Hello everyone!
This is the continuation of this topic. There U can find the early beta version of my simple bombsight calculator program. Here(link out-of-date, download below) is the newest version. Feel free to download and try it. I still didn't manage to make it "Always on top" application. This feature is new to me and I just didn't figure out yet how to do this. If someone has any suggestions please post them here.

This program was wrote in Java. After downloading simply double click it and it should run.

There are two tabs - "Wind" and "Speed/Height". With first you can calculate the wind which you put in bombsight "wind circle". First, set plane heading in left slider, then the direction from which wind is blowing. On the bottom there will be rotation direction (left or right) and number of degrees to set on "wind circle". Left means rotate couterclockwise, right - clockwise.

Example:
Aircraft is heading 220
Wind is blowing from 160
Set left slider to 220 and right slider to 160. On the bottom will be: value 60 and left in green. That means that you should rotate "wind circle" counterclockwise to set 60 on the top. That's it, no calculations required.

On the second tab you can convert speed from mph to km/h and m/s; and height from feet to meters. There is also little field on the bottom where you can set your target altitude in feet, which will substract from the total value of meters.

If anyone have any questions please post them here. When new version will come I'll update this topic.

P.S.
I'd like to thank SYN_Flashman for his level bombing guide. Whithout it I would never done this little program.

EDIT 28.12.2010
I haven't got much time to work on my program because of Christmas but i've manage to implement "always on top" feature, well… sort of. It works only with RoF's fullscreen mode switched to OFF. I'm aware that not all of U will like it but it works. When U set in RoF your display's native res, then RoF looks basically like in fullscreen mode.

Here's short clip which shows how it works and how to set everything. I hope U will have more luck in bombing runs, i've missed my target this time  … Have fun.

Hey Beepee, thats really good! The wind direction works well and makes things much easier for the flyer (i have compared it to the other methods and they all concur).

The second tab is also great with conversions for both speed and height. Also note the windspeed calculation (conversion of mph into m/s) on the speed tab. Should a mission designed wish to use mph for his windspeed in his brief you can convert it back to m/s here.

Also people should note that you can make fine adjustments to the arrows with the mouse wheel.

note for Beepee: currently the height arrow does not move when you rotate the mouse wheel, though the figures do change. Hopefully you can work out how to make it an 'on top' application if possible, however alt-tabbing out to use this (unless you have two screens) still makes it a very worthwhile tool.

I will be updating the Bombsight guide shortly and will include this tool and a link to this thread.

Realy glad you like it :D

Can you check it ones again? The hight slider has range from 0 to 10 000 so there is alot of small "steps" for arrow to move. Maybe you just don't see it's moving? Try to rotate mouse wheel a bit more.

Does anyone know how to upload a file directly to the forum?

EDIT
Ok, figured it out. Forum doesn't allow *.jar files.

You need to install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from this site. Then you should be able to run java programs (*.jar) with double click.

This is probably a dumb question, but is there a way of running java stuff on an Andriod phone? Would be cool to be able to run this on my phone so as not to alt-tab.

Not quite historically accurate though! I imagine they used iphones back then…..

I was thinking about it too :) This whole program is't realy historically accurate :D
Currently I'm working on some visualization of the bombsight setting process. After this I'll try to convert it to Android compatible. Be patient ;)

There may be a more elegant way to do this, but when I control / alt / delete and the window for selection pops up I also get the bottom bar showing with open applications on it. I then slide the pop up window down until just the top edge shows, which means the bottom bar is still showing with a tab for ROF and a tab for the Bombing Calculator. At that point I don't need to control alt delete, I just can click back and forth between the tabs at the bottom bar and can bounce back and forth quickly

I'm running XP again may be a setting that leaves the bottom bar up,

Nice tool!
Does it stay on top of RoF by default? And how do you know the height over sea level of the factory?

For the target height we have to rely on the mission makers to give it to us in the brief as currently there is no height information shown on the maps. They can get this from the mission makers tools

An approximate method is to look at your altimeter when on the ground at your airfield and use that height as it will at least give you an indication of the local areas height above sea level.

Yes, the "Always on top" option is ON by default. But as I wrote in first post this feature works only with RoF's fullscreen option set to OFF. Or as GeezerGamer suggests with alt+ctrl+del (I haven't check it).

Another method to check target height is to land your plane in the place of a target before your mission and check its height on altimeter.

Hi BeePee, Great utility, But… some of us born closer to WW1 than current Afghan conflict have a bit of eye trouble. Any chance Version 1.0 could have expandable fonts for easier viewing. Thanks for your tool.

This is an excellent utility! My only wish would be a bigger font and getting it to run always on top in fullscreen mode.

Hello BeePee before all thank you for this program which works very well. :S!:
One drawback is that the window is very small but for eyes.
If you have a solution I'm interested.
Happy New Year and good flight. ;)

I'm not sure anyone is even using this that I'm aware of, but GL.

For those of you that would like the latest Java JRE, the site posted on this forum appears to be out of date.

The latest version of the software can be found here...  https://www.java.com/en/download/
