Hello everyone,

We are proud to announce the winners of the Aerial Combat Screenshot Contest!

We received so many entries that it was difficult to narrow down the screens to a set of winners and so we have expanded the winners to more than the original 5 we planned. We think we've found a group of screens that embody what the contest and the sim are all about.

Some of you sent other screenshots that didn't necessarily meet the contest criteria we were looking for, but they were nice nonetheless. So we have included a couple as Honorable Mentions.

We will be contacting the winners here shortly about their prizes.

Here are the Winners in no particular order or ranking.

The second-last screenshot is my submission (of the Sopwith Camel in the clouds trying to get on the Fokker DR-1's six).

I am posting the original widescreen version. (slightly compressed to a jpeg)
I am also posting other screenshots from my PC, to show the astounding beauty of Rise of Flight on my machine. (core i7-920, Vista 64-bit with 12 gb onboard memory, Geforce gtx 280 1 gb graphics card and dell 24 inch widescreen monitor / 1920 x 1200 resolution)

None of these screenshots have been altered in anyway, and are exactly as they are in game. I do play ROF with a slightly altered 'startup' config file. (i reconfigured the gamma blue/green/red channels to 1.5/1.3/1.3 to add a bit of a blue tinge, and i changed the color saturation to 1.0) (The startup.cfg file is located in /Rise of flight/data folder. To activate with this altered startup file, click on the ROF.exe file found in rise of flight/bin_game/release folder.)

Altered text :

[KEY = graphics]
filter = 3
forest_distance = 3
forest_quality = 3
fps_limit = 0
full_height = 1200
full_width = 1920
fullscreen = 1
gamma_b = 1.500000
gamma_g = 1.300000
gamma_r = 1.300000
grass_quality = 9
hdr_bright = 0.99000
hdr_contrast = 0.80000
hdr_quality = 0
land_textures = 0
landscape_mesh_quality = 3.00000
multisampling = 2
post_blood_enable = 1
post_bloom_enable = 1
post_blum_enable = 1
post_cinema_enable = 1
post_dof_enable = 0
post_drops_enable = 1
post_effects = 1
post_effects_enable = 1
post_hdr = 0
post_saturation_enable = 1
reflection = 2
saturation = 1.00
shaders = 2
shadows_quality = 1
texmipdown = 0
vsync = 1
win_height = 1200
win_width = 1920
[END]

The overall result is more photorealistic in my opinion.

Adnan.

I have to say I agree with a few of the other posters, I think the last one is the best. I captures the best of RoF in my opinion: Flying through the clouds, the beautiful aircraft model with the shine efects, the ground scenery is at such a distance it looks photo real, especially with the shadows

To me RoF is at its best up at that sort of height, skipping through the clouds and thats what the final shot shows.

Thats not to say the rest are bad, far from it! I like the DVII dispatching the SPAD and the exploding Pfalz is a favorite!

Interesting startup.cfg but I have some questions. My file didn't have

post_blood_enable = 1
post_cinema_enable = 1

and also one other one which I can't remember, so I just added the 3 lines. I noticed you bumped up the forest distance from 2 to 3, but when I do it I don't notice any difference. Your computer specs are about the same as mine except for the video card, mine is a 512mb Nvidia card. If I put the landscape mesh quality to a 4.0000 would I see a noticeable difference?

To me the Honorable Mentions are the only ones worth mentioning. The others mostly highlight the absurd RoF damage model. As someone on the OFF forum mentioned, if one side had those kinds of air-to-air weapons in WW1, they would have won easily. I just can't believe those planes, hit by machine gun bullets, blew up like they were hit by 30mm cannons firing explosive rounds.

The last one is the best. The exhaust, the clouds, the ejected casings, the tracers, the composition, simply superb. It might even get me to take back my opinion of the SE.5a. That big V-8, those straight pipes…you've got me humming the Beach Boy's "Little Deuce Coupe".

The next to last, of the Camel chasing the Fokker down through the clouds, is also excellent. It gives a wonderful feeling of the three-dimensional dynamics of aerial combat. Those two should have won and will grace my computer desktop for a long time to come.

i'd love to know how you came to that assesment Avariel? WW1 planes were a ticking time bomb! they spat oil and fuel everywhere especially over the pilots and engine cowlings, the Germans used 8mm Spandau Machine guns and the brits used a .303, the 303 is a MASSIVE round! and fired with tracer would ignite oil and fuel easily! the only saving grace is that they weren't that accurate and had a large spread of fire especially during sustained fire.

personally i believe the RoF damage model is pretty damned close, if sometimes lessened down

The last ones, which I too liked best, may have lost some points by their going slightly outside the rules.
Jason had stated as the rules:
- Turning off Post Effects and cranking up the AA or AF with your card's software or nHancer to mitigate jaggies is ok too and you won't be counted off if not used.
- Just no special tricks other than what the sim and your machine normally provides when you play.

I don't think the first ones are out of line, they just happen to be shots of fires, which don't happen all the time in ROF. And the one with the dramatic explosion is a flak burst, isn't it?

No one answered my question, so I checked on the initial contest post and see that the winners won some free planes, congratulations!

How about announcing the winners names though and which shots they took?

It was meant to show the damage model wasn't it? Hence why the last two are only honourable mentions.

I am not sure myself what those two lines do. I have just been messing around. The most noticeable difference i have seen is with the saturation changes and the gamma channel changes.
In terms of the other numbers, like forest distance etc. it seems to draw the forest distance out further. The best thing would be to make just once change at a time, and fly the sim, see if theres a difference. Since im so impatient, i make several changes at once and just hope the sim doesnt crash!

Yay I got in with an honourable mention.

My one is the SE5a at the bottom, you can tell it's mine because my bullets are missing.

A few people have suggested I might have used photoshop but I can confirm it's straight out of the game unaltered.

Someone also mentioned I might have bent the rules by not showing the damage model but the relevant rules just said -

"What does "aerial combat" mean exactly? Well, that means we want to highlight the aerial combat aspects of ROF. Such as shooting, damage models, fire, smoke, explosions and parts falling off."

I think it does highlight the aerial combat aspects of RoF, and thanks to everyone who said they liked it. If anyone wants a full size version just post your email but bear in mind RoF outputs very big .bmp files (about 7mb) and I'm not clever enough to downsize them (or, indeed photoshop them).
