Update 1.008

Hello,
I'd like the quickly run down some of the key features of update 1.008. It will bring two new planes in the store (Fokker Dr.I and Sopwith Camel) and will add new summer textures to the game. It will also fix the AI of pilots who sometimes “got out of hand” with their marksmanship skills and it should increase game performance on some systems as well.

Strenuous testing allowed us to spot some bugs that we had previously missed and we were able to squash them. Another new feature is the 'Fly now' option that has been added to the main game menu. With this, you can play a rather simple “sampler” mission that I hope will be helpful to those of you who find 'Rise of Flight' a bit too difficult. We have placed several typical targets such as an echelon, a vehicle column, Russian roulette, a balloon, etc. along a single flight route. We believe it will be useful for training purposes, and while it's not quite as advanced as the quick mission generator that you are waiting for, it's a good first step in that direction and brings us that much closer to the real thing.

We will develop this mission with each update, adding new elements and content, until we will have finished the real 'quick mission generator', which will allow for much easier, and more dynamic, mission creation.

Realism lovers and sticklers will be glad to find a blip switch added to some airplanes along with all the accurate engine behaviors thereof. It uses the Shift+E keys by default but can also be remapped at your convenience. We have also finished the full version of the 'Rise of Flight Mission Editor manual'. It's well over a hundred pages long and we're hoping it helps out the RoF mission designing community.

Some thoughts:
Reading the forums, I've been struck by the amount of dissatisfaction due to the lack of information from us regarding the development process. This surprised me, as I always thought we should only announce something if we are sure of it. The development of Rise of Flight, and projects like, are not easy tasks. And there are many moments and situations that are hard to foresee. It only makes sense to let you know what's coming when we are sure we can deliver.

But as I read further, I found that many people are simply interested in HOW it is all done. That is something I can definitely fill you in on and I promise to update you more as we move forward on 1.009. Because it's going to be one interesting update.

We know some users are currently experiencing performance issues. Unfortunately, we have not been able to reproduce similar problems on our systems. It might be because of specific hardware configurations. We are looking into all possible solutions.

Lastly, as is our tradition, congratulations and present are in order for our 6000 (Kneedowndean) and 7000 (Smoke218) customers to our store. Thank you all for your interest for ROF project! As for us, back to work we go.

I don't know WHY some people are complaining about ROF but here is my comment about ROF..First of all I am 60 years old and a Vietnam Veteran in the United States Airforce, and a avid Flight Simmer...I look for realisim in a flight sim and I have flown "almost" every sim on the market!!! ROF is the best out there pretaining to the WWI time era!!...The sound, graphics, aircraft and all of the "eye candy" that is put into this flight sim is amazing/excellent!!!....I DON"T HAVE NOT ONE COMPLAINT ABOUT RISE OF FLIGHT!!!! Every UPDATE makes ROF a DREAM flight sim!!!!!!!!!!...Keep up the GOOD WORK!!!!

Appreciate your effort that you put in this sim.

I hope that 'Rise of Flight Mission Editor manual' will help the community a lot because I think it's one of the thing which slow down the development of the community. There are a lot of squads on IL2 and a lot of intersquad meeting because the mission editor is very intuitive and simple to use and it's very easy and quick to create a good mission.

With RoF, the coop mode allows squads to play but I did not noticed a lot of squads beeing created. The complex mission editor and the difficulty to host a server are, in my opinion, some of the explanations.

In my opinion ROF is the better fly sim at this time.  I know something about software development and this product is very, very great!

I hope you are there many years making more great this sim, if is it possible make it more amazing than now it is.

Thank you very much by your effort and your support.

I'm waiting since more than 20 days to get my flightstick back of repairstation
as soon as it returns to me, i will test the new planes (which are already bought Tong ) and do also hope of performanceboosts ;)

mitchismo → 10/28/2009 5:41:31 AM #

I just want to say that I think you've been doing a great job communicating the ongoing development of RoF via this very page. Just keep up the good work, and I'll keep buying every plane and talking about this game every time I get chatty. It's AMAZING. There isn't another flight experience like it.

Herodotus → 10/28/2009 6:20:17 AM #

Downloading the patch now, but I just had to comment on the excellent presentation of the announcement, and though you may have been surprised by many of our "work-in-progress" badgering, our hearts are in the right place. The fixes you have listed are exciting enough just by reading them, and if they do pan out you won't get me off my joystick forthe weekend. Now it's off to the Shop for my two new playmates.

"I just had to comment on the excellent presentation of the announcement"

They do seem to look a little nicer these days don't they? Almost like they had a native English speaker help out a little ;)

Seriously though, neoqb is committed to improving communication with the English speaking community, especially in these blog entries. Specifically, you can thank Loft and Lefty for this, as they are going out of their way towards those ends.

sallee → 10/28/2009 7:58:53 AM #

Thanks. I was a stutters sufferer, but that seems to have cleared up and I sincerely hope it has for others with the same problem.
Still a lot to explore, but the real addiction with this thing is the flying experience. I could fly the same mission twenty times without getting bored just because of the pure immersion.
Nice to see the Camel, but I must admit that I admire your style in releasing the Dolphin before the Camel!
All power to your elbow, chaps. You've created a real gem.

aviator66 → 10/28/2009 9:14:04 AM #

I just got done flying the two new beauties that you folks so lovingly made.  What can I say but, WOW!!! Awesome work! I can also now fly the slower planes against the faster ones.  They seem to engage and not always outrun you.  Thank you wonderful folks for working hard to make a truly enjoyable, virtual, experience!

1.008 makes it even better. You guys are maximum.
Still want to know what the blinking blue light on the compass indicates (on the simplified gauges)... and the tiny red light on the throttle gauge?

BuddyWoof → 10/28/2009 1:10:24 PM #

Thank You.

Jimko → 10/28/2009 3:18:23 PM #

1.008 has added a great deal to the reality of the flying experience and has made some important adjustments, as others have already commented.

But the icing on the cake for me is the Camel.  An excellent flight model and a superb visual model, all that I could have wanted in this historic fighter...my personal favourite!

Great work!  Many thanks!

"Downloading the patch now, but I just had to comment on the excellent presentation of the announcement."

Same thing here, downloading it. I fully agree, that was a pretty nice looking announcement. If only they could get the english so perfect ont he forum. I think I'm going to be buying the Triplane for my first plane.

senseispcc → 10/28/2009 8:26:10 PM #

I did yesterday receive the patch after one mishap
but now everything is ok and I did buy the two new planes, I have the impression that the camel is a little too easy to fly!
Thanks for this great games and the mission editor manual. Continue the great work.

Akmotte → 10/28/2009 11:11:56 PM #

This patch made the game very smooth for me and my game mate even on his old rig. Now we can fight properly.
The AI tweak is a great addition too, they still shoot good but nothing crazy like before.
I got my first 3 kills and 4 kills in a mission ! Not as good as Rene Fonck but i'm working on it ! xD

Keep up the good work guys, i'll soon buy my first planes now that the game runs fine.

OssiBoelcke → 10/29/2009 1:37:08 AM #

Great!!! Stuttering is gone for me now. What I am still missing though, is some kind of Joystick sensitivity setup function.

Smudge → 10/29/2009 3:24:38 AM #

Still not streightened out the elevator on the S.E.5a :-( but still generally a good patch Smile

ReligiousZealot → 10/29/2009 6:58:19 AM #

Keep up the good work guys! I appreciate your hard work and dedication to your customers to the point of ensuring that everyone is satisfied!

flappingbrown → 10/30/2009 9:26:12 AM #

yes that announcement was really well written.
my experience concerning our russian friends and languages is if they are of the higher education level ,then they speak a bunch of languages well.
its only the strange expressions in english that catch them out lol...and others.
as for the construction of the language & grammar they are really good , better than a lot of english people dare i say nowadays.
i corresponded with a young lady from omsk for some years when she was at uni ,and explaining the wierd english meaning of some english sayings helped her enormously!...as for grammar she was streets ahead of me ...i had forgotten so much.
yes this sim is getting there ,i hope the development can continue, i buy all the planes and hope others will also as this will after the initial game purchase enable this to happen.
yes a stick sensitivity facility will be nice ,but managing so far and still finding getting close enough to kill real hard.
it is a challenging sim if it wasnt we would get bored pretty quickly.
best regards
geoff
flapping-brown  and the others.

Olav → 10/30/2009 1:09:23 PM #

Thank you for making this game even better. If you  played Red Baron (long time ago), do you remember the pilot log book with all the kills, medal box? I would like to see that in this game with squadrons and, best aces more Smile But happy you made this great game for us.

Tvrdi → 10/30/2009 6:12:10 PM #

"It might be because of specific hardware configurations"

no it isnt....ROF was running fast and smooth before v1006..now it stutters and trackir is sluggish sometimes...

CFS_EAGLE_03/Tinytacohead → 11/2/2009 12:35:53 PM #

Thanks for another great update and 2 more gorgeous planes!  As always, I can't wait to see "what's next". Smile

BigQ → 11/2/2009 1:27:27 PM #

Great! just great! Thanks for planes and especially thanks for new land textures. Now ground looks much more realistic, like in the movies about WW1. Now i see that RoF is heading in right direction. Keep up the good work. Whenever you're going to release new plane, i'm going to buy it and support your efforts.

Cobber55 → 11/3/2009 3:21:14 PM #

Thanks for a great WWI flight sim. We have been waiting a long time for one to come a long and ROF looks like a winner. Keep up the good work.

I was concerned in the beginning about ROF but the team at Neoqb have come through. Thank you for all your hard work.

I have experienced one problem and I am hoping that someone can offer a solution. I am using a Satiek X51 joystick and CH Rudder Peddles. I am unable to get the game to recognize the rudder peddles and have had to unplug them and use the twist feature of the joystick.  I prefer to use the rudder peddles rather than the twist and I am hoping someone has a solution.  Thanks again Neoqb team!
