not necessarily oily looking. 777s new oil effect does capture that bit of translucent effect which is nice.

The community has made enough noise on this one for a change to be in the works, so chill for a little and see what comes out of it before you demand to have Featherds (though it is pretty) oil mod in game.

great news chill, thanks

Glad you like it. It'll do until the devs release the next one (how I wish I was a beta tester)

Rev, follow this link and there's a you-beaut compilation of mods that Gavagai had put together with JSGME. Everything is ready to go and instructions are there too.

This oil effect, more realistic then 777 released, should be in the next update as official RoF feature!

I think Chill posted 777 is doing their own improved version of the oil effect…

I definately like the look of the mod. Its more dispersed and less splodgy, certainly more inline with what I would've imagined oil looking particularly since the constant airstream would make the particles quite fine.

That said I'm still very grateful for the new effect 777 added, its a great indicator for engine damage sustained during flight and before you had little warning until the RPMs started dropping or the engine seized entirely. Good to hear 777 is going to improve the effect further, if they really want to spoil us it'd be awesome to get an oil effect done up using similar post-processing techniques already used for the rain as an alternate eye-candy setting from the texture-effect we have now. :)

Sorry, missed that. Would be nice if 777 would do a preview and comment section before official release to the general members, not just Beta testers. More experienced RL pilots out here.

Just a thought.

You could try it, but what you've done looks great feathered. When you have a finished file that you're happy with can I include it in the "mod compilation" jsgme download?

Whoops! Missed that post earlier, sorry about that. Certainly very happy for it to be included in your mod pack.

How do I download it from mediafire???

IIRC this mod no longer works (or is needed as much) with the current version of the game so there's probably not much point in trying to download it now, even if the link still worked.

Help! I tried this MOD and it never worked had the same Oil blotches …So I renamed the old file and put this one in its place. Started getting BIG dark red Squares!….So I removed the file and put the orginal file back..and I still get the BIG block squares! What should I do? I dont want to have to re-install…
P.S. I also tried using JSGME that didnt seem to work for the blotches ethier.

Disable the mod. It is outdated. The current stock oil is superior to the mod. The mod was made back when the oil splatter looked like horse crap thrown at the screen.

Do you still have this problem if you're running the game in "Mods OFF" mode? If so, then something has gotten hosed up and you may need to do a "recovery" and/or re-install. If NOT, then the easiest thing to do is probably just to delete that file entirely - usually the game gets its stock files somewhere else, and only uses files from this type of location when it's trying to use a mod (i.e., in "Mods ON" mode) - so, if it's only happening when you're in Mods ON mode, and you delete the file, the game should default to using its stock file (even in Mods ON mode) and your problem should go away.

Good luck - and welcome to the forums!

Yep, just delete the Oil texture. Sorry for the confusion, have changed the original post to prevent further mishaps.
One day I must see about getting it to work again with the new animations :)

Don't worry about it Feathered. Once the Fe2 is released we'll never need it. :P
