Some details about the new Сareer Mode

Dear pilots,

We would like to give you some details about our new Career Mode that we have been working on so diligently over the past several months. This has been one of the most complex and challenging features we have every made. Below you will find a tentative list of the features it should include when released. To be honest, this has taken longer than expected, but we also added some more items that we knew the community wanted to see. Again, this list is tentative and some items may not make it due to poor test results or bugs, but this is what we hope to include.

  • Covers 700 days of the Great War. More days may be added if we build planes from even earlier in the war.
  • Continued promotion through the ranks.
  • Changing Weather with Seasonal Textures (Summer, Autumn and Winter).
  • New Titles and Awards.
  • More than 15 different types of missions.
  • New types of gameplay, such as adjusting artillery fire or photo reconnaissance, with new interactive elements and equipment such a wireless radio and/or camera added to your plane. You can also watch real-time changes in the world based on the results of your actions such as corrected artillery fire.
  • A higher level of interactivity and randomness during missions, for example, flying close to an enemy's airfield could trigger enemy fighters to intercept you.
  • Combines your personal statistics, events and achievements with real history.
  • Interactive map of hostilities with information about current operations at the front and the location of various units and squadrons.
  • Historically correct squadron’s location and re-locations.
  • Historically correct automatic mission completion by A.I. pilots in missions not involving the player using a new technique we developed.
  • Historically correct awards and conditions for awards.
  • Realistic calendar of European Weather
  • Virtual "Newspaper", depicting timely events at the front, new inventions in science and technology, and list of important aces published on a regular basis.
  • All virtual A.I. squadron mates have their own names, grow in rank and abilities, go the hospital if needed and receive awards for their actions.
  • Ability to meet historic allied or enemy aces in combat situations. If you kill a famous enemy ace he will not re-appear and his kill total will stop in the press.
  • Ability to be transferred to another squadron with promotion in rank.
  • Realistic attrition of personnel and material in your squadron.
  • Repair of damaged aircraft and hospitalization of wounded pilots.
  • Ability to use a custom paintjob after 5 kills.
  • Opportunity to become a squadron commander and plan missions.
  • Planning includes the selection of pilots and aircrafts, which will participate in your flight.
  • Editing a route: choice of range, move waypoints, a height indicator, buildings types, speeds and altitudes.
  • Many new villages, town and industrial areas added to the map along with windsocks at airfields.

These are the basic elements of the new Career mode we hope to include. Not only are we are trying to create aninteresting Career for you, but also trying to add some interesting information about the squadrons that participated in the Great War. So you will have an opportunity not only to read about the history, but also to participate in it. Arobust system with the ability to model all the activities and sorties of a particular squadron on an everyday basis during WWI was just a dream until now. In essence, when we combine the historical aspect with the new Career mission generator we will create something more, in our mind, than just a game or simulation. To us, this has the potential to become a kind of “interactive encyclopedia” or “interactive atlas” of aerial warfare during the Great War.

So we are now proceeding to the testing stage of its development and we hope to have it ready for release soon. Since this is such a complicated feature we cannot give you a firm release date yet. And we apologize for that, butwe don’t want to make any empty promises. As soon as we can give you a date for release we will.

Also, we invite you to participate in helping us add some historical and fun biographical information to thebackground portion of the new Career mode. Please check out this thread. (http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewforum.php?f=315).

This are a lot more and more unique features than I imagined, great!
will this also mean we get more weather types than clear, avarage, heavy and overcast?
When we play a bomber career will we not get the objective to clear an area of enemy fighters?
Will the aces have their own flying style?
It's nice to have a more populated map =)
Which aircraft can be used for arty spotting?

Wolfstrike → 2/28/2011 2:50:57 PM #

One other thing is an option for death = career over.I get immersed when the stakes are high. Its in very few games out though sadly. Here is a post from SimHQ about this feature in OFF

"pawgy to get the most out of the game I really do suggest starting a career...this is where it shines....though be prepared to start up loads of them as you don't last to long but the immersion is superb and when you lose that fighter who has 16 hours under his belt it is gut wrenching experience.Sometimes just taking off you get butterflies as you really don't want to lose him."

Wow! Above and beyond my imagination of what this would be. Even though I'm mainly the multiplayer type, this has got me pretty excited and I'm looking forward to it.

What a milestone in single player history!
If you can get real close to what you have outlined, you will have beat and refined "the old classic" standard for a WW1 Fighter Sim.
Absolutely worth every bit of the wait.
Thank you!

zachanscom → 3/1/2011 3:42:14 AM #

this is great. the sad part is 90 percent of game consumers, ie the mainstream, will never appreciate the magnitude of this accomplishment. they'll just keep playing their call of duties and battlefields.

lets hope some intelligent people out there will finally "get it" and give this game the recognition it deserves.

This is truly outstanding. Thank you guys for taking the time and investing resources to make this possible. I was eagerly waiting for this career mode since I bought the game (I'm not an online bird) and now my experience with ROF will be complete. Thanks again.

I think this more or less covers everything I could hope for a career mode to be. Absolutely fantastic news. Take your time tweaking it, I can wait a few more weeks.

Silenoz → 3/1/2011 7:22:36 AM #

Well I think if the new career mode ends up being half as good in game as it does on paper (so to speak) then we are in for one heck of a ride!

This new update has the ability to make ROF THE best flight sim ever made, which I'm sure is 777's ultimate goal. I have played just about every flight sim going and can honestly say ROF is my No1.

_12F_i-jeanm → 3/1/2011 7:55:56 AM #

Did I really read Photographic Missions and adjusting artillery. Amazing !

I wonder how the quality of pictures will be taken in account in the game. Can't wait this and, soon, the SPAD VII.

J.j. → 3/1/2011 8:12:33 AM #

Main question is: how these spectacular achievements can be done without the addition of numerous two-seater and recon planes?
Until more aircrafts of this type will be added, I'm afraid that the campaign mode will not be as wonderful as described.
Well, I continue to follow from time to time the developpment of this item, I hope all the things planned will be added in a not so distant future, but I think for now it is only hope.

Awesome...very much like the Career mode in RB3d, but with the addition of more simulation elements RB didn't deal with. Plus the fact that the graphics are far-and-way better than that old warhorse.

Cheers! Please release soon!

They've taken the best of Red Baron 3D, Full Canvas Jacket, and Over Flanders fields and have mashed them all together into one epic project that shall undoubtedly serve as a monument to Rise of Flight's superiority and unequaled dominance in the flight sim genre for years to come.

I don't know how to thank you guys at 777 Studios, or really even what to say in general for that matter, for reviving what was becoming a rather bland and ailing subject in the gaming world (World War I, that is), but I feel obliged to find the proper words to express my overwhelming sense of anticipation for this future release.

I guess I'll leave with this:

LONG LIVE FLIGHT SIMS
LONG LIVE 777 STUDIOS
LONG LIVE RISE OF FLIGHT

hq_Reflected → 3/3/2011 7:54:41 AM #

Wow...looks like all the advantages of OFF will be implemented to RoF. Keep it up guys, these news made my day!!! Smile

You guy's seem intent on staying with the cutting edge of flight sim development, and for that I am truly grateful.

It sounds awesome guys. Well done!

MCossack → 3/4/2011 2:47:02 AM #

Amazing.
Just what the sim needed.(actually many more!)
I guess this will make a complete new game out of RoF.

"To us, this has the potential to become a kind of “interactive encyclopedia” or “interactive atlas” of aerial warfare during the Great War."

This is the way I like to expirience any sim!

Best wishes!

SpikeHelmut → 3/4/2011 8:45:41 AM #

This looks like a wet dream of a career mode.  If I get shot down in no-mans' land can I crawl through the barbed wire and dash from crater to crater to get back to my lines? Maybe hide out in a French farm house and get offered some potato soup from a mademoiselle? You guys have thought of everything else.  Seriously, this is an ambitious and awesome project and as a guy who has played airplane games since the original RB (in four colors) and the original Falcon (in Hercules monocrome), it is excellent to see our hobby reach new heights.

skybaby → 3/4/2011 3:35:09 PM #

FINALLY!!! A truly fantastic piece of news for the single-players in RoF.
Absolutely mind-blowing news & by the sounds of it, well, well worth the wait.

Extremely appreciated. Smile

Rise of flight is just great.  Like many others, I am EXTREMELY satisfied with theis flight simulation program.  Besides all of the great fighters, I especially love the Handley Page 0400 for flying.  Is there any chance that ROF will make the huge, German Zeppelin bomber?  That would be a very welcome addition.  The AVRO 504K would be another very good addition.  Just an idea for the ROF development team.  Thanks for considering.

Parazaine → 3/23/2011 8:52:05 AM #

The one thing which hasn't been mentioned is the enemy A.I.

I was hoping the a.i. would have been one of the key aspects that would have been changed...flying against the current a.i. is extremely boring.

Without a.i. that behave believably (like we used to have once upon a time) all the features in the world will be redundant imho.

reachtheskies → 3/23/2011 4:03:16 PM #

A generic -mission generator- Career mode at the moment is keeping Rise Of Flight from true greatness.Still is a good game but for offline flyers out there that crave for an engagin storyline ,it keeps them in the cold.

If done the right way the new Career would make Rise Of Flight the BEST WWI game ever if not for the BEST flying simulator /game ever. I really hope the developers have a look at some older flying games even if they are not 100% die hard simulators.

For example remember Crimson Skies ? It had an incredible story set in the 1930's America that was part Error Flynn movies and part missions from actual things that happened.

Before and after each mission there were Newsparer clips and fake 30's magazine clips and depending of your actions you were mentioned on them. Also there were radio broadcastings between the missions that reminder 1930's radio drama's.Along some great movie clips to move the main story. It was great also collecting various medals and memorabilia depending of your perfomance in each mission.

Also i believe part to the great missions and story that game had was that the engine allowed character animations so you had pilots jump on or off planes/trains/run from flaming jeppelins or try to catch a ride while you spectaculary zipped over a train or atop a zeppelin, people working on top of skyscrapers etc...(those made you actually see the characters the story was based on)

So i really hope along the historic facts and an as possible open but chronologically linear timeline there will be all  the above details added to make for something really special.

The Wiseman → 4/1/2011 3:49:08 PM #

I Have to agree with Parazaine, even with the outstanding graphics and historical mission variants......knowing 2 enemy planes will be flying by when you reach point 'x'-every single time- kinda kills the realisim factor after a short while.
not to split hairs or anger those who have already done some incredible work on this sim, but after 2 or 3 missions in ROF- i begin to long for the type of variety offered in "over flanders fields" while playing the career mode of the HITR expansion, ive been jumped by as many as 12 huns! im sure these next few updates will see a large jump in game playability-mabey a little more randomness might go over well if it could be fit in.
as a sim fan thats been riding a stick since Red Baron 1(yes one)....just a suggestion.

SpikeHelmut → 4/17/2011 10:25:33 PM #

I would like to add my vote for the "death = game over option," with lots of points for having the guts to do so.  Nothing could be more immersive than knowing that when you've bought the farm - by whatever misadventure or happenstance - you've bought the farm.  The goal would then be, at least for me, to survive at least 17 hours in the air (often cited as the average life span of a WWI aviator) and/or making it to ace, before getting a career ending (but not life ending) injury, and surviving the war.

GeneralTso → 4/18/2011 7:00:29 PM #

This career mode looks truly awesome!

If it hasn't already been mentioned, I'd like to suggest another mission type - landing spies. I recently finished ready a good book - "I flew with the Lafayette Escadrille" by Edwin C Parsons. In the book the author mentions missions to deliver spies behind enemy lines. It basically required finding the proper empty field behind enemy lines and landing so that the spy (sometimes 2 spies) could get out. According to the author these mission where more common early in the war. I'm under the impression that these missions where mostly flown by the French. Maybe this mission could be made ready by the time that the Breguet 14.B2 is released.

reachtheskies → 5/2/2011 7:04:02 PM #

Hi there! As i said again a while back i really hope the campaing gets a "personal factor" to make it interesting and not a mission generator type campaing.Just take note at some of the greater flying games out there like Crimsons Skies -even if its not the most realistic sim(if you can even call it that) out there. There was a very interesting plot with various subplots, interesting characters, friend, enemies, nemesies, love interests and many many other things to keep you glued on your monitor. It was part error flyn and part missions and events that actually took place. From a mission trying to steel the spruce goose,to a mission trying to save someone from a train moving to its doom,to fighting enemy zeppelins it was always incredible. And the story was given with many many different ways. You had newspaper and magazines clips in between missions and depending of your secondary objectives completed and your daredevil actions there were additional content .Then there was interesting radio broadcast similar to radio dramas of the 30's.There were also some nice cutscenes and a lot of chatter in game!

Artemis88 → 9/10/2011 11:41:42 PM #
