So far, so good - haven't tried out every aspect of it yet, but I used it to create a couple of JSGME-ready sub-packs, and it seems to handle the new .dds preview pictures pretty well. In a couple of cases, the preview pictures seem a bit stretched lengthwise, but I'm not sure why that is or whether it's the preview files themselves that are the problem.

THANKS for taking the time to update this - it's a fabulous tool and it's great to see it working again!

Yes, my feeling is that when jpg previews were swapped by the new dds ones, the devs also decided to change the skin preview dimensions. IIRC, jpg previews were 100x300 pixels, while the new dds ones are reported (by the dds reader function) as 128x512 pixels, so the aspect ratio changed from 1:3 to 1:4. If so, I think the devs jpg->dds converter did some tricks to the already existing jpgs, to make them look somehow good at the new aspect:ratio, using some panoramic scaling or something like that. Of course i may be way off the track with this explanation. Anyway, right now i have set the aspect ratio to a compromise, it's 1 : 3.5, but i'll look what RoF shows and perhaps i'll settle to its preview dimensions in the end.

yeah - that is odd. I just opened a couple of the new .dds preview pictures in PhotoShop, and they also come up as being 128x512 (and looking stretched out), even though the original .jpg preview files were 100x300. When I resize them in PhotoShop to 100x300, they look "normal" and not stretched out like they do when viewed in their native size. I guess the devs must be using some sort of re-scaling algorithm or something for some reason, although that seems like it would be extra work to go through instead of just keeping the new .dds files at 100x300 like the .jpg files that they came from were. Would be interesting to hear an explanation from the devs as to why they took that particular approach.

This is because .dds "should" have a size of power of two - 2 pix, 4 pix, 16 pix, 64 pix, 128, 256, 512, etc. I suspect that this is why they changed the original aspect.

Interesting - didn't realize that the .dds format had those dimension characteristics, since they seemed to save down fine as 100x300 for simply viewing them in PhotoShop - guess they behave differently somehow when actually used in the game menus. Thanks for the explanation.

Awesome! I too am curious about the ratio thing…

Devs, should we start saving our preview shots to 128x512(4:1) and in dds. format? Should be no problem on our end and save you a chunk of time on your end.

When I asked Vik this question after the last update, he indicated that it was actually easier for them to do a batch conversion as part of the skin pack creation process, so he asked that we keep submitting them as 300x100 .jpg files just as we have been doing.

Arghh - although my recent PC build had some hiccups for a day or two, I thought things had settled down and everything was OK, BUT, I just tried to play around with the Skin Manager tool and for some reason it's not showing me any of the preview pictures for the skins. I checked the "helper list" and added all the new plane types, but I'm not getting preview pictures of either old planes or new ones. Also, the preview path (which I didn't change) appears to be just fine. All of the skin files are being found and displayed, but not the preview pictures. I thought this had been tweaked to work with the .dds format preview pictures, and I could have sworn I remember it working before I did my PC build, but it's been a while since I opened the tool so maybe I've forgotten something.

What am I missing and how do I get it to show the preview pictures again?

I know nothing about the skin manager tool so this may have nothing to do with your problem Panther …. but did you remember to install this?

Yep - and I checked my folders and the preview pictures are in .dds format, so that shouldn't be the problem, but thanks for mentioning it - you never know when it's going to wind up being something simple like that.

I don't know what could be - but make sure you use the right version (4), and you are selecting the main RoF folder, or a folder having the same subfolder structure as RoF (regarding skins and previews);

(btw, afterwards, make sure you edit the skin-preview matching pairs to account for the new planes and also correct the pfalz d3 - d12 reversed match, as per first post of this thread).

Shouldn't be - I had it working on 64-bit Win7 Pro before, but for some reason it's not showing them now. I had to do a re-install of Win 7 with this new PC build - I'm wondering if maybe some driver or applet or something that the tool needs (and that I had before) didn't get installed with the re-installation? (Maybe some nVidia .dds viewer or something?)

Attached here is a newish version of Beta Skin Manager.

Notes:
1. archive (zip, tar.xz) loading is currently broken (you can still save to archive though).
To look inside an tar.xz archive, you can (for now) use latest 7zip software (which is a great free archiver program anyway).

2. you can (pre)view skins (i added DDS support).
So you can delete checked skins from any folder, or move them to another folder/archive.

Please test it, if you used it before - and i hope there aren't other bugs :)
Skin Manager Beta 4

Agreed, that and also some 'decals' functionality, which would be:

a) easier to paint (e.g. just a logo, a number, some stripes) by anyone
b) very lightweight (from the point of view of download bandwidth) to automatically fetch when missing (even every time, not to mention caching)
c) would avoid the need for many skins which are basically the same, with the exception of the number, logo etc. - e.g. you can have one squad skin, and the rest, decals which would go as a second layer 'over' the skin

BTW, anyone else having problems previewing the DDS images when using latest version (beta 04), as i have 2 such reports above? Especially if you just installed Rise of Flight (latest version) directly. Because for me it works (win7 64bit), the only new thing i can do would be to completely uninstall RoF and install it again to check if something changed in the last patch. And i don't want to do that, until i'm sure it's something in that area.

Hey Laser - I guess I must have botched something during my new PC build. I just re-installed the beta 4 version of the Skin Manager, and it's displaying the preview pictures again. I still had the previous versions in my download folder, so maybe I just copied over one of the older ones when I was installing everything after the new build.

Sorry for the false alarm.

Still loving this great tool!

Great! :) BTW, AFAIK the latest version has no external dependencies, so if anyone gets missing DLLs (e.g. after a new Windows install etc.) and the program doesn't start, it is a sure sign that you are trying to use an older version of the skin manager.

[AirForce]MOS,

The posts on which you replied are quite old and obsoleted. Thanks for the advice, although people should be extra careful with dlls downloaded from the web. Meanwhile, i'll clarify again, the latest version of skin manager program has no external dependencies (i.e. no DLLs, except from those who must be already available in any Windows install). And the previous versions of the program can not view DDS previews, so they are mostly useless nowadays.

Hey laser - just noticed that for some reason some of the .dds preview pictures (many of the BW12 ones, but also a few others scattered around) are larger than the typical 33Kb size, and the tool seems to be having problems displaying the larger ones even though it seems to be showing the 33 Kb-sized ones just fine.

Any chance you could take a look and see what might be causing that?

It would take one month or two, because i have other things to finish first; but i'm planning to completely rewrite the tool anyway after that, in such a way that: a) it could accept any .dds format (so avoiding the above situation) b) it would be easy to translate in other languages, c) it would also show the skin .dds in a big square and d) would be able to extract and display skin information (textual details) from RoF's files.

From that base, i would be thinking next to make some 'decals' paint add-on, like a 'paint your aircraft' workshop, with which one could easily add/modify nose art, logos, numbers or … dirt to a skin's dds.

All that sounds great - I know that "decal" thing in particular has been a longstanding wish of many folks who don't have the resources, time or skills to do a full-blown skin but would like to have a simple way to just add a little personalization for their aircraft.

One thing I might suggest if you're going to be able to parse out info from the textual information about the skins - since all (or almost all - I may have missed one or two) of the fictional skins' name strings start with "z ", it would be great to be able to search/select based on that "z " in order to quickly pull up all fictional skins (for those who want to be able to find/delete/deal with them separately from the historical ones more quickly than they can now).

No rush, of course (but this would make a great Christmas present, for those of that persuasion :) )
