Training campaign

In the course of «Rise of Flight» development we pursued the idea of making the project interesting not only for admirers of this genre, but also we wanted to provide good experience for the amateur users. Players that still have some troubles with aircraft control devices, but with the knowledge in general aviation, will be provided with various elements of facilitation. For example, automatic fuel mixture mode and automatic aircraft stabilization mode, which will help with mastering skills in difficult and complex missions included in our project. We decided to include these modes for beginners rather than simplify most of mathematical models.

We also have some people at our office who honestly have no idea how to fly in the combat aircraft. They just look at the screen and declare immediately that they want to learn how to fly too. How can we help them? Sometimes different project developers say something like «you should spend more time studying and reading in your childhood, so you don't have any questions». Such approach to the problem solution is not our method, therefore we included «training campaigns». Basic flight elements and techniques will be shown and explained in training missions.

In order to implement the idea of training campaigns we have included some additional capabilities like animated characters. We wanted to make some progress in this genre. Our game will definitely look different with all these features compare to other flight sims. After the technical problems that we have successfully solved another question arised, «who can be trusted enough from the aces, and who can actually play the role of a «baby sitter». After some thoughts we decided to pick on good old Eddie Rickenbacker. In his real life he spent time training new comers and strengthening «the young wings», thus he will be also irreplaceable in our virtual world.

In a today's promotional movie our current progress on this «not always grateful path» is presented, namely - the first mission from «Training campaign» from the project «Rise of Flight».

Nice movie! How about fuel mixture? Smile And i can't help thinking about a dual-controlled trainer aicraft, with the AI whispering in your ear Smile

well done!
please again movies thanks

Bravo!  Sounds just like Eddie Rickenbacker too.  This is very cool, and the animation looks awesome!

Nice movie!
It make me remmember the old game for Commodore Amiga "Wings".
I'm waiting for the release date guys!
I want to put my hands in this sim.

AnotherSoulSaved → 11/27/2008 12:22:46 PM #

Will there be "interactive" flyable training missions? I mean missions like "fly through these rings" or "shoot 3 balloons in 30 seconds". IMO it is a shame that few flight simulators include good training missions where the player actually gets some kind of feedback from the game about his performance.

VikS → 11/27/2008 12:28:16 PM #

Yes it will. This clip - is an intro for such training mission.

FranksValli → 11/27/2008 12:47:12 PM #

Awesome!  I love that you're reaching out to new pilots like this.  Everything looking good as always.  I hope to be playing this for years and years to come Smile

It just keeps getting better. Thanks to all the guys at RoF. You're creating a masterpiece! I cannot wait to fly. Smile

Nice video time.I did like it.

SV-001/R → 11/27/2008 2:03:58 PM #

But, can we watch training movies with captions? Some non-Western simulation users who aren't skilled in listening English may feel difficult to understand speeches. I think if they have English captions, it is more easier to understand it.

SV-001/R → 11/27/2008 2:31:04 PM #

Of course, Best choice is to make 'subtitles' in other languages rather than to make captions in English. But, translating all speeches in many other languages is very difficult. Thus, how about to make subtitles in training movies can be easily added and modified by users? If 'modding subtitles' support 2-byte languages, all users over the world can make subtitles in their languages freely and it can rescue many simulation beginers using non-western languages.

BuddyWoof → 11/27/2008 3:49:56 PM #

Go Eddie Go!

VikS → 11/27/2008 4:39:35 PM #

As for subtitles on different languages - no problems here. We managed to split localisation files from mission subtitles and any other mission, so if you need to add your language - you just need to translate localisation file and put it in missions folder together with mission file - no need to edit mission byitself.

Thank you for answering Viks. It's very awesome news for me. I'm looking forward to playing this simulation in Hangeul(한글; Korean Characters). Also, seeing Katakana, Hiragana, Hanzi (and in many asian languages) in flight simulation will be very interesting.

Several people have mention September 2009 as the release date in their comments. Where do they get this information from. I understood and early 2009 release was imminent?
Is their another forum where things like this are discussed?

migl.sant → 11/28/2008 10:17:18 PM #

The idea of training campaigns is good.
But yesterday after seeing the video, I had thinking about it all day. I have one question, Gennadich team: Why???
WWI, took place primarily in Europe from 1914 to 1918, only in 1917, 19th months to the end of the war, the EUA joined the war. (I know you know this)
Why we have an American flag and a poster on back door of “Uncle Sam's call”? We have a man giving lessons of flight (that’s ok) but there’s no mention to any European country in that office. I presume that man is American as well. Why you don’t put a man talking in English but with French pronounce or a few European country flag in that office? It will be more realistic, don’t you think?
I’m Portuguese and if I was American I will think like I think at this moment. We (Europeans) learn to fly here in Europe not in USA, not with Americans. I don’t want to hurt somebody's feelings but this is my opinion.
Please join one or two more European flags in that wall office or change it! Don’t mess all your GOOD WORK with this abnormal error please! This movie lessons can enter in game only in April 1917 not before.
Sorry for this but I (we) want a realistic and historical sim not a vulgar game.
Hope you have this critic in consideration. And correct me if I’m wrong.
And sorry for my bad basic english.

migl.sant → 11/28/2008 10:54:33 PM #

Ok. SORRY!!! Smile (after all this time)Only now i read the game info. ..."The game world is the world of the military Europe of 1917—1918"... I thought the game starts in the year 1914. I don't have pardon! Please accept my apologies. I don't know where i found that information when the game calls Knights of the sky. I have shame.
Sorry again.

FlyXwire → 11/28/2008 11:23:20 PM #

migl.sant, not to worry.  Eddie Rickenbacker also served at the Issoudun Training Center in France, before going to the US 94th Aero Squadron, and then eventually rising to command that squadron as a Captain.  This is all European history, but with its American flare.  There will most likely be many more campaigns in the future for Rise Of Flight to cover.  The period is rich with acclaim for all the air arms that fought in the war, and it is hoped that much of this history will be detailed in Rise Of Flight and into the future.  There always has to be a beginning to any project, but this sim is meant to grow, and with its excellence, and our support, we will all grow together too.

9N/209RAF → 11/29/2008 4:42:07 AM #

The video actually made me look forward to flying a SPAD (and that takes some doing!).

Question (since apparently the Nieuport 28 will be in the initial release) : Will we have to worry about the N28's tendency to lose fabric from the upper wing in a steep dive? That would really be realism!

migl.sant → 11/29/2008 10:14:59 AM #

FlyXwire, I'm very grateful for your explanation! Thanks to understand my concerned. I have no doubt this will be a great Sim.

dutch → 11/29/2008 10:19:10 AM #

Nice video, but I prefere the planes more then this gadget. Whats happening to the Gennadich airplanes??? I miss the Gennadich Dr1 in this game, it is, I think the most populair WW1 airplane for starting WW1 gamers.

Do not make the same mistake as First Eagles did, release few planes and a bad campaing mode. One strong point from RB was the realistic campaing mode based on history (it sucks you into the game)and The RBgame life was extende by the use of onofficial paths to improve the game further.

About the few planes remark: why not put in planes that are more a less the same. For example the Spad XIII, SpadXII, SpadXIV and the SpadXI. Fokker Dr1, DVI, DVII, EV/DVIII, or why not a C1? The same to the Albatros family, they all look the same and you need only some small redrawing in 3Dmax, it will save you the $$$$$$.

I'm not negative about this game (OFF3 and RoF are on my buyinglist), but more afraid of the lack of succes it will get, by not looking to the marketing history of WW1 games that had succes and the ones the have failed.

FlyXwire → 11/29/2008 11:49:37 AM #

Migl.sant, I saw your artwork for Jasta Klugerman over on the Aerodrome forum that Willi is organizing, and it's very nice!  Now to ROF, as we know, the sim has been in development for over three years now.  However, we're really just seeing the final product coming together through this ROF blog media now.  The one advantage that this WWI project has over all others that have come before it, is that the designers want to stay engaged in its further expansion!  Besides presenting an engaging, full-fidelity WWI game offering, this sim can officially grow with its success.  We all should get used to finding out new things and surprises about this sim, because that's going to be part of the future ROF experience!

migl.sant → 11/30/2008 2:49:14 PM #

Thanks again FlyXwire. You exclarify many doubts with your comments in this forum.
i'm glad that you liked my artwork.

Reflected → 11/30/2008 5:09:36 PM #

What? According to Dutch, there will be no Dr1? I think that would be a big mistake! I really love America, but I'm not sure I would buy a "here come the american heros saving the world"- game. With RoF I expect something like a time machine, both for British, US, French, or German sides. I think this is what can make this game a legend. My 2 cents. Keep up the good work!

This is interesting, but I don't see the point in having a US teacher, as most US pilots (starting with Rickenbacker) were trained by French pilots or english.

Maestro → 12/2/2008 6:53:50 AM #

Well now the French and English Teachers killed and we have Rickenbacker too teach us.hehehe Well he got okey from the war.

As you know gentleman French and English air tactics was differences. American contract them all in one.

Womenefly2 → 12/4/2008 11:00:10 AM #

I love the training video, what an awesome addition. Great job on Eddie too!

Q: Will there be one if you are flying for a Jasta, like maybe Ernst Udet replacing Eddie? Also, will there be more advanced training videos for aerial combat tactics? Maybe one showing the differences between aerial combat tactics depending on which squadron/side one flew with.

LOFT → 12/4/2008 12:56:33 PM #

Dear friends. I'm asking you to refrain from any disputes. We are Russian developers, this game is about history of Europe with American ace as a main character. Can't you see that there is no politics in the world of history for us? And since we are making a great progress with our game let us not paint everything in black and white now.  We are not able to say what was wrong and what was right, it just happened to be our history, mine and yours. In this project we are treating our history with passion, please believe me when I say there will be no «mistakes» that you have mentioned. For us Eddie is not just your ordinary ace, he was a great man and he had some great personality, he fought during the WWI. We were able to collect all necessary information about his life. On the first stages, American community were the first that truly believed in our project, we received some really valuable information from their side. If each and every country, participated in the WWI, provide us with the same amount of information we will gladly present it in our project, including the one and only Russian combat aircraft Smile So please guys free your mind and let us build together our community without any politics. Remember politics is only for the living.

migl.sant → 12/4/2008 4:16:56 PM #

Thanks, LOFT.
After this, I don't have anymore questions.
I'm greatfull with your work and I want to put my hands on it. I'm waiting for the release date. But until then put a video with some dog fight! Smile

Thunderbolt56 → 12/5/2008 12:00:25 PM #

Good post Luft, and thanks for the clarification. I am one of those guys who likes all aspects of militarty aviation history and didn't quite understand the thought process behind beginning at the end so-to-speak. Your explanations make sense and reassurances that there will be additional content added at a later date to include some early-war stuff only make it better. I'm also interested in the Kaiser's side of the fence regarding training...will there be a German equivalent to the Allied "Eddie"?

Ian Guerrero → 12/5/2008 10:15:26 PM #

It is not important who is or who represent the 3D model, the important thing is that the concepts are well explained and easy to understand, but do not know or understand the language in which it is. Again, CONGRATULATIONS on the job!

dutch → 12/6/2008 5:56:55 PM #

Yep Thunderbolt why not: for Germany Boelcke, for the UK Mannock, for Belgium Coppens etc. Just copy and paste the face in Autodesk 3Dmax. Translations in a native dialect looks to me more a problem.

Niklapolice → 12/10/2008 5:34:18 PM #

People please, easy. There have not been a real good WW1 flight sim since the very crappy RB3D, that was, by lack of any others, the best one at time. It was like 1O years ago, maybe more. By what i have seen it looks like this ROF game will have even more impact on WW1 games than IL2 had on WW2.
Asking for things like ": for Germany Boelcke, for the UK Mannock, for Belgium Coppens etc." is quite ungrate and unrealistic, plus the fact that will make release date longer.
Let's not ask for useless and progress slowing features when the more important things look to be in development: Realistic flights model, omg graphism(youtube vid), and further after game release development, support and add-ons, just like strong community game success(First eagles). (please don't forget AI)

What the hek is the importance of face skin of training instructor, that maybe youll see 2min in the whole game, compared to the other OMG features that this game looks to have?

What is the importance of game having only two flyable aircraft, or allied being american only, when we know it will be increased in further developments or expansions?
Just in case of i precise i am french Smile

I prefer playing it now with few aircraft than waiting a year with full aircraft.

To devs: Great work and go on. I just can't wait for this game to be released.

dutch → 12/10/2008 7:07:34 PM #

Hey Nicklapolice I see you are replying on my last comment. It was only a joke, read my outher comment. I think we have the same opinion for all that gimmicks in the game!

And now the history, 10 years ago I went to the shop for buying RB1, then RB2 and upgraded to RB3d, got Flying Corp Gold, Dawn off Aces and Aerial Combat Manoeuvres. At that time my son, WWI fly sims was hot, I think there where even more good WW1 sims then WW2 flysims. Now its very poor, not 10 years ago.
But now its time for a next fase in the WW1 flysim, time for RoF and OFF3, man I can not wait!!!! Please take a notice I'm not negative about this game and OFF3. I hope they will have a real strong community more like IL-2 now. Because lets be fair, busy community for FE, online flying??? forums???? oke there is one the combatace forum.

ps what do mean by crappy RB, ever did some HASP, ROTJ or the WFP move?

UFO → 12/12/2008 1:10:22 AM #

Having been addicted to RB2 long ago and dreaming for years of a new updated WWI flying game, you can't imagine the excitement generated in my old heart when my son sent me a link today so I could access this site.  To this 71 year old kid, Rise to Flight sounds like a dream coming true! I can hardly wait for the release.  For me this is a must have game!  Thank you!

dutch → 12/12/2008 5:29:17 PM #

Hi UFO, if you are an WW1 fly fan, check  the OFF3 website at: www.OverFlandersFields.com. Ok its based on the old CFS3 engine, so the looks are not so state off the art as RoF. But it has outher nice features.

UFO → 12/17/2008 11:25:50 PM #

Dutch. Let's precise what i meant.

First i would like to sorry for text wall that is coming. I hope you ll read anyway ;)

Yea RB3D was quite crappy if you look at it neutraly, and not like a plane game fan that i was at that time, time in which a pixel with wings was beautiful to my eyes: for playing solo, first graphical issues even with 3DFX, then the gun and damage model was a joke. What is that comes from my gun anyway? Shotgun shells? Ai bugs and unkillable planes, less sometimes they go down and crash without particular reason, and you are credited the victory. Once i was credited 7 plane kills during a mission , and it was like i mnot even sure of having shot them , maybe two or three bullets, then flown base, and on the way those planes felt and crashed to the ground without reason, several minuts after fight was off.
Another to the contrary i shot my whole 1000 bullets to a straight flying breguet from close range, and it didn't went down. When we know rené fonck killed 6 planes with 56 bullets during WW1, by two times, it makes the game a little abusive.

The autopilot that crashes you on mountains. The bombing missions in which the bombers don't bomb and stay above objective till they gad no fuel, and the lacking of "alt-n" feature, if you know thirdwire then you know what i mean, and the fact at that time internet was not that spread, what makes patches and mods difficult to get so "out of box" quality was primordial, makes the game far from perfect and immersing, even if i played to it like a crasy.

Though, fight and souns were particularly realistic to my view, im thinking about "cracking" wings sounds and wings sounds, that made combat particularly wonderful.

Nearly at the same time, another game, "european air war" was released, and even today it still the most immersive game that i know, much more than IL2 and it's bad solo experience, due to AI lack not corrected by devs(and never will be), in spite of players requests, that make solo play quickly annoying.
IL2 strength is that it's i think the most realistic behaviour and flight model that could be achieved in a game, also multiplayer in IL2 is extremely fun.

Back to subject at that time i had RB and EAW, and of the two there is an incredible difference of quality "out of the box", RB looked like a beta game compared to European air war, both with 3DFX. That's maybe why im a little severe talking about RB3D.

Still Red baron the old is one of the game i have most played ever, and by the time it came out there was nothing to compare with.

No i never tried those mods you are talking about, by the time i had internet, there were better games than RB3D, lets take dawn of aces as an example.

Back to first eagles.I don't know if You are aware , well i guess you don't from what you are saying, than Thirdwire games have a WAY much bigger community than ANY other plane game (well today wise). It comes from the TK games structure, totally open and adapted to modding, patches and updates coming nearly each month to update graphics, planes and AI(the most clever AI i have seen so far is from that game), and TK listening to players for game enhancement, little thing that maddox dev have no clue about. Basically, if you want to have 300 different planes in your thirdwire game, from bristol WW1 monoplane to YF22 5th generation plane, there is no problem at all. Online community have created tons of planes you can add to it, and sincerely, often modders planes and cockpits are even better and more realistc than a game maker work. They are often working by teams, one dude for FM, one for skins,  one for sounds etc.. and other modders take past work to improve it even more. If you DL a plane of october 2008, its not impossible to see 20 or 30 people have worked on it, totally.
Planes are available for all countries that historically own those planes, so if you want to fly in an indian DH Vampire, or a french fokker DR1, or a spainish mirage, you can. Its totally flexible.

Well maybe instead of trying to convince you, i should show some figures:
Combatace forum

IL2 downloads: 130 thousands
Lock on: 230 thousands
Thirdwire games: 2 millions

IL2 files : 400
Lock on: 400
Thirdwire: 4200

There is no comparison. Yes it's right, those games have much less forums than IL2, well combatace is maybe the only one with some others (Another is Check-six). Yes its right ,it's not that much played onnline, that's true, and anyway IL2 would be better for online multiplayer.  But they have wayyy more active community and community work than any  other game, even if they lack of BIg money publicers , to the contrary of other fly games.

This comes also maybe because TK, the head designer of those games, listen to players submissions, answer to your questions naturally, don't think he's god, and instead of turning a game into making more profit, he turns it into making more beloved by its community. Something like this is pretty rare nowadays in game industry.

As a matter of fact Thirdwire community is very strongly attached to those games, and very often you will see em give thanks to TK for what ha has done until now, community-to-developper strentgh of that kind is not very common nowadays, neither.

I know that it ll not be that much for rise of flight, as a fact game structures have nothing to see, but developpers of RoF look to be listenning to players, and that is a very good thing, to achieve the perfect game, and not screw  the whole game up because of AI bashing, like IL2 has been.

Thx for readin anyway.
