Only had time for two recon missions last night, but that was really fun.. Just barely made it home there, hehe.. Lots of action at high alt. Very cool  :icon_mad:

Thanks SYN for VM.

Yes great mission with escort of two seater (Breguet 14) and some good fight at high altitude (either with no victory, each pilot was cautious)  :icon_e_salute:

What a wonderful well-made Vintage Mission for this Easter Sunday, I really enjoyed flying and fighting along the St. Quentin canal, especially for me as a bomber fan. It's a new one - isn't it?

Anyhow I didn't see that VM before. A good variety of mission targets, high and low fighting, in particular I loved to watch those trucks, tanks, horses and carts attacking, artillery firing, the explosions around - that is a really huge nice scenery.

Thank you for that!

Horrido! ff

Yes Fokker. A great VM

I had some intense dogfights against some Se5's in a D7f. I got totally lost trying to find my airfields on this map.

Hi all,

Just wanted to say thanks to all SYN members and VM organizers...

Was wondering if we could have soon The English Channel map for VM!!!

With almost 75 peoples online last time, this map was great to play in... for all kinds of planes (with sea planes).

Cheers

Gen ;)

Dear SYN guys,

Any chance for some new Active Front missions in the near future? They really are my favorite, I'm just a little weary of the Nieuport vs Albatros matchups.

Thanks a lot!

Just a reminder for everyone: Today the 5th Bloody April campaign will kick off at 18.00 GMT. For the next 4 weeks, Syndicate server will host the Bloody April missions on Fridays and Saturdays. The missions are being run with Mods on, so you will not see our server listed in the "normal" mods-off server list on those days!

The statistics page is bugged at the moment... selecting April 2015 shows Bloody April results, and selecting Bloody April shows no sorties flown.

I don't think we have turned on the Bloody April campaign stats counter for the weekend (can't automate this), so we'll just have to find the BA 2015 missions from the normal April 2015 stats.

Today we'll launch a new mission "Italy 1918". It will use the southern part of the Tarnopol map so you can try flying in the wonderful mountainous area there to simulate the northern part of Italy. Unfortunately, we have no Italian or Austrian bombers so I had to use French and Germans ones (Breguet and DFW). Are there Italian or Austrian skins available yet for these bombers?

Nice! I don't know any Italian skins for two-seaters (except for Farmans, but these are too early for a 1918 scenario, I think), however British and French units did serve in Italy in 1918, RE8 for the British and Dorand for the French (which can be easily replace by Strutter).

Henri made a "Austrian-Style" skin for DFW (used for the movie the Italians made 2 years ago), but it works mods-on only...

Hi SYN Vander,

Just wanted to thank you for the last VM Italy mission on sunday, really a big difference with the map and the missions objectives.

But I would also like to say that it seem's that this kind of map/mission attracts a bit less veterans and newbe pilots for a few details...

- Not having a front (NML) or similar, give a biggest challenge for pilots to find the direction they need to go;

- Having a very far front line or recon/bombers targets, make it more difficult when then server has only around 10 to 15 players;

Other than this, I must say that the view with the mountains, was really great!!! ;)

thx

Gen

This was a great deal of fun and an interesting challenge to navigate with no frontline and not knowing the territory like we know the Western Front after 5+ years!  It would have been great to have 75 players on this map, but you take what you can get.

After a few flights, we identified some landmarks that make navigation not so difficult, I think the main "problem" that avoid players to find each other, is that the map is full of forest, and from above it is hard to distinguish enemy plane, except from their reflection.

I enjoy my flights, by a slight wing shaking signal I became the wing leader of a SPAD patrol, and we managed to shoot down several lone Ostrogoths.

However, I find that, even if it is a "fictionnal" map, a little more historical background could be interesting.

The Battle of Istrana, maybe? Now that we have the Hanriot. ;)

Following the discussion in this thread http://riseofflight....asy-game/page-5 (about Germans usually losing the vintage missions and said missions being tailored more to the strengths of Entente than German two-seaters), I wonder if there is a way to make these missions more historical and balanced (in each side palying to their planes strengths way) while still balaced? I know nothing of mission design, so forgive me if I don't grasp complication of what I propose :). Or if such a thing has already been tried and failed.

What's the fuss about? The Germans were much less involved in behind-the-lines day light bombing of railroads, depots, bridges etc than Entente powers - due to Entente having much more superiority over "their" airspace. Instead, most of German activity was photo recon, helped by sperior quality og German-made lens and cameras, it was pretty much their speciality. If we look at list of German C-type planes, most of them were designed as recon planes, or general purpose two-seaters at best, with side order of escort fighters / ground attack planes. Consequently, they are less suited to going far behind the lines and bombing factories than Breguet or D.H.4.

So, how about an asymertical scenario in which both sides has objectives tailored to strengths of their planes? The Entente play like they always did, identifying the targets than destroying them. German players concentrate on their historical roles: Photo recon, ground attack and interdiction.

The historical setting could be any of German 1918 offensives, from Operation Michael (no D.VIIs, D.VIIIs or D.XIIIs) into second battle of Marne in August. German army has launched (another) surprise attack, storm troops penetrated the lines and German troops must mop up the defenders and consolidate while they have advantage. The Entente are using in-depth defence, trying to hold the front sector until reserves can be diverted to it.

The Entente two seaters are trying to destroy supply network behind the lines to ensure that even if Germans break through, they will be unable to resupply attack force and keep impetum; this is done by identifying enemy depots, bridges, railway stations etc. currently in use via photo recon followed by bombing runs. German C-type two seaters must determine locations, size, composition of enemy reinforcements; this is done via multiple photo recon of enemy-held towns, road junctures and railway stations behind enemy lines. German Cl-type two-seaters are supporting the assault itself, and have to clear enemy trench line of machine guns, artillery placements, bunkers etc; a fixed number of these must be destroyed near objective marker to complete it. Completing some photo recon objectives can spawn  Entente truck convoys / trains heading for the front;  pilots on both sides are informed that they have been "detected", these can be destroyed instead of frontline objects to add to (but not automatically complete) objectives they are heading for.

Thoughts?

Perhaps encourage some "offensive spirit" in the Jasta pilots to leave the safety of their lines and start escorting towards achieving the victory conditions.  Hell, they could even try flying some two-seaters once in a while, they are a lot of fun, though the gunner bug is a bit of a kill-joy ATM.  Just a thought, as requested.

As far as navigation on the 'Italy Map' goes, the fact that it doesn't have a front should be embraced for its experience, not seen as deterimental to players.  Players who leave the server because there isn't a strip of mud within visual distance after taking off shall be summarily shot!

Really, is it that much of a challenge to read a compass and use the in-game map?  Granted, I hate the new 'icon compass' since the last patch, it is a real step backwards.

Hi ActionJoe, if you can provide me with planesets/units I'll be happy to add them to the mission. However, it's not really possible to have a different map layout as the " mountainous"  terrain is only limited to the far south/west part of the map and there are only a few airfields...

This Sunday we'll run the "Italy mission" again. Several changes have been made:

-Fixed AAA near front lines not firing on Central side (!)

-Fixed Balloons not reacting to enemy on Central side

-Added RE8 and Camels (British forces Italy campaign) / removed Breguets.

-Added fictional castles to aid in navigation

-Added a bombing objective for each side. This is a big target and the flag colour (icon on map) will show how much of the target has been destroyed.

-Mission set in late 1917, so changed to Autumn landscape

Great, but hope to see vm mission with the English channel map soon.

Why not some Gotha's missions with escorts hitting the english coast, like Dover or other coastal towns targets.

Cheers

Sure, but let's wait until the gunner bug is fixed. Currently you can't use the gunner position in the Felixstowe at all, so it's completely useless!

Today we introduce a new mission type on Syndicate server. It uses Capture The Flag mission logic and is not based on a historical scenario. To make this clear, the name of the first mission is " Blitzkrieg" .

In fact, I intend to use this for "Batte of Stalingrad", but testing online missions in BoS is very awkward (you can't quickly test in the game) and CFT mode isn't supported so I'm using RoF as a "Proof of Concept" environment  :)

The idea is taken from "Heroes and Generals", but it is a fairly common game logic. In order to win a battle, area has to be captured by taking "control points" along a predefined path. A control point is usually a fortified position.

Attached File  skirmish.jpg   45.41KB   0 downloads

Here are the characteristics:

Mission start:

  • Each side starts with two captured control points. One control point is neutral.

Objective:

  • To win the map, enough points have to be accumulated or the enemy has to be driven off the map.

  • Points can be won by capturing control points.

Game logic:

  • Planes can “capture” a control point (achieve air superiority) by flying inside the flag area and removing enemies.

  • Vehicles on the ground will also count so a control point can’t be captured without destroying enemy vehicles inside the flag area.

  • When a control point has been captured, friendly ground units will move in to defend the area (including AAA),

  • Only the two opposing control points (or neutral) can be captured.

  • Control point is shown on map as a flag with a circle around it. The circle shows the influence area of the flag. The flag is not visible in-game!

The mission is up for testing (although our server doesn't show online because of Master server issues it seems).

We'll need to tune the mission parameters, so all feedback is welcome. Things we are interested in:

-Speed of capturing. Is now set at 2x for quicker testing

-AAA near capture point. Only MG's? or keep the AAA gun.

-Distance between control points

If this works, in the future we can make more complicated missions with more/different control points, multiple branches etc. The ideal goal would be to make this part of a larger campaign (also thinking about BoS).

Well SYN was up last night, but must have encountered the master server problem when you put in the new mission and re-started?

Might it be run as mods-on?  Or guess that would still have the same master-server issue...
