Beta test

Dear colleagues, friends and everybody!

We are starting close beta-testing of Rise of Flight, and want to officially offer you to take part in it.

Let me introduce myself, My name is Alex (aka TopGun), I will coordinate and administrate this beta-testing process from neoqb’s side. I am not a programmer and do not answer specific questions; I will coordinate the whole process and build communication between you and neoqb developers.
Personally from childhood I am fond of flying, I’ve got PPL and I am going to get CPL. In neoqb from June 2008. And I hope we can build good team together.

Your competent opinion will help to improve the game, make it even more user-friendly and interesting; we believe that together we can achieve really outstanding result.
We do not offer you simply play a game we offer you to work hard and make good thing. That is why we set rather strict regulations to those who wants to participate in beta-testing. Thank you in advance for understanding.

Terms and conditions:

1.    Participants can be only members of stable virtual society (squadrons, regiments – from here - squad).
2.    A squad is considered to be stable if it has website more than one year old
3.    From 1 squad we can approve 5 applications maximum (5 members max)
4.    You should introduce us your leader who will be the first person to communicate to us and coordinate your squad.

What you should do to participate:

1.    Send us an email to beta@neoqb.com, describing:
a.    History of your squad (1 page max)
b.    Names and surnames of the members with their emails (all emails should be real)

Deadline for applications is 06.04.2009.
After we receive your letter and primary accept it, we will send you an invitation.

Next step you should:
1.    Download 5 copies of Nondisclosure Agreement (NDA), print them and sign each copy (links, addresses and necessary info will be send in invitation)
2.    Scan the signed copies and send us by email.
3.    Go to your post office and send us hardcopy.
4.    To confirm this please scan post office receipt and send it to us by email.
Finally, the list of accepted squads will be post in our blog on 08.04.2009.

Please pay attention: if in a week time we do not receive scanned copy of the post receipt we will block the access to the game to all members of the squad.

Bug reporting and discussion will be via specialized forum, all further instructions and recommendations will be send to the squad leaders.

When registering in forum use your real photo as avatar, please take care about it from now, by the way, this is also a rule :)

Best regards, TopGun.

Hard rules ;) - but perfectly fair, looking at the risks and of course at the aim of RoF. Maybe I should quickly join a squad, LOL

Jasta 99 reporting for duty! I will do a move on our squadleader to sing us in for the Beta!

Viper → 3/31/2009 7:41:17 AM #

I have one question, if you belong diferents squads (not all squad fly all simulators), you can try to register for each one.?

Kotrenin → 3/31/2009 7:50:08 AM #

Crud, my squad has been together for 3 years but we never put up a website,
too busy flying XD

ZoomZoom → 3/31/2009 8:31:44 AM #

Would love to help you guys with this, unfortunately I belong to no squad due to time constraints. If you would however consider other than purely squad members, as I said, I'd  be glad to help, and have considerable knoweledge of the WWI aviation period as well as aircraft in general. Shoot me an email if its at all possible, and Good Luck with your progress towards completion! ;)

Salute,
the JaSta 99 come and help you.

2Viper: yes, why not, the key thing is that you will sign NDA and no problem if we have NDA signed by you from several squads. Also one person = one login to the game.
2Kotrenin and ZoomZoom: stay in touch, we'll think what we can do

heady89 → 3/31/2009 9:33:01 AM #

Would've loved to help out as well unfortunately im in the same boat as ZoomZoom, anyway if you'll need support from another dedicated simlation/ww1 fantast just give me a word I'll be glad to help.

I will be sending an email from 1.Pulk Lotniczy tomorrow Smile Those are great conditions, Gents. Thank you for such invitation.

Lepton → 3/31/2009 11:20:17 AM #

I certainly understand the benefits of having dedicated squads of folks beta testing the game, but my hope is that testing will be opened up to individuals who do not belong to squads.  There are any number of folks that have played combat flight sims for nearly a decade that have never belonged to any organized group of players.

church → 3/31/2009 11:20:21 AM #

I would love to help as well. I'm an Old RB3D player from way back.

chip5541 → 3/31/2009 12:19:59 PM #

Very reasonable request. Shame I had never joined a squadron but those are the breaks. If you ever find yourself short on testers I will always be here.

FlyXwire → 3/31/2009 12:58:01 PM #

I can understand the rules so as to test the MP side of RoF thoroughly.

Like a lot of guys, I'm left out too.

Just remember eventual participants, you've got big responsibiliites here!

WidowFactory → 3/31/2009 1:15:34 PM #

The KoA Knight of the Air Squadron (a german squadron which still sets tournaments for the good old Redbaron with modified flight models etc) will send our signup for this Beta Test tomorrow.

We have followed your blog with interest and would like to help beta-testing. Smile

RAF74 has been flying Sims for 11 years online, we started with the RED BARON II.

I have provided a number of cockpit and aircraft shots already for Viks, hoping our Squad can be able to become involved in the Beta Testing.

I've posted in the TX forums and will forward our collective interest if they desire to do so in the next 48 hours.

TX has been around for many years and has been the generous host of the TX-OC3 server which is close to coming back to life. We also have a former IL2 beta tester on our team.

Camel Charge → 3/31/2009 7:23:36 PM #

I'd love to have been able to test this on my computer to see if I can run it adequately or not. Unfortunately, I am not a "hardcore gamer" who has the time to join a team or squadron. I'm not sure if I have the desire either... I might be more of a lone wolf gamer ;). I do play some other video games from time to time, but not any flight sims besides RB3D because ONLY WORLD WAR ONE aviation interests me, and there are few good dedicated WWI sims out there. I can't claim to be an expert historian either. I am just enthusiastic about the subject, and about this particular game. Anyway, good luck to whoever CAN join the beta, and the rest of us can hope that NeoQB will open up the beta a bit more in the future. I'm actually beta testing Battlefield Heroes right now and they started off with a small beta and gradually added more and more people to it. I'm sure that ANY game of which multiplayer mode is an important aspect will eventually need to be tested with large numbers of people before release.

Maestro → 3/31/2009 7:54:36 PM #

Hi TopGun.It same with me as for ZoomZoom and Kotrenin.I don't have a squad, but I like to help.

TopGun → 4/1/2009 3:04:46 AM #

Hi, there! Thanx for your letters and posts, we are recieving them all, so nobody will be missed. We need some time to examine it, and today we will start sending NDA to your leaders.
About overall participants of beta: we thought about 100 people will be enough, but we'll see how it will go.

Feuerfalke → 4/1/2009 3:52:20 AM #

Roger that.

Good to see so much support from the community to help the testing. As posted before, I understand that squads are more helpful.
We loners will stay alert in case you need additional testers. ;)

I just hope you don't need us to compensate for testers lacking interest after the few test-runs, because most people consider a beta is more like a demo or a chance to play the game before others can.

In all of the closed betas I participated in, regardless of the genre and gametype, a large portion of the testers soon quit, after it was clear it's not just for fun and finding and documenting reproduceable bugs is sometimes a real pain in the a.., especially in multiplayer, where you have to coordinate tests via IRC/TS.

Use your chance!

The Royal Air Corp (RAC) is an old RedBaron3D squadron that has  been around 10 years.  Membership has dwindled but those that are left are excellent pilots with many years of experence that may be helpful.  However only a few of us have high end PCs.  What would be the minimum needed to be of use to U in testing?

TopGun → 4/1/2009 9:09:15 AM #

Guys, thank you for support, we are continue to recieve your applications, that is really inspirating to see so many people involved.
2RAC: Minimum 3 pilots in one squad is ok.
About PC configuration: there are no rules to it, and from one hand for us is useful to have feedback from different pс, but try to follow minimum requirements, cause too slow pc will do your playing uncomfortable.
About testing time: we will be thankful if you spend about 7-10 hours a week for testing process (or moreSmile).

Just check out main site:
Recommended (!) system requirements

Platform: PC
Operating system: Windows® XP (SP2)/Vista (SP1)
Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad 2.6 GHz
RAM: 3 Gb
Hard disk: 8 Gb
Videocard: 768 Mb, compatible with DirectX 9.0c, with support of Pixel Shaders v3
Audio: compatible with DirectX 9.0c
Access to the Internet: 256 Kb/s
Joystick: compatible with Direct X 9.0

There is a difference between recommended and minimum specs, though. ;)

8 Gb RAM
Video card 1024 Mb

Feuerfalke → 4/2/2009 12:46:56 AM #

As always, these recommendations are to be read as "or equivalent". It doesn't matter if it is an INTEL or AMD CPU, as long as their performance is on par.

Swampfox → 4/2/2009 5:19:14 AM #

Questions:
1) have you tried the game on an Intel-based Mac (example: 2gig processor and 3 gig ram) with a WindowsXP install (using the "bootcamp" second OS setup?
2) are you planning to accommodate a non-squaddie like Wolfgang Von Wellhausen, who created the most accurate Red Baron 3D flight model over a 4 year timeframe supported by extensive beta and actual war testing?  His FM was strong on tuning of all possible physics inputs.  Same for Wilhelm, who did the damage modeling - I don't think either hit the forums very much.

A good dual core (especially one that's got some NOS injected running 3.2 or higher) should easily be able to run it provided your other hardware is similar.

My rig is considered "entry level" these days but still cranks through just about everything and should run this sim fine as well.

I am building a PC specifically for this game it seems like somewhere I read that it doesn't support 64bit OS. Is this correct?

dutch → 4/2/2009 11:12:26 AM #

@Feuerfalke, I think you do not want to play this game in minium spec mode, this always means less details or shuttering, so what to test then. This game is made for the max in performance. I know some guys here who are running lower performance systems (know this from the outher forums) I think they can not test it or they will be disappointment.
Maybe the NeoQb could give the answer here for the beta testers PC and videocard .

Feuerfalke → 4/2/2009 1:14:10 PM #

@dutch:
NeoBQ organized this testing so thoroughly. Do you really think they don't clear this out with the testers via eMail once they volunteered?
They have a special forum for testing and from my knowledge probably for setting the game up and optimizing, too.

So what sense would it make to start a discussion about this in comments to a blog entry???

heady89 → 4/2/2009 1:44:22 PM #

Guys recommended settings are very high, just because you don't' meet them doesn't mean the game won't run in a great shape.

lol

WWSandMan → 4/2/2009 9:35:54 PM #

Same, WW's have received the welcome letter with NDA links, but the links are inactive. Please advise.

cptcartman → 4/2/2009 9:55:36 PM #

Sounds a bit elitist to just have people from squadron or societies. The only upside possibly is these are people that most likely will spend the most amount of time playing.

Feuerfalke → 4/2/2009 11:55:47 PM #

No cartman, the upside is, that they can hunt bugs in teams, are trained in formation flying and formation tactics as well as they are trained to fly online, know how to set up servers and get around network problems. They can more easily reproduce dogfight-situations and problems resulting from it.
They also are responsible for each other as a group, enhancing that NDA-agreement will be met.

Beebop → 4/3/2009 12:54:40 AM #

I'd very much like to take part in the Beta testing.  I've been looking forward to this sim for quite a while.  I am the CO of the HellHounds and will be sending an e-mail with names of Squadron members that wish to participate this weekend.

dutch → 4/3/2009 1:18:32 AM #

@Feuerfalke, First point I do read every Blog here, from the start on.
I do not see the minium req anymore why???, has this something to do with Btesting???
next; Because I know some guys are entering the beta testphase without the right system. They are so enthousiastically about RoF they can not ressist this. From my point it was only a warning, sorry if my messages made you boiled!!.

Man I wish I could use my business 4core system at home for Btesting, I need only to exchange the Vcard, but it is forbidden.

Feuerfalke → 4/3/2009 1:38:57 AM #

You didn't make me boil. I just pointed out, that this is part of the organization of the closed beta-test, at least those tests I participated in, which were quite a few.
But as you stated, there are no minimum requirements available for the latest build, so it's also possible reports from testers with low-end-machines is used to determine those.

So, again, just pointing out, that they know what they are doing.

I know the question has been asked, and perhaps the quote above is the answer, but are there minimum specifications? I haven't found them anywhere on the site.

WWBrian → 4/3/2009 4:55:31 PM #

@Viper,

As posted by TopGun two posts above you, they're collecting until Monday. So that answers your first question. Since they want a scan of the reciept by monday also, they'll know you met the deadline.

It will probably take (on average) 8-10 working days for USPS service to deliver from US to Moscow. I'm unsure of other countries. But Neoqb will have your reciept saying you sent it before the deadline no matter what date the actual hard paper copy arrives. So that should answer your second question as well.

I suspect they want reciepts from the postal service so they can move forward with this without having to wait for every hard copy to show up at the office. Kudos to them for that proceedure!

TX-EcoDragon → 4/3/2009 5:42:14 PM #

"Please pay attention: if in a week time we do not receive scanned copy of the post receipt we will block the access to the game to all members. . ."

That seems to imply we have a week after the deadline for the scans, is it correct that it's the 11th of April for the scans? My post office will not be open until Monday.

I've sent the NDA scans for The Tngmere Pilots as a .zip and with "Mediafire". The .zip was too big to do it by e-mail.
Is this a problem?

What a wonderful way to get the ball rolling. I have a question: I currently run a fan sight for iRacing. We recently switched over from JCRacing.net to ImpoundRacing.com. JCRacing was started in July of 2007, so technically we've been up for almost 2 years. I can add an additional Rise of Flight Category to our site, or possibly have another forum under ImpoundRacing.com. Would this be acceptable?

TopGun → 4/6/2009 1:18:59 AM #

Good morning Guys, it 11-00 AM here in Moscow and
we have finished collecting your applications. Thank you for your activity, we were happy to recieve your applications from various places, but due to the limitations of total number of participants we cant accept everybody at this moment. What is really amazing is the understanding that we all have something to share with each other, we are all in the same sky.
I will inform you about final list of participating squads on Wednesday. Thanks.

I want to upgrade my PC to an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2Ghz or 6000+ 3.1Ghz.
Is this the right CPU for playing RoF or is this game then only to play at low settings. See not any AMD recommended spec's here.

j-ckiller32 → 4/14/2009 5:28:17 PM #

hello im j-ckiller32 and I want to no how to join a squad. I dont really understad why we have to join a squad to get your demo please awnser my question.

heady89 → 4/15/2009 12:13:53 AM #

j-ckiller32, it's not a demo it's a beta and the requirements are necessary to get serious people involved, not just people who personally wanna try the game but also people that can give constant and concrete feedback to the developers regarding the game.

You're just gonna have to wait for an official demo.

Feuerfalke → 4/15/2009 12:15:35 AM #

j-ckiller32, in case you made a joke:
It's a really bad one.

In case you are not making a joke:

A DEMO...
is a version of the game released to the public to try out the game before buying it. You don't have to be in a squad to get to play the DEMO!

A BETA-TEST-VERSION...
is an early release to a selected crew to find bugs and flaws in the game, so they can be fixed BEFORE the DEMO or the FINAL RELEASE. This is what they doing and this is limited to squads for various reasons.

dutch → 4/15/2009 12:43:11 PM #

Hi beta testers using a dual core CPU Intel or AMD. Could you share your experience in performance. Because I do not know if my upgrade (AMD Athlon64 X2 6400+ 3.2Ghz)will bring any advance for playing RoF or is it just a waste of $$$$ and should I go for a new Mobo/QuadCPU. It will be nice if you could share me you dualcore model & Ghz and is the performance sufficient for getting the max grahpic performance.

TX-EcoDragon → 4/15/2009 1:19:51 PM #

Dutch, VikS has posted some information at SimHQ along with some hints at what would be the best hardware to have: simhq.com/.../1.html

I don't think I've seen him say what it would take to run maximum quality. He states that in their tests an Intel Core2 Quadcore CPU at 2.66GHz was 30-40% faster than a dualcore 2.66 Core2Duo.

Of course most QuadCore cpus are less able to reach the high overclock frequencies of a dual core until you look at the higher end Q9550 or Q9650s which can hit 4.0-4.4 GHz similar to an E8400/E8500.

Feuerfalke → 4/15/2009 3:24:26 PM #

dutch, the NDA prohibits testers to release any information about the game, the beta and other internal stuff.

Until official news have been released, check the forums or information available, like TX-EcoDragon summing up the statements.

http://www.nd.ru/news/957707/
...is the NEWS-site for the publisher. That is where you find the official news beyond personal statements listed in a dev-blog.

spybaz → 7/28/2009 7:22:08 PM #

Can someone please tell me where to download the patch? I am pulling my hair out here! I go to riseofflight.com/.../Patch-1004.aspx

I click the link that says "Patch 1.004", which basically opens a duplicate page - no download options given. I have read the whole page. Nowhere does it say where to get the patch. I have googled it - nothing.

(I am still waiting to play this sim that I purchased weeks ago, because the Triplehead2Go compatible sales pitch I fell for wasn't exactly true. A little bird tells me that this patch has rectified the FOV issues to some degree)

Thanks!
