Project news from producer

First of all, I want to introduce myself: at office everybody called me Albert, at forums - more often Loft. Choose that is more convenient to you. In general, I want to tell that the system of forums with niсknames is the legalised schizophrenia. Rumor is that in our century it is not a disease but rather a step of evolution: in fact it is simply impossible to have one name in the 2-3-modern worlds. It would be funny if you could write every name you want in the passport at the customs when you enter any country in a world. In relation to the real world - blessed utopia, in relation to the virtual world – just usual thing and widespread granted. The situation is compounded by the world plot that name in every environment (the address) must be unique. I mean, if someone before you comes to the country and called as Men, you can’t select the same name, and customs system offers you the unpleasant, but anonymous options Men10, Men1979.

Meeting person with such name at the provincial station of a district local net, keep in mind: he is passing or briefly comes to relatives. Autochthons have a «unique» names (for example, Super Men) - they «bought a plot here» back to the «pre-alfa test» (before the big bang in terms of cosmology). But even in this chaos is already emerging «old» tradition, which is important, not brought from outside, but born by the societies, its own rules. As example - the name of admin. Admin is ubiquitous, it is  Adam in online universes, from him and the first curve «design», and stupid Images interface additions to the post were born, in general – everything in bound of the local network name.

On large portals it is a post which is elected or appointed from the real world, on small - the extreme form of a monarchy. Even on network «cemeteries», resources that have not been updated for years, can be found admin in lunar night. In general, process of colonization of a network is very interesting, ambiguous, branching, but in this process the real world is always guessed. To tell-the-truth I can’t tell what on what does influence nowadays.

I will return to subject. In project ROF I participate in a role of the producer. In simply speaking, «I keep the big seal» and in case of creative disputes I decide, who is right from opponents. Therefore I quite fairly can be abused, if the project disappoints you, and to praise – if it will be pleasant.

Here is a proportion I "want" in relation to I "can" as 2 to 1, in which I exist. My "want" is based on imagination and constant studying of all connected with computer games, and my "can" - on work of a great number of companions. And as a whole my global task as a producer is parity reduction to ideal 2 to 2. Well or, if it won’t turn out, to neutral and to the most widespread 1 to 1.

Now I am introduced and it will be already civil to get onto the news of project.

The most good news is the fact of the ending of work on a graphic part of the project. It seems to me that this work turned out  quite a whole and, hopefully, interesting. From this point on efforts of artists in it will already add last elements. On the artistic point of view f a small refinement of clouds, edit lighting, depending on time of day, a correction of some textures of objects to the terms of HDR lighting are waiting for us. Work on game objects is continued, a model of damage to buildings is setting up, texture rail and ground transportation, models and cockpit are drawing. Refactoring of FX effects is going, thanks to the efforts of programmers, artists were able to make them more interesting. . Much work is being done on the network game. There has already begun testing, but errors are still a lot and to say something specific is early. Import GUI in the project is begun, work on the generator of missions for "the Open-cast mine" mode is going at the full speed, is trained in AI. There is adjustment setting flight and technical characteristics of planes. All these elements are very interesting and we will necessarily tell about them in detail in following posts.

In a today's post I will separately stop on a graphic element "Grass". This subject is much not unequivocal and always causes disputes. On the one hand, «Why grass in the aviation game, where the more time we spend at a height at which it is not visible is needed?» With another - «game about aviation - this is not the only game about airplanes, how realistic it was not modeled himself aircraft, the small details of peace, the environment, make us believe what is happening». I hold the second opinion. And the programmers always severely concerning any graphic ideas because of their gluttony in FPS, have treated this element favorably enough. The implementation was entrusted to Andrei Kiselev. In the view of the entire team, he coped with the task very well. Now the objects will not stand in the «table», and the appearance of an aircraft or a tank on the Earth's surface has become even more persuasive. Successful implementation of this element has enabled us to maintain productivity, winning in Entertainment. Now everything is in the hands of artists who have a task t of improving the appearance of grass. In the future we plan to «cut» in the grass «paths» and «roads» and may be use different types of herbs to surfaces.

That’s all. Thanks to everybody very much for your interest in the project. Keep watching for the project, we won’t leave you without information.

LOFT,

Will there be the possibility/option to see the grass moving with the prop wash?

David / FranksValli → 14.10.2008 19:32:05 #

Nice!  I love the grass, but make sure to add the ability to turn it off.  People love to have that little fine-grained control Smile

BadAim → 14.10.2008 22:19:07 #

Thanks for the news my scizophrenic friend, I wish you well with the parity battle, it's probably the hardest part of any job, that and finding a point to declare it "finished". I love the grass, that shot of the Spad is now my wallpaper: Dead Sexy.

About the release date...

I know we probably sound like a bunch of nags when it comes to the release date, however, many of us currently don't have a computer that can handle this game.  It would greatly aid me (and others) if I had a rough estimate for the release so that I can plan a computer upgrade accordingly...  (if I can buy the parts over time, or will will have I have to get something together much sooner)

So....   ;)

A) this year?
B) the first half of next year?
C) the second half of next year?
D) longer?

WOW!!When I saw the last image with he Spad and the car,I almost forgot that I was looking at a screenshot of a game!!

Willi Von Klugerman → 15.10.2008 23:36:51 #

I also forgot to mention, how is the hand signals, the flare pistols, snow, and storms going to be simulated. And I DEMAND a screenshot of the aircraft flying in a sunset and other images that have sunsets!! (how about one of an aerodrome during a sunset with the aircraft on the ground)

LOFT → 16.10.2008 6:28:19 #

1) Yes, we are preparing full missions’editor for the release. It will be available soon, that’s all I can say by now 2) Free: Newport 28, Albatros D5. Also you will be able to get two new planes at the day of release for additional payment - Spad XIII, Fokker DVII. Further we plan to let out 1-2 new planes in a month (preliminary) 3) We do our best to make game ready by 2008. Under specific circumstances it may be ready by first quarter 2009.

Mossie → 16.10.2008 8:19:09 #

Good to see progress is happening, discussions about grass seem a bit low, but for WWWI it was part of the take-off and landing dynamics. No grass leads to longer landing runs.
We are all interested in getting our hands on the game, it promises so much. I just hope that the communitity will be able to add planes, and objects to enhance the game overall.

Mike → 16.10.2008 9:31:59 #

Looking forward to this sim thanks for the pictures they look so real.

Bugs-In-Teeth → 16.10.2008 17:07:18 #

Loft, thank you for the info.  It is great to get information from a developer and feel like we are not left in the dark.  The game looks great and if you have any more info please send it our way!

Willi Von Klugerman → 16.10.2008 22:14:47 #

I never played First Eagles, but from what I saw in Youtube videos,it isn't that good. The vid with the player flying a Sop Tripe easily shot those Albatros' one-by-one.The enemy AI in FE acted like those ducks that you shoot with a BB gun in fairs. There was a cool thing I noticed in one ROF vid,the one with the Spad.As the player shot one of the DVII's,if you look closely. You can see the back part of the tail heavily damaged and fluttered as it got shot down.

Willi Von Klugerman → 16.10.2008 22:56:06 #

Hey WomanFly2,if they have a paint option for pink, you can be the "Pink Lady".Like the myth of the German female pilot who flew a pink Albatros.Though,it was just a myth, and it could have been Kurt Wolfs Albatros.

Lalah_6th → 17.10.2008 11:30:36 #

good job!!

Albatros_ace → 17.10.2008 19:55:19 #

Is there a list of aircraft that you hope to release?
If there is what about a price list?

And if your taking suggestions i would like the Siemen-Shuckert D.III or IV to be available eventually

When will the bomber/ two seater become multiplayer flyable?

Willi Von Klugerman → 18.10.2008 19:17:56 #

Why are the OFF fans critisizing ROF?

Willi Von Klugerman → 18.10.2008 21:33:52 #

What?!You can only fly for the US and Germany!?I hope we automaticly get Britain and France when you buy an add-on for British and French planes.Well, the flyable allied aircraft in this game are French, thus, the US side will be the only allied country featured. Not to be a know-it-all or anything, but, the Moon in one of the screenshots is a bit too big for the location it is at.The moon would be that size only when it is near the horizon, and it gets a bit smaller as it gradualy gets higher. But that dosn't matter. Here's my thoughts of the game.It is better than RB3D in some areas such as operational trains,3D looking clouds, exaust fumes, hammer moving as it fires, smooth rudder movment, and realistic damage. And better in geography terms such as 3D trees, forests, and woods, field patches, water, ect. Also, the houses look less like "clones" and aren't randomly placed, and KILLER looking cathedrals.

This game though, would never replace RB3D as it is a pure classic, and is a flight sim of its own.I would definetly get ROF and will be an intense sim to play (and more intense in multiplayer,Oh yeah!!)But RB3D just has a certain nostalgic feeling to it,maby it's the menu music, the image of a flak crew aiming at a DR1 with the sound of a starting rotary before you enter a mission, that little "click" everytime you click the menu buttons.

Now,my RB3D is "endlich kaput",my ten year old game finnaly refuses to install.I felt PO'ed when it happened.I'll never get to hear the menu music, the church bells gonging as you dogfight over a city, the sound of a dinging bell of an ambulance as it come torwards you when you crash near a drome.I hope that ROF has the same qualities as RB3D,and has a large selection of paint schemes and easily customizable one's (I realy want that blue and white diagonal stripes for my D7).

Its quite funny actually,I fell in love with this game after I saw the screen of the Metz cathedral in an Aerodrome thread.I thought it looked so cool and acurate, that I was soon obsessed with it.Well enough yammering for me!

FlyXwire → 19.10.2008 13:45:35 #

Willi, please realize that this game has not been released, so no consumer, except for a few in Russia who have had very limited exposure to the alpha build, have experienced Rise Of Flight yet.  To prematurely praise or criticize features that you have not personally experienced while flying this sim, ammounts to guesswork or banking on one's intuition.  Much of what has been said over the years about the KOTS/ROF project has been wishful thinking, both positive and negative.  I once pointed out in a forum discussion, that no gaming community "owns" WWI air combat, anymore than anyone can own WWI history itself.  Moving forward often involves building on things that worked well in the past, but with new ways of thinking, and while embracing new capabilities of doing so.  Give the designers here a chance to present their work as best they see fit, and then as the sim nears release, you'll have a clearer view of what the initial release of Rise Of Flight will entail.  Even then, it should be remembered, that the design team here has expressed their desires to continue in growing this sim in future years, and if successful, this game will getting bigger and bigger in content, following, and consumer support.  Certainly keep your enthusiasm Willi, but let the sim do its own talking, because there's lots for us fans yet to learn (and therefore actually experience firsthand).

Pongo → 19.10.2008 21:29:51 #

Sounds great, without being to negative though, I'm a little disappointed that no RFC planes are planned for the initial release or add-on.

Willi Von Klugerman → 19.10.2008 23:26:14 #

I would just love to see the commercials of the game being shown constently on TV here in the states! That would get people in the US to notice a WW1 game instead of the endless waves of WW2 games. If the commercial for this game is shown on TV once every 2 or 3 breaks in widely watched channels, then the game will get noticed.Anyway,Fight on,Fly on!!

Von Maxx → 23.10.2008 17:13:56 #

You managed to get everyone's attention! ROF looks great and promises to be fantastic. When do you expect the game to be released and are you planning a worldwide distribution. Will it be released in the US, hope so.

Bob → 30.10.2008 6:01:18 #

Looks nice, but I'll only buy a complete game, not one that comes in parts.

Economic Law - Sum of the parts is more than the Complete product.

Make the game complete with lots of aircraft, and charge for updates/patches - I've no problem with this... but trying to milk your client base is a no-no.
Smile

"...the Moon in one of the screenshots is a bit too big for the location it is at. The moon would be that size only when it is near the horizon, and it gets a bit smaller as it gradualy gets higher. But that dosn't matter"

Everything matters.

No the moon obviously cannot change its size depending on what part of the sky it lies in. The moon's apparent size can change but only subjectively, whereas cameras are not affected by optical illusions

It is only a glitch in your central nervous system that makes you see the moon appearing to change size depending on the position of other objects in the scene. It's a constant moon that shades the sun at times. Or some Biblical stories might have turned out different and even now we would be speaking Babylonian as they do in Scotland at the weekends

Hello,
@ the dev team of ROF.

The graphics, along with the flight models and most probably damage modeling is pure art. The landscape is nice, but the front with its trenches looks completely unreal, i hope the team will improve that (?)

However there are 2 major setbacks:

1. You have to be online even for single play ?!

It would be bad enough alone to "activate" this online like the M$ products - what do i do if the company gives up, problems with servers, or it stops supporting this product and whatnot ? Throw my ROF disk in the bin ??

But i read you have to be online EVERYTIME YOU WANT TO PLAY ?! Sorry, but not all what is possible today, is good - or should be done.

2. Only 1917-18 ?
And you call this "Rise of flight" ? With only two planes - well I guess there will be more after some time, but only as a pay-per-plane ? But even then, only US and Germany ?
So what will this first product cost, and how much will one add-on plane then cost ? I take it you will as well charge money sooner or later for online games ?

There were some hundreds of people who provided all kinds of information for "Knights of the sky", which then became "Rise of flight", which you used all for free. Next time i will think twice before helping a commercial company.

Sorry, but apart from the great beginning this trick is a definite show stopper. Maybe time to rethink your marketing "strategy" ?

Bad show,
Catfish
