Well I was thinking of eternal damnation :D

Anyway please don't assume that we will ban people based on the log files alone, that would lead to some false positives and innocent people getting banned. So providing witness reports, screenshots or even a track will make things easier to decide.

The first two have actually done this in plain sight of three of our pilots, not a smart thing to do :)

Tomorrow we'll again run two objective-based missions. Both are mission we tried before and both are slightly modified, based on the experience when we run those missions last time.

The first mission is called Gothas over Reims. It's a late-ware mission. So the planes are Fokker D.VII, (limited) D.VIIF, Pfalz D.XII and Albatros D.Va on the Central side, in addition to the Gotha (which now starts in the air). The Entente has a French squadron with SPAD XIII, a USAS squadron with Nieuport 28 and (limited) SPADs and a RAF patrol (with airstart) with Sopwith Dolphins. The Gothas have to bomb the industrial complex in the north of Reims.

The next mission is the Silence of the Guns mission we also ran last friday. It's a late 1916 mission. The Central side has to destroy three artillery positions, while Entente defends. I made some changes to the mission, both to get rid of some stuttering (due to too many objects) and to make it harder for Central to win and make the mission hopefully last longer than last time.

In both missions, Central has to attack. That's pure coincidence and i actually only just noticed it while typing this :D. We think those two missions worked best so far, that's why we decided to run those again this time.

We'll start hosting the first mission a little earler than usual. Feel free to join our TS3 server (46.4.68.229:9987).

Regarding "ban requests" I guess it might actually lead to some sort of witch hunt if we do display and discuss any accusations in public, especially if the whole incident turns out to be an accident. So please send future reports of team killing via PM to one of our members or post them on our forums. Thank you :)

@WWBrian, just to make sure I checked the log:

17:32:45 Djfriday (TurretDFWC_1) - wounded pilot » WWBrian (DFW C.V)

One week, be sure :)

Not sure if we should announce bans here or on our forums, guests visiting these forums might get the wrong idea.

Understood about PM ImP.

…but for what it's worth…

If it could have been an accident, I wouldn't have posted. I was flying out of the northern base, nobody around…he jumped in….shot me…and rode it down…it was blatent as it can get. Even posted a screenshot for proof that he was in my bird.

and for what it's worth again…

I think posting ban lists on these forums will do more to assure guests that the server is moderated and a great place to fly; rather than a place where witch hunts happen.

But your server - your rules. I'll follow them.

Fyi, I had my first ctd in months when I entered the server today. It was the 14 hour mission, I spawned a Spad 13 at the north-west aerodrome, and had the ctd within seconds of take off.

Flew at Syndicate for a couple hours afterward without a hitch.

Everything seemed fine today for me, I was in there for a good while this afternoon (close to 4 hours maybe?) and left at just gone 5pm(UK), but it seems that something happened just after that as the server lost it's connection to the master server for unknown reasons.

I did begin to see some lag late in the afternoon, one episode so bad that a DrI seemed to stop in the air in front of me leading to a collision. This was the first time in a while I saw lag in hq server.

Server was restarted after this and I was able to fly for another couple of hours with no apparent problems.

Some friends of mine complain that hq Server very "heavy" for their PCs and they refuse flying at the hq. Some of them experienced rof.exe error while flying at the server. Ping is ok, but they have an impression that missions is "overstuffed".
I'm writing this just to keep you informed.

Is this just on the 14 hour offensive mission or do they get problems in Matt's objective missions as well?

There is quite a bit of AI in O_Taipan's 14 hour mission, but Matt's objective missions have been recently reworked to some extent.

Might I ask what memory usage they are getting from the launcher? I know Peter had some problems related to the skins I think, and as far as I am aware getting rid of some skins from his install has made things better for him.

Hello,
the server is great, i only had problems once with stuttering (flew some 20 times now), and a short time after there was a server connection loss. The "Rof.exe" errors happen very seldomly here as well (once), and it seems to be due to the latest update, so not Hellequins-server related.

Indeed at another server (Newbie etc) there is much more lag at times, while at other there is no problem at all. From all servers that i flew on yet the Hellequins is the most stable.

Did i say it is also a lot of fun ? It is !

I am trying to survive, not so much as i probably would in reality, but close.
There are exceptions, though: One time, my DFW was hit and the engine spluttered, but i pressed on and shot down the following SE5, then bombed the enemy aerodrome, and came back to my 'drome when the engine finally died - also managed to land without crash (with a ground loop, but no wing damage) - felt great !

Another time i could not switch to my rear gunner, someone had occupied the seat - so we flew together with him telling me to turn rigth or left, or bank the plane so he could get a good shot on an adversary. Then we bombed the enemy aerodrome, but the engine was hit. I then flew back over the trenches, with my observer shooting down another enemy. Then the engine finally died, and to my horror there were those sticks in no-man's land ahead on the ground, so i landed hard and threw the plane around, to not hit those "sticks" - we both survived and agreed we now had to walk back - this was really fun !

There could be more players, but it is already much fun. The server scenario also seems to improve, some objects like an Entente and german balloon being side by side were removed, the AA changed and some more stuff.

Really fun to be there,
Catfish/Wels

Thanks Catfish, I quite dislike managing to nurse my plane back half-way across NML only to get staked like a vampire

@KAPEH:
Taipans mission seems to be very popular, there are people playing on it basically around the clock. About 600-700 players have visited our server since it is running, which shows how big the potential player base can be.
So it is quite unfortunate that you guys have trouble playing it, especially since you have been regular guests on our server since February or even before that when we were running listen servers. Maybe you can make some suggestions for improvements, changes or even a new mission that is less heavy on your PCs yet offers a similar variety of targets? We would love to hear your opinion :)

As Miggins was asking are our friday missions also too big/heavy or do they run better?

the server is great

I agree - great performance from the server, no lag etc, and a good number of people online (to be shot down by - don't think I've had a kill yet; but that's the great thing about ROF - I'm happy to just fly about and have a clumsy attempt at a dogfight every now and then, before starting it all over again!)

Thanks for the effort in creating/hosting it :)

Sorry guys, but please consider dropping the server limit below 40. Just now there were 45 on, and kill messages were not showing up, there were no bullet hit sounds when my aircraft was hit, and I was pummeling a target with no effect (I can judge accurately when something is amiss).

Imp checked the SPS and it was steady at 50, this was when there were 48 clients connected (I made 49).

I had to some simmilar problems too Gav, bounced by an alby and no sounds of damage at all and I could not hear his engine either (he was only 4 or 5 plane lengths away) only tracers gave him away finally (I should have been looking more, yes), then I had to leave and reconnect as I could not actually get into another plane at all (N28 so not limited). I also put many rounds into an N11 at close range in the second mission to no great apparent effect, but this was when there were (I think) only around 40 clients commected.

Might just have been a data bottlneck down the line I suppose. I'm sure this will get looked at by the "hq Tech Support Team"

Which mission was that Gavagai? There was a master server hickup early into the DFW mission, maybe that's when you witnessed your issues.
What Miggins describes happened when there were actually more than 50 clients connected which seems to be a limited in ROF.
We knew that past 50 there might very likely be issues but we had never tried it on our server before, so now that we tried it we will probably settle with 51 for now. :)

As Miggins mentioned when I checked it was 49 clients (plus dedi server), SPS was between 49.9-50.1 and bandwidth usage was 15% so there should be no problems on the server side.

Yes, it was the DFW mission. FYI, the only times I've seen those master server hiccups recently are on your server with a heavy traffic load.

only in this server, with the 14 hour ground mission, my ROF crashes even if there are only 20 pilots.
This happens after some minutes (about 15) of flight.

I have never had this kind of problem in ROF.

nice missions guys, and good work getting objective based missions running on friday night. Player numbers attest to that!

@ Matt: When bombing from altitute in a DFW, the artillery is not visible; going in low is suicide with the flak… You might want to group the arty so that it can be spotted from higher up (a ridge, row of trees, next to a farmhouse, etc), other than that very nice work,

cheers,

At the same time as there were hickups with the master server on our server it wa also the same thing over on Fast Food - no kill messaages and no scores.
Happened a few times last week.

As for crashes on the 14 hour mission - people using XP (32 bit) will have a problem running high texture detail on it as it has so much going on that it needs Win7 if you want to run high texture detail.
I have the same thing happening to me (with a really good system BTW) and I just swtich the textures and I am fine than.
Because of that I will soon switch to Win7 on a SSD to finally run RoF as it should run on my system.

I'm not sure how the master-server(s) are handeling things. Afaik, there are multiple master-servers for different regions around. Our server is placed in europe. Afaik, except for the J99 server, there are no other european servers around with this player count. Maybe the master-server for europe is causing these problems. In the past week, i had about 8 master-server connection error messages popping up, all of those were in singleplayer and when testing something on my listen server. And that was probably in 3 hours play maximum. I didn't get any master-server errors yesterday though (which would mean that player count and traffic has nothing to do with it).

there were no bullet hit sounds when my aircraft was hit, and I was pummeling a target with no effect (I can judge accurately when something is amiss).
The maximum number of sounds is 64 (if you set it to 64 in the options). With many planes around, you might lose a sound or two. Just test it in singleplayer with 20 AI planes, you'll get the same. Sounds are modelled over long distances in ROF, so the planes don't even have to be close to each other to cause this problem. That's a limitation in ROF and has nothing to do with the server.

Just now there were 45 on, and kill messages were not showing up
That's a well known master-server problem. Kill messages pop up after some time. Again, this can happen with 5 people or 50. Makes no difference. And that happens on every server i've been on from time to time.

only in this server, with the 14 hour ground mission, my ROF crashes even if there are only 20 pilots.
This happens after some minutes (about 15) of flight.
The 14 hour mission is a bit "heavy". It has many objects spread over a large area and 17 (not sure) different planes to choose from. If you run a 32 bit OS, consider upgrading to 64 bit. If you run 64 bit already, delete custom skins you don't need or deactivate skins in the options. I think the number of avaliable planes is causing this problem for you.

nice missions guys, and good work getting objective based missions running on friday night. Player numbers attest to that!
Thank you very much.

@ Matt: When bombing from altitute in a DFW, the artillery is not visible; going in low is suicide with the flak… You might want to group the arty so that it can be spotted from higher up (a ridge, row of trees, next to a farmhouse, etc), other than that very nice work,
That's indeed a problem. Last time, people were mostly flying DFW C.V in groups and going in at ground-level, so they had a too easy time destroying the guns and the mission was over pretty quickly. So i decided to put a few more (two actually) guns at each positions and spread them out a bit more, so a single DFW can't destroy the entire position basically. This time people were flying very high up and then the guns don't pop up when using the bombsight. I had to get rid of some machineguns near the trenches, so the overall ground-fire was much less than last time. I'll think about fixing this problem somehow.

Jason mentioned something about draw distances, maybe you won't have to change anything when 1.019 is out :)

I had the same exact experience Peter!

…me thinks it was the DFW finally being added to the leaderboard that "pooched" the master server for awhile there.

I suspect it had nutin to do with your guys' missions or awesome server!

Some friends of mine complain that hq Server very "heavy" for their PCs and they refuse flying at the hq. Some of them experienced rof.exe error while flying at the server. Ping is ok, but they have an impression that missions is "overstuffed".
I'm writing this just to keep you informed.

Great to read so much feedback about the server. Positive or negative experiences, both are very important to know about. Thank you all!

Saw you in that air tonight TC, trying a sneaky-sneaky low level run on the airfields in a DFW.

Only caught sight of a flash from your wings in the oblique lighting at the start of the mission as you were low over the river behind Verdun.

I did crash during trying to land the N28 after your gunner took out what sounded like half my cylinders. :) Was it a real guy or AI?

I could not even stay with you speedwise with my engine porked, and only my despairing last few rounds must have caught something important and you rolled over to the left and into the trees I think.

Yeah they did - my engine was rattling like an ageing whore's chest and your last burst killed it (and my gunner) and wounded me - I couldn't get altitude or control to land anywhere. Tried to pull up over the trees!

Amazing fight at below treetop height over a river following the bends! It was an AI gunner - but he's dead now.

I thought I was being clever sneaking in low from that direction!! Was going to raid an airfield.

That chase must have looked amazing from above - did you dive in front of me at one point or was that someone else? I got off a few rounds from the front gun but it jammed!

Had a good fight against Peter as well in a DFW - I merged head on with his Camel in a suicidally optimistic way! :)

Was a lot of fun!

Yeah, I was blipping the engine and trying for a sideslip pass across your line of travel, but started to stall, the only thing I could do was throw the power on again and drop the nose, but that put me right in front of your prop for a few seconds.

I really like flying the N28 against the DFW, thanks for the fight.

A little later in the mission you might have managed it un-noticed, but as I took off and circled the field to gain height I saw the low sun catch your top wing and that was what drew me towards you initially.
