Graf11 has painted my Fokker Dr.I for me. Thank you, Graf.

My ship is called Erlösung. This is a German word meaning "salvation." I cannot pronounce it to save my life, but hopefully my friends in Deutschland and Österreich can coach me through it until I can.

Image

The typeface/font used for the text on the aircraft is called "Breitkopf Fraktur."

Here is a ZIP file containing the requisite files: [link]

Update: a slight change has been made; the white surfaces now have a hand-painted affect. The files and screenshot have been replaced with the new version.

Update: a second change has been made; the rudder coloration has been altered a little bit. The files and screenshot have been replaced with the new version.

(The screenshots of the first and second versions posted can still be seen here: http://img543.images...20116303011.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://img543.images...20116303011.jpg and http://img18.imagesh...20116822039.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://img18.imagesh...20116822039.jpg)

Sweet skin Josh…better get a 6 pack for Graf if you haven't already. Is always nice to see something possible from the historical angle. The umlaut in "Erlösung" is appropriate, since your new skin will probably get this response "ö" from those who recognize it.

Beautiful, voted yes - partly out of selfishness, since if I can recognize you from far enough away, I can run away from you in my Camel.

Dunno about the usual course, but in my case: catch him when he has a few minutes between big projects, and beg!

Ha-ha, Imp. I've wanted something like this ever since I saw an all-black PT-17 doing aerobatics when I was three years old. I don't care if I'm the only black airplane in the sky or one of thousands; I want a black Dr.I. [smile]

It's a yes from me. It's good to see a fictional skin that looks as though it could be historical. :S!:

[nod] That was the idea. I spent several hours looking for historical German typefaces, and finally settled on this one, which was created in the eighteenth century.

Must have been a big typewriter/press. You'd have thought they'd have hand painted it. :)

nice one, recognizable :) I hope you will wear it everytime you are in the sky with your Dr.1

P.S. regarding your flying and shooting skills you fully deserve it - make people fear the black Dr.1 :x :S!:

Looking good Josh!

Only crit would be that the paint could perhaps use a bit more structure and "depth". Might do a tutorial one of these days, ho-humm! Perhaps also show how to make decals look hand painted?

Like this:

Please do, I'd be very interested :)

Yes Tom has a point but quite possibly they would make stencils for the lettering so that's ok. But actually "free style" handwriting would look like this:

http://de.wikipedia...._Kurrentschrift" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://de.wikipedia...._Kurrentschrift

My grandmonther knew how to write like this :)

Hmm, I don't have a clue about how to skin, myself, and I feel that I've already borrowed a lot of Graf's time. What do you suggest I do?

Rightio, will see if I can cook one up over the weekend. Do you guys mainly use gimp or photoshop?

I think they're only called decals on a model.

Yes, its not ironed-on laminate, but I do think you know what I mean. ;)

Yay! Another black Dr.I! But I like it, Josh, and it gets a Yes from me.

Erlösung… Air Leu Sung (With the "Leu" part pronounced in French).

A streaky pattern of lighter than almost black/almost black/a bit blacker than almost black would be a great improvement, talking about depth and structure.

And about the text: Make a graphic out of the text layer and let a filter like "Artistic->Oilify" (GIMP) with a small (3-4px) mask radius run over it. Especially the points and edges get a more "hand-painted" look then, but I embarass myself commenting Graf's work here, of whom I know he's a good skinner.

@Stickyfinger: To each his own, I think I can do pretty well using GIMP. But looking at skins done in both programs, the output seems equal in quality.

Unfortunately, I would not know where to start making a tutorial on how to do skins IN GIMP, I just found it useful to sum up the technical process. A good tutorial including all the tricks like wheatering, paint and such would be highly valued!
