Hi,

As a terrain builder for other flight sim, I'd love to put my fingers on the RoF and it's landscape capabilities. The map would be pretty exotic for most of you, because it covers Eastern Front from the post-ww1 conflict between Soviet Russia and Poland.
The map depicts the situation from the late Fall 1919 to July 1920 where the massive Soviet offensive was launched.
The front was located on the Berezina river with cities of Borisov and Bobruysk.

Background:

Spring 1920. The Red Army gets the advantage over the White forces inside of the country and starts concentrating huge amounts of soldiers behind the frontline to begin big offensive against Poland. The goal is to get to the Warsaw and beat the oponent. The Poles know a bit about those activities and are prepaparing own offensive on Kijev in Ukraine by themselves.
Polish recon squadrons: 12 and 14 Eskadra Wywiadowcza started to recon the positions. Because of that, the Soviets bring there their best air units including the 4th Avia Gruppa which arrives in the area in the middle of April. Their task is to secure the area and not to allow Polish planes to cross the frontline and take photos. About 30 planes are concentrated in one area. The first combats start taking place…
Polish HQ has one fighter squadron - the 13.Eskadra Mysliwska, newly equipped with Albatros D.III (Oeffag) which secures the 12.EW. The 14.EW flies alone until the 1st of May, when newly formed 19.Eskadra Mysliwska equipped with SPAD 7 arrives on the front…

Planes:

Poland:
- LVG C.V and C.VI (12.Eskadra)
- DFW C.V, Halberstadt Cl.II (14.Eskadra)
- SPAD 7.C1 (19.Eskadra)
- Albatros D.III (Oeffag) Ba.225 (13.Eskadra)
- Breguet 14.A2 (10.Eskadra) - southern part of the front

Soviet Russia:

- Nieuport 17.C1 (recon squadrons)
- Nieuport 24/24bis - (1 and 2 IAO, 10, 11, 12, 13.IAO)
- SPAD 7.C1 (yes, S.7 fought with S.7 in that conflict) - (10 and 13.IAO)
- Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter (French built)
- Farman F.30
- Nieuport 10
- Ilia Muromets (1-2 combat missions at the end of the campaign)

Possible missions:

- Leaflet dropping
- Recon missions
- Aerodrome bombardment
- Dogfight
- Challenge an Ace
- Escort
- Attack river vessels
- Attack observation balloon
- Attack armoured train

Me and my teammates already did pretty similar thing for the RedBaron3D and Targetware sim engine. While on the RB3D we used community made planes and maps, the targetware mod was done from scratch including map, planes (some taken from Richthofen's Skies ww1 mod because we were cooperating very closely), ground objects, scenarios…

We will be looking for any help, especially from the RoF community members from Russia and Belarus because of the need of some historical buildings and primary sources.
Through the last five years I have collected few books in Russian about that conflict and Red Army aviation as well as probably all books in Polish, including some memoirs. So, it will be possible to recreate few historical missions for the both sides.

LOL - never even thought to look at the dates - with all the modded map posts lately I just assumed this was an off-shoot of that.

Well, looks like I'm not likely to have to make good on my offer to test fly it then :)

Not that I claim much expertise, but wasn't that conflict devoid of actual air combat? If I remember correctly, it was mostly recon flights with occasional strafing enemy cavalry counting as "combat" sorties, rather than aircraft engaging one another.

Think of it this way - if you did spot an enemy plane and bring it down - it'd have a major impact on the war effort. Every combat would be meaningful.

Hi,
I picked this location because this side of front actually saw an air combat. Some of my colleagues asked - why not the Southern Front of Ukraine ? The reason is simple - because there was no dogfight in the air.
Depending on an amount of free time, I will start building it this Winter or a bit later. We are still learning the stuff on our Warsaw test map which is a test bed for the own installations like villages or cities.

Lucas ,

Hello , im in uk now so time zones are easier now :)

Question ,

With the warsaw map photo realistic are you basin it off the verdun or large standard map ?
On the verdun map its broken up into around 4200 tiles , at present i have a map im editing and have completed about 400 tiles but i know the was im doing this is slow and couldcause issues later for editing if required.

How are you creating the colour spectum so each tile is different hex colour ( no clashing hex code colours )

Ideally i want a colour spectum the reads left to right per pixel but continues from top left to bottom right line by line pixel by pixel resulting with 4200 independant pixels verdun sized map

maybe you know a better way than justmanually setting hex colours , thought i would ask hope you dont mind :P

Tony,
I created manually the RGB colors for the photoscenery and applied it on the texturemap
Iam attaching a part of the main texturemap which is responsible for the ground texture placement.
Below is an except from the text file, showing how it is done.
The complete photoscenery for the map is of course possible but it will be very time consuming.
My Warsaw phototexture is 10x10 tiles which gives a 5120x5120 pix master Photoshop file.

Hey Lucas,
The map sounds like a great idea. Do you think it can be finished by January 2014? I think we can rule out January 2013, after all, just a little too soon…

Thanks Lucas,

I was half hoping you had perfected an easier way of plotting out the tiles as this is basically the same as what I have done except two things thing.

1/ I made a map that was 40x40 tile top left corner but the remaining part of the map was 10x10 and the map worked fine in tests but then I duplicated the 40x40 tiles so they covered the whole map and it worked and loaded ever so slightly less strain on processor , so now im making map that's 4200 individual tiles (no repeating tiles) but placing the tiles is the frustration and why I was hoping you had a solution I thought about gradient lines across the map then start the next line down with 1 lower hex code from the end of previous line this was the text code numbers are easier to type out , if that makes sense :) , but my photoshop skills suck

2/ you used TGA files, I used DDS files as I thought and was under the impression they get processed ever so slightly faster in this format ,a lot of flight sims use DDS format maybe I just read into this to much …

why did you use tga does it load faster or slower than dds file or have I gone off on a tangent.

I really could do with a expert in photoshop to advise I know it must be able to be done easier than manual plotting every pixel.

Sorry for the long posts but who else can we ask but each other
Best regards
Tony

:)
Since Klementovich from Russian RoF forum started preparing a campaign for the war between Soviet Russia and Poland from 1919/20, I thought that it's high time to start working on the map.

The map will be 256 kilometers wide and 307 high and will cover the Central and Eastern Belarussia. The map will be great for some WW1 Eastern Front scenarios as well. Depending on free time and how the project will go, I will add some old ww1 trenches as well (because they were in use few years later, too)

The map will include the following cities: Minsk, Borisov, Bobruysk, Orsha, Mohylev, Mozyr, Retchica, Homel, rivers of Dnepr and Berezina and many minor ones.

Depending on free time, I may consider creating custom ground textures. All ground objects for the map will be completly new for sure, including buildings, bridges, landmarks.

Currently, I prepared a mesh and managed to load it in the mission editor. Because the map is huge, I want to prepare some "dummy" files/textures without sharing them with the main Western Front map.

I would like to have this map availble to everyone as a mod or included in RoF in the future. Well, time will tell. Many months of work in front of me, but I think it will be worth to expand RoF into some different way.
Best,
Lucas

Adam,
we have many skins already done but they were never submitted because personally I did not want to add too many post-WW1 skins. Sure, there are some, not too many, but we have about 25-30 more.
I am thinking about getting all those paints together and later, once we will have some objects/map/missions to build some kind of JGSME mod which could be easily activated/deactivated. This would be the safest thing for an ordinary RoF user to manage those files.
But I will be remember about your kind offer. Your D.VIII skins are fantastic!

How's this doing? I imagine this would get huge amounts of attention with the release of Ilya Muromets. The official Eastern Front map doesn't really allow Russian Civil War scenarios, not to mention the Polish-Soviet War.

Thanks to the help of Baron von Myakin, I managed to install far better terrain mesh than I had. Since the map is huge, I will probably decrease it's size, because managing it is very difficult. I may continue working on it in Autumn. Now, I have some other tasks to finish. Hope to present more to the community in a few months ;)

Thank you! To make things easier, I used the dimensions of Tarnopol map, so it will be 179x179 km's, too.
The mesh is already in the game. Many thanks to Baron von Myakin who helped me with getting a nice terrain mesh.
At the moment I resized my master texture to have a 10m/pix resolution and I am drawing rivers. It will be very time consuming as there are lots of small rivers + Berezina and Dnepr which are huge. There will be hungreds of marshes and I want to do them right together with some custom texture.

Thank you :S!:

Here are some early experiments with the flooded areas which will be present on the map. Keep in mind - the flight distances will be huge, but I hope that the countryside will be nice. There will be plenty of rivers, some lakes. The area is rather flat.
First of all, I will have to finish water, then fix the mesh so the water surface will be flat and finally will continue with marshes and forests.
Note: one of the screenshots contains our village base module which later will be splitted into different configurations. When starting that, we had no idea that the Tarnopol map will be available, but it is worth to finish it.
