Damage model screenshots
Greetings!
My dear friends, while Albert is too busy with exhibition preparations, I will accept the honour to inform you about all weekly updates (this time it’s Friday). As you probably know I have some debts and I would like to give it back to the audience.
“Better to see once than to hear twice” – this is our claim I would only correct a bit – better to feel it! So, without any delay, we upload some screenshots you waited for. This is an additional material for the damage model article. (Thanks to Michael, lead artist, who spent his time on dropping planes with different angles).
And if you ask me what I feel looking at the damaged construction of the greatest achievement of Human - Aeroplane, I would tell you: "I can't stand looking at it... I really want to PLAY it!"

COOL! I've always seen that airplanes 'explode' when they fall down in many simulations. I thought curious that all planes that falled would explode and thought sometimes they could be just folded and crushed instead of blowing up. That's what I want until now.

Good pics, love the Albatros in this game!
Aircraft in WW1 would normaly catch fire in mid-air then they start to spiral down (obviously). And the crash would not be as spectacular as WW2 aircraft crashes. They would either crash and crumble or collapse,or a mild explosion, sending pieces into the air.

Finally, something that looks like a real forced-landing. The gear-less Albatros resting in the grass looks so much like Bruno Stachel's downed Pfalz D.III from the movie The Blue Max. Nice to see how the ground effects and the damage effects all work together to create that greater degree of immersion. Nice work guys, and thanks for the update too!

The damage models are quite excellent! The physical damage to the aircraft seems correct and realistic. The bottom wing of the Albatros droppy from diconnection from its strut, wooden frame exposed from loss of fabric, separated or crooked struts from damage, the list goes on!I would love to see pics of the Albatros flying, that would be lovely!

Excellent pictures. The second in particular is very evocative. It is very easy to forget that I'm looking at something completely generated on a pc. Amazing!
Thanks for the update. I'm really looking forward to playing it!

You guys are doing some amazing work... Your damage modeling makes the whole thing seem much more visceral. In most games, it feels like I'm just knocking off hit points from parts until they flutter off, but in these shots, I can almost feel the tearing and crunching.

For some of us WW1 aviation fans,we wished that we had flown during The Great War,but we missed our calling and was born too late. Some would buy or build replicas of WW1 aircraft, but for many, couldn't afford it.This game would be a quick and cheaper way to "live" through it.Fight on,Fly on!

Stop teasing us, please can we play too ?
Great work, nice attention to detail.

Been waiting a Looong time for this sim, it looks like its going to be fantastic. Could RB3d finally be going to be knocked off its perch as the best WW1 sim ever?

Would it be cool if the game has realistic joystick controls of having the rotary engined aircraft gets quirky and goes on its own when you let go of the joystick! It happened on DR1s,you had to have both hands on the joystick or else it went off, same with helicopters.

Well, its time to move on from RB3D,sadly.But ROF would provide me hours of fun.I believe this game will have quite a thick manual,in a good way.Could you include a full scale map with the box? That would be so cool if you did!
F_IV → 11/2/2008 8:07:08 AM
#
Perhaps not a full scale map. That would require thousands and thousands of trees to provide the paper. Huge box too, come to think of it...
Willi Von Klugerman → 11/2/2008 9:24:31 PM
#
Not individual trees for the paper map, just forests or woods.

Holy Molly! This is incredible! It's not very nice to tease us with such wonderful shots. I can't wait to play this game. Any approximate release date please?

Since were on the subject of damage models, will the wires get shot off from their supports in the game?

Things I'd like to see/hear:
1.How about a low fly-over showing the transition from rear areas to no-man's land.
2. Muzzle flash
3. Actual in-game engine sounds.

I love emergency lands. Of course im talking about the enemy. When i damage their controls or wings or engine and they try to land with tears in their eyes ;) and when they touch the ground they crash the plane. muaahahahaha. i'm terrible!

I have a question on the ROF Damage Model (DM) in the videos. It seems the one were the D.vII crashes, the physics of the DM has it bouncing around like its very light, no real mass. Most Real Life crash photos I have seen shows when a plane like this crashes, its pretty much "crunches" itself into the ground, for lack of a better descriptive.
The impact needs to be made more "solid" with the ground, not like it was on the moon with 1/6th the gravity, floating back in the air and down again. The engine alone weights a hefty 600 plus lbs.
Maybe this is not the finale DM's? Maybe?
Just a observation.
Dart → 12/5/2008 3:03:38 AM

Yep, that's how my plane will probably look after I land.
