Remeber, people where on average shorter in those days. I bet all those chaps are 5'4" (163cm) tall!

Average UK Male height 1830-1870 is 167cm (5' 4) it's 179cm (5ft 9) now so would probably have been somewhere between the two maybe 5ft 6 as an average but remember the average is only 5ft 9 now and think how many 6ft + men you see!

Everyone isn't walking around dead on 5ft 9 are they! :)

There'd have been plenty of 6ft or taller men then. Both my great uncles were over 6ft and they were born in the 1920s.

Also of interest is the secret stealth bomber designed with swept back wings for fast surprise bombing attacks. Shock and awe if you will. Unfortunately the war ended before it could be fully developed and the project was moth-balled resulting in juckende Bälle.

The Handley Page had enough of an impact that most large planes between the wars were referred to as 'Handleys' by the British.
